Let’s be thankful that Goldy wasn’t extended for 3/60m or something like that, we’d all be up in arms!!!
Trade idea that is actually realistic in my opinion for the long term, this is forward looking for 2025, not necessarily best for 2024.
Cardinals get:
George Kirby – 5 years of control left (including this one)
Colt Emerson – Top 100 prospect, can play 3B, time line works with Arenado’s contractMariners get:
Jordan Walker – 6 years and plenty of 1 year OFer deals out there for 2025
John King – Serving no purpose for Cards
McGreevy – Hope he’s never a starter
Luken Baker – Can provide value, but no path in STLEnough or not close?
April 21, 2024 at 7:36 pm #249019gscottar, actually, it surprised me Shildt got the job before Stubby.
April 21, 2024 at 8:05 pm #249020The Mariners would want Hence as he is the only pitching prospect we have that is worth enough to headline the deal.
I am not sure what Walker’s value looks like right now. It’s not looking that great to me, the same with Gorman and we have literally nothing else.
The bottom line is they could probably get a better take for Kirby from someone else.
April 21, 2024 at 8:23 pm #249024Doubt the M’s are anxious to trade Kirby as they have a good chance to win in that division. And right now our problem is offense, not pitching. But starting pitching could become an issue in another year or two.
That is sobering as you wonder if we will have anything going good come 2025 and 2026.

ParticipantPretty sad to see poster already talking about 2025. News flash, some of us have more seasons in the rear view mirror than on the road ahead.
April 22, 2024 at 4:59 am #249039Kirby Deal – Cannot see the Mariners dealing Kirby at this point. I would have expected the Cardinals to have inquired about Kirby over the past offseason. A deal would have been made then if the Cards had what the Mariners were looking for.
April 22, 2024 at 5:30 am #249040The pitching pipeline looks bleak to me. The legacy guys, Liby and Graceffo have scuffled in AAA. The newer guys are slow movers who ran out of runway and were not going to make their team’s 40 man. Suddenly they are supposed to be hot items when they get here. Compared to what was here maybe. Further down there are a couple guys, but there always are. Further down. Lynn, Gibson, even Gray just kicks the can down the road where it will still be sitting next year and the year after that.
April 22, 2024 at 7:31 am #249045The first step in fixing the Cardinals is a new Manager.
April 22, 2024 at 8:00 am #249052I’m not a Marmol fan but he doesn’t have much to work with.
Whitey and TLR probably would not have been able to squeeze a winning record out of this roster thus far.
April 22, 2024 at 11:49 am #249083I learned in teaching, coaching, and parenting that your subordinates are always a reflection of you. I appreciate the philosophy of calm, steady leadership. Reprimands must be cannons not machine guns. On the other hand, a leader who watches a passion less team of grinders sitting back smuggly smiling suggesting the numbers say we’re the smartest guys on earth…that leader chooses inaction. Passionless inaction cannot be a chosen course when searching for extraordinary degrees of excellence. We laud the work ethic of this or that player; how about expressing that we are not mentally or physically sharp, and we are going to hold practices to take the pressure off. We are going to come together and work harder. If you have done all you can to prepare, there is no pressure because you have eliminated regret from possible outcomes. Belief in one’s self is only enhanced through accomplishment. That is where momentum is born.
April 22, 2024 at 12:35 pm #249086The first step in fixing the Cardinals is a new Manager.
This would be incorrect. It’s a step, but not the first step.
The first step would be firing the POBO. I start there because the owner isn’t going to fire himself, but that too would be a worthy first step. After firing the POBO and his entire front office, then fire the entire on field management system. That’s the start required to turn this around.
April 22, 2024 at 2:04 pm #249094I’m with TexasCard on that. They definitely need a new vision and need someone who is not a puppet, like Mo and Oli clearly are.
April 22, 2024 at 4:09 pm #249107It looks like the four players that are tanking this offense are Goldschmidt, Gorman, Walker, and whoever plays CF. Goldschmidt is a future HOFer. The probability of him staying mired in this catastrophic slump all season is next to nothing. Gorman and Walker both look clueless standing in the batters box, like they’ve lost their way. But trade one. or both, of those guys, and watch them take off. Edman and Carlson will improve the offense in centerfield when they return. In the meantime let’s see what Shani can do given consistent playing time. He’s never had that opportunity before. Scott is already a fan favorite. But he was also an automatic out at the plate. Oli should not have kept starting in CF for as long as he did.
April 23, 2024 at 7:08 am #249198They showed you last night what it takes. Pitching defense and timely hitting. Age old recipe. Players doing what they’re paid to do. They haven’t proven they’re capable of doing it for any length of time since 2022.

Let’s step back and think about that. Oli reports to Mo who reports to the owner. So if the two of them are puppets, the owner is the one controlling them and why would he want anything but puppets?
So many seem blind to the fact that these guys are in charge because the owner likes the job they are doing. So Mo gets booed at the ballpark while DeWitt gets cheers. I just don’t get it…

ParticipantI disagree that we don’t have any good pitchers in the pipeline. Sem Robberse at Memphis is 3-0 with a
1.59 ERA and 0.926 WHIP. Soon to be promoted Tink Hence is 2-0 at Springfield with a 1.17 ERA and 0.587 WHIP. Ian Bedell at Springfield is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 1.000 WHIP.
Roby, Rom, Kloffenstein, Graceffo and McGreevy all have mid to bottom of the rotation potential.
They’re still developing.April 23, 2024 at 8:47 am #249214bccran
ParticipantBrian – Bill DeWitt, Jr. and his father have a long standing, respected legacy in MLB. Mo has been with the Cards for 30 years, but in the last few years has made some serious tactical mistakes. You heard him say at WWU that they needed to look closely at how they assess talent at the minor league level. They also need to assess how they’re developing and working with talent at both the major and minor league levels. Mo has taken a beating over Gallen, Alcantara, Arozarena, Garcia, Hicks, O’Neill, Oviedo, etc. And rightly so. Maybe Gary L. needs to retire. And his replacement has just arrived.
April 23, 2024 at 9:05 am #249215Again, Bloom isn’t going to be the farm director. He is far beyond that. Yes, Mo has made mistakes but DeWitt is more hands on than most owners and is involved in every major decision. Few seem to have him share the accountability, as if Mo is off freelancing on his own. That isn’t how it works.
April 23, 2024 at 9:15 am #249217Brian I think that’s why the last 2 off-seasons MO says one thing than it doesn’t happen. He is vetoed by the owner. How the players that are here are handled is a different issue. How much involvement does upper management have in the day to day lineup and bullpen. It’s substantial imo.
April 23, 2024 at 10:39 am #249219Last night’s game illustrated that it’s going to take production from the two bats that tatered up to fix the Cardinals.
April 23, 2024 at 10:39 am #249220Speaking of fixing the Cardinals, has Yadi ever showed up? Or isn’t anybody interested in his two cents worth?
April 23, 2024 at 11:01 am #24922414NyquisT
ParticipantThe Card’s FO is at the point of being dysfunctional. Do we even have a GM?. Since the culture of the team comes from the top….. guess what? The players are disenchanted and walking around scratching their heads and trying to figure out what has happened to this franchise. Mozeliak has said that we have the team to get us to where we need to be.
How about getting out of the cellar… its wet its damp and we’ve been down there so long that mold is forming. Is the plan to have us finish fourth this season and maybe third in ’26.
The Cards are already as inconsequential as WAS, MIA and COL. Anyone whom is saying that a tear down is likely at the deadline is probably correct.
April 23, 2024 at 11:09 am #249227Speaking of fixing the Cardinals, has Yadi ever showed up? Or isn’t anybody interested in his two cents worth?
Good question. To be candid Yadi has never taken much initiative with the Cardinals since his retirement, at least not publicly. Some might argue that approach started in his final season on the field. Maybe he thought he would just roll into town and they would make him the manager. Didn’t happen.
April 23, 2024 at 11:12 am #249228Anyone whom is saying that a tear down is likely at the deadline is probably correct.
I will believe that when I see it. Last year they had a last place team yet they didn’t do a tear down at the deadline. They offloaded a few rentals but I wouldn’t call that a tear down. I would be surprised if they did more than that this year and maybe not even as much.

Yes, and for years the team has had a culture of “we just need to do enough to make the playoffs.”
At a minimum, they should be trying to win the division every year.

I believe they will try to offload every rental they have, including Goldschmidt. The problem is, only two of them are performing well enough to be traded right now – Lynn & Kittredge.
