Edman is a very valuable player to the Cardinals because of his defensive acumen and flexibility and being an excellent base runner but if some other team insisted on him being part of the trade package that got us another front end starter or big bat I would not hesitate to do it. We could always sign a stopgap SS like Tim Anderson or Isiah Kiner-Falefa to serve as insurance for Winn.
In house?
BillyMo could start O’Neill / Carlson in CF and see if the position needs a deadline add, as a short term approach. Or, they tendered both just to flip them 🙂
Maybe they play them. We expect better than Winn production right? What if we can get Edman production from both SS and CF?
Why not trade Edman? All players are tradeable. Other than your obsession with him why wouldn’t the Cardinals trade him? He is good player but not close to being a superstar. You have to give something good to get something good back. I think they at the very least should do the due diligence to explore what they could get for him.
I did see this in a John Denton article the other day, and it is still up on the Cardinals official site.

Depth isn’t there. You’d have to get an equal value starting SS or CF in return, or somewhere else.
Winn and Scott could both be black holes with the bat, at mlb this season.
I value Edmans consistent availability as much as I do his D vesratility. Very dependable track record.

I, too, am against trading Edman.
I also believe any player is tradeable under the right circumstances.
But I would like any trade involving Edman to be a clear upgrade or fulfilling a crying need, not just somebody who can do the job but is less versatile or who might be better someday.
I am not sure what two years you are talking about.
In 2021, Carlson put up 3.1 bWAR. In 2022, he put up 2.0 bWAR. 2 is “average.”
This would not be a year to trade Edman. He should be the starting SS.
The Cardinals have an estimated $18 million left to spend.
In terms of freeing up cash, the Cardinals can save:
– An estimated $5.4 million by trading O’Neill
– $5.75 million by trading Giovanny Gallegos
– $12 million by trading Steve Matz
– $16 million by trading Miles Mikolas
– $18 million by trading Willson ContrerasAll those potential trades create holes that need to be filled.
Correct.
– Matz’ contract is affordable.
– Contreras – the team I see most interested would be the Yankees, who had terrible offensive production from their catcher position and had $100 million come off the books.

Lost in the Cardinals’ starting pitching woes last season was the struggles from the bullpen. Badly overexposed when starters regularly struggled to go deep into games, St. Louis’ relievers had MLB’s 23rd-ranked ERA (4.47) and blew 28 saves. Three of the five pitchers dealt before the Trade Deadline — Jordan Hicks, Chris Stratton and Génesis Cabrera — came from the bullpen, so those arms need to be restocked.
The first step is addressing the bullpen.

Was having Willson Contreras and not Yadier Molina behind the plat the primary factor? Or was it more that St. Louis’s defense plummeted from fourth-best to 20th-best in DRS, and from third to 18th in Def? (Nolan Arenado’s going from 19 DRS in 2022 to just one in 2023 stands out like a sore thumb).

I’ve read Matons’ name, from Goold maybe. If we continue with the “IP depth” theme, and apply it to the pen, Maton surely qualifies.

I think Hunter Harvey would be a good target from the Nationals.
As I mentioned in the Trade Ideas thread Cleveland has made Emmanuel Clase available. He is an elite closer with five years of control remaining. Cleveland needs OF’s.
A bullpen consideration is is what to do with the starters who are out of the STL rotation. If there is no room in the Memphis rotation, they may be in the STL pen.
