I am a huge fan of Goldy for a lot of reasons but I have to admit he is in a really bad place right now. Could he dig himself out of it? He could but this is eerily starting to look like Carp’s drastic decline a few years ago.

Yeah, I never expected the steep decline we’ve seen in these first 21 games. However, he’s now had 75 chances at the plate and has displayed next to zero offensive production. His solitary HR for this season was hit on opening day at Dodger Stadium. It’s been beyond a scuffle for the former MVP.

If the Cards were willing to eat some salary, I think they could get something decent for Mikolas. Part of his problem is that he has had so many starts with no offensive support in the last few years.
He is one of those guys that might thrive in another organization. You only need one GM to think the same to get a deal

Mikolas is going to have to pitch a lot better than a 6.49 ERA to get any trade interest.

All of these people with high salaries – you have to wait until closer to the trade deadline and they have to start performing like they deserve to be on a contender.

I wonder why Johnny hasn’t called a presser for a state of Cardinal Nation address? Something like that may fix things.

Agreed LACardFan! I doubt anyone is knocking at the door asking for Mikolas. If there is someone, they will not be offering much in return at this point.

If Goldy = Carpenter and his decline to a bench player, then Mikolas = 2023 Wainwright. Throwing BP.

Somewhere along the line, Stubby Clapp should have been given the chance to manage the Cardinals. Even as an interim manager to get a feel for what he could do. Clapp did an amazing job managing at AAA.

Clapp may very well be next in line to manage the Cardinals.

Can’t blame Marmol for this roster, can’t blame Marmol for injuries (or can we, sort of?).

Maybe certain players that are blossoming elsewhere got moved because of the way Marmol and staff coached and used them?

When’s the last time the Cardinals traded for a player that came in and got noticably better?

I know it’s a reach but there could be something in this line of thinking…

Think about the outfielders we have lost
    Gracia
    Arozarena
    O’Neill
    Bader
    Palacios

And the miserable group we have left! That is the FO fault! People will try and explain it away, but they have screwed up this team!
Jordan Hicks finally has had someone tell him to stop trying to throw so hard and he is staring to look like a mid rotation starter! How many years did we have that kid? And all he did was try and throw 105! We have failed miserably in player development and player evaluation! That’s how you get where we are!

Palacios was the only thing good for the Cardinals in the second half of last year.

Then, they traded him for a reliever and Cardinals fans were rejoicing at how they traded a waiver-wire claim for a reliever.

This is why the Cardinals continue to keep circling the drain.

It is very one sided to cite Palacios’ stats without noting Kittredge has a

    1.29 ERA
    9 K to 2 BB in 7 innings
    1.00 WHIP
    346 ERA+

Sometimes trades can work for both teams. But then one couldn’t complain…

I can’t see how Marmol can be blamed for outfielders who were traded away before he was manager.

Steve, you forgot Lane Thomes. Last year for the Nats: 682 PA, .268 BA, 28 HR, 86 RBI.

Brian if your point is the Cardinals lost a guy who would be just the thing now because the jacked up system could not manage to produce a middle reliever in house, OK, I concede the point.

Yes, what a last place team with the fewest runs scored in the division by a wide margin needs is a reliever who has pitched 7 quality innings.

BB I didn’t include Thomas because he is the boy hitting 180 this year and I knew someone would point that out, but yes he makes a 6th outfielder who would be better than what we have! I’m not blaming Oli, I’m blaming Mo who has destroyed this once proud organization!

I did not like trading Palacios for a bullpen piece at all. You could see that Richie had something – athleticism and a live bat. But Kittredge has been good, and had Carlson not gone down the deal might not have been quite so troublesome.

Again, as GM I would have not made that deal. I would have done it for Burleson, but not for Palacios.

Mo did a good job for a long time. Made a mistake here and there and I think he tends to value non-baseball traits a little too much in making deals. But it seems the last few years most of his decisions have gone wrong, whether extending guys or making trades.

Hard to defend anybody who makes any sort of decisions for the Birds these days. The only thing they are getting right is the time twice a day. The org is broken and the nexus between front office/ownership to failure couldn’t be clearer. Anything they say is just noise and never seems to align well with what they do, which has mostly been ineffective. Their excuses aren’t even good.

The answer as to what it will take to fix the Cardinals has always been right in front of everyone. Drum roll, please……………New Owners!

After last season, there is no way Marmol should have been extended. Without an extension, he should have got until the All Star break to turn things around. If the same “shit show” as last season persisted, give Stubby Clapp a chance the rest of the season as the interim manager. Some things, just make too much sense for this Cardinals management to actually do. With Clapp’s fabulous resume’ as manager at AAA Memphis, he should have got the chance to manage the Cardinals a long time ago.

Shady, I agree with you about Stubby. I was surprised he didn’t get the job when Shildt was let go. Even if Marmol is ever fired it looks like Descalso is next man up since they tend to promote the bench coach.
