Agree, but his role will determine his PA’s.
As a PH’r, spot starter, i’d rather have his trade value now instead of next season when he’s arb eligible.JMart is only valuable to the Cardinals if they use him exclusively as a PH and emeregency outfielder.
But Seattle is trying to dump salary, and I still think the best trade for him is Alex Colome, who made over $5 million last year and will probably make more than $7 million this year.
If we have to throw in a mid-tier prospect to get the deal done, do it, because acquiring Jose Martinez only cost the Cardinals some money…
I mean, Seattle needs outfielders as well. Trade JMart + Adolis Garcia for Colome and clear a roster space for an inevitable LH reliever signing…
I think Paul DeJong needs to be the everyday 3B. Brandon Crawford who has several years of control could be added to play SS and shore up a shaky cardinal left side. Any thoughts on what it would take to get crawford.
If DeJong moves to third base, he just duplicates Gyorko. Here are their 2016-2018 numbers:
DeJong .263/.319/.482 for a 111 wRC+
Gyorko .259/.331/.463 for a 111 wRC+And here’s Brandon Crawford over those same 3 years: .261/.325/.409 and a paltry 94 wRC+
For the hot corner, if you can’t get a guy with true star potential (like Donaldson would have been) then I say just go with Jedd Gyorko. Even with his HR’s declining, he’s still been a slightly above average bat every single year with the Cards. He’s fine, boring, solid. As good as or better than Mike Moustakas at the plate, and in the field, and on the bases. Better on the bases, in fact.
If Jedd only plays 125-130 games, that’s hardly a scandal. Fowler has averaged 126 for his career, and Bryce Harper just 132. No one says they aren’t full-time players.
When a team’s going great, the fans naturally tend to overvalue their individual players. Average guys seem good, good guys look great. And so it’s predictable, inevitable that the opposite happens when a team is disappointing their fans — like the Cards have done lately. Everyone from Matt Carpenter to Carlos Martinez now has very vocal internet critics, if not enemies. Everyone in the organization is a liability somehow, everyone’s to blame for the 3-year playoff drought. We’re fans, and we’re stupid.
good points, but I really believe DeJong is a big upgrade over Gyorko on both sides of the ball. His numbers were possibly skewed by HBP injury last year, maybe not, but I thine we know what we have in Jed and Crawford is a much better SS than Paul. I just threw out Crawford as someone who might be available and as I see a upgrade at SS.
Maybe a reliever isn’t worth a thread, but I say we NEED Taylor Rogers, if he would be available.
1) As many noted he did not give up an extra base hit to left handed hitter in 2018. Hell Cecil, Schreve would likely give up one every game.
2) He is in the prime of his career, and each year he gets better.
3) Under team control for 4 more years.
He is worth paying extra for. It has been said that JMartinez for him may not get the Twins attention. Well how about Gant and Martinez for him and a lower level prospect. Or Poncedeleon and Jmart for Rogers and a better prospect. Even if Jmart is not part of the package before someone like the Dodgers or Yankees snap him up. DO THIS!!
As a practice here, we only start a new thread when there is a credible media rumor linking the player to the Cardinals. Otherwise, there would be literally dozens of random player threads started for favorite targets of every poster.

At first glance, this looks like a big win for the Mets, but I guess Seattle gets rid of a huge contract. It’s all about Diaz to me. Probably close to the best closer in baseball. And certainly a lot of team control.
To me this trade doesn’t make much sense for the Mets. They are not a contending team and non-contending teams usually don’t need a lockdown closer. What a waste.
To me this looks like a headline grab for a team that lives in the shadow of their big brother in the Bronx.
Yeah, you actually have to have a lead to utilize a closer.
But if Cespedes can actually play this year, they might be a fairly good team…
And it’s rumored Jay Bruce is going to Seattle as part of the deal. Maybe we can swap Bruce for Fowler after all (since DiPoto will make a trade just to make a trade).
Mets are adding a proven closer long term and a 136 wRC+ in Cano, while shedding Bruce. A Carpenter type bat (Cano) w/better D, imo, for at least 2 seasons.
I’d be surprised if they are still listening on Thor. Looks like they are buyers now, and probably not done.
They did give up two top 100 prospects, but i would have too, with DeGrom and Thor as SP1 and SP2.
The non tender deadline is today. Most likely the only player we have that could be non tendered is Shreve.
I’m also curious to see if the Cubs non tender Addison Russell. If they do it will be interesting to see how many teams show interest in him considering his off the field issues. I think he will be eligible to play on May 1.
The non-tender deadline is 8 pm ET tonight. Rick Hummel wrote earlier this week that he thinks Leone could be non-tendered, too. It is possible, but less likely, I think.
If Leone is let go, I suspect it would have to be injury related. Good K rate, solid BB rate…had some fluky numbers this year. I would take the gamble that he’ll be quite a bit better in 2019.
In addition to taking back the contracts of Bruce and Swarzak, it is reported the Mariners are going to be paying $60 million of Cano’s remaining contract.
Not exactly saving a lot of money.

I thought the M’s woudl look for more at catcher but OMar had a pretty good year
I think our hopes of a trade for bigger pieces from the M’s are about gone…Kelly or Knizner as a key piece seemed to me to be a really good chip
Maybe a Fowler Seager swap could still happen…where we take one more year of Seager (but at least he provides positive value to the team whereas Fowler really doesnt). Seager may strike out a bunch, but his defense is decent and still finds a way to hit about 20+ HRs a year and is a lefty, he isnt the MOTB bat we still need to find, but he woudl provide better return on money invested at starting 3b than Fowler’s money as 5th OFer
With ZUnino, PAxton, Colome, Diaz all gone…about all they have left to conisder would be Dee Gordon (who doesnt really fit our needs) Seager (only as money swap… and for me Mitch Haniger

Haniger may not seem like a superstar but he is cheap and ready to be a star in the right city…St Louis would love his 5 tools

What we lacked was a rock player…Haniger could be that guy..Oneill takes LF after this year, Gorman replaces Seager eventually
What do you guys see Carson Kelly’s value being? Knizner will pass him soon (if he hasn’t already) and if you move Kelly then you could likely find a quad AAAA type to provide depth.
Welcome, vannzee. Just my opinion… While I am not opposed to the idea of trading Kelly, I would not trade him for the sake of trading him. For me, it would have to be as part of a bigger deal to get a needed upgrade for the MLB roster.
Marc Topkin at least sees Jose Martinez as an option for Tampa Bay…
