I like Burly’s bat but I don’t like his OF defense and he is blocked at 1B by Contreras and blocked at DH by Herrera so I could see the Cards trading Burly, Gorman, and Walker for pitching.
I hope they keep Biscuits and let Herrera catch, Can convince Contreras to accept a trade at the deadline and then can move Biscuits to 1B and Herrera can go to DH mostly with some catching and maybe learning some 1B too. Open catcher to Crooks and have the organizational depth they have to trade from there to get what’s needed.
September 4, 2025 at 5:40 am #291858I hope that Bloom can get the roster set up so that guys play the defensive position they are suited for, rather than having to shoehorn bats into the lineup to the detriment of defense.
September 4, 2025 at 6:25 am #291860Now that Gorman is settling in daily at 3B, he sure looks a lot better there. Even if they have to eat a little money, he’s my pick for 3B on opening day.
The outfield definitely has a lot of sorting out to do, to be normal. Ex. Scott or Church? Noot or Donny or Herrera or Burly?

Herrera is not going to catch and I like his bat more than Burly’s. We already have way too many LH bats.
Can convince Contreras to accept a trade at the deadline and then can move Biscuits to 1B
That sounds easy but so far the Cards have had zero luck moving a guy with a NTC. Maybe Bloom canbe more persuasive.

Amen to that. We have a plethora of guys who are suited for DH only. That group needs to be thinned out in a big way.

I admit that Gorman is starting to earn some playing time but 3B is his only realistic position with this team since there is a logjam at 2B and DH. Convincing Arenado to waive the NTC and finding a team that will take him is obviously not easy.

Agreed. If we really want to focus on defense then we go with Noot, Scott, and Church with Walker still hanging around. Donnie and Burly could be traded for pitching.

stlcard25ParticipantThe good thing is that our deficiency (RH bats) is the easiest thing to find for cheap on the market. There should be no issue finding an upgrade to the lineup this winter, if Dewitt is willing to spend any money at all.
September 4, 2025 at 5:00 pm #291898That is true 25 but it will probably be a cheap RH bat. We already tried a Pham reunion which didn’t work so this time it could be Bader or Grichuk.
September 5, 2025 at 5:08 am #291909Everyone talks about “pitching and defense” on here, but remember you have to score a run to win.
September 5, 2025 at 9:36 am #291920
jj-cf-stlParticipantThat’s a fresh direction cards667, and the Dodgers trade proposal seems like a realistic trip back to the LA bank. The natural attrition of JoJo’s arb3 and Noots arb2, traded back for affordable talent, fits Bills declining budget. It’s a best case unloading Arenado.
At that point I agree with trading Donny/Noot who have 4 more seasons of control total, and keeping Burly/Gorman who have 3 seasons each. Right now I’ll take Burly as our best bat on the roster. He has stacked up three .800 ops months as an everyday batter.
September 5, 2025 at 10:01 am #291921
jj-cf-stlParticipant667: after the LA trade proposal that opens 3B to Gorman, an alternative to Herrera catching, is Ivan to LF with Noot gone. Herrera, Scott, Church OF; Walker not starting. Herrera/Burly LF/DH. Contreras/Burly 1B. I have Walkers roster spot as a 4th OF, if he earns it.
September 5, 2025 at 10:09 am #291922I hope that Bloom can get the roster set up so that guys play the defensive position they are suited for, rather than having to shoehorn bats into the lineup to the detriment of defense.

That is true but I envision the improvements coming in phases instead of all being sone at one time. I would focus on pitching and defense first then try to fix the offense later unless BDW is going to double the budget soon.
September 5, 2025 at 12:18 pm #291926The problem with keeping Burly is that he is blocked by Contreras’ NTC unless you want him in RF everyday or at DH instead of Herrera. I want neither of those.
I would also scrap the Herrera in LF experiment. He needs to start getting work at 1B. He could be the long term answer there once the Contreras contract expires.
I am with bling in that we need guys who can play a position they are trained for instead of pretending they can do it because we are desperate for offense.
September 5, 2025 at 12:46 pm #291931
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe NTC’s and Donny/Noot/ JoJo are short term.
If Herrera cant catch or play LF, I get yours and Blings point.September 5, 2025 at 1:05 pm #291933
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe roster 667 is proposing took into account service years and guaranteed contract seasons remaining. He skimmed the short terms w/2 seasons or less right out of here. CB may do the same, many teams do.

stlcard25ParticipantRighty OF who will or could be FA this year and their wRC+ against lefty pitchers:
Rob Refsynder 189
Austin Hays 181
Austin Slater 160
Ramon Laureano 159
Randal Grichuk 118
Lourdes Guerrero Jr 106
Tommy Pham 79
Harrison Bader 69
Lane Thomas 57Compare these to the guys we currently or could have in the OF against LHP…
Ivan Herrera 193
Nathan Church 183
Alec Burleson 101
Lars Nootbaar 75
Brendan Donovan 72
Jordan Walker 70
Victor Scott III 57Basically other than cameos by Herrera and Church, who aren’t too likely to play OF long term in St Louis, the rest are at best average and mostly well below average against lefty pitching. The FO badly needs to shore up the OF depth against those guys next year or we’ll continue to see a run of guys having career games (or maybe first career games) against the Cardinal lineup.
September 5, 2025 at 3:26 pm #291942The NTC’s and Donny/Noot/ JoJo are short term.
Kind of. At the earliest we won’t have all 3 NTC’s off the books until the 2028 season.
September 5, 2025 at 3:38 pm #291944stl25, that is very good information although it does not take into account OF defense. I like the bats of Herrera and Burly but their defense could be cringy.
September 5, 2025 at 5:31 pm #291950
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe trade proposal is my context. Arenado went to the LAD. Even Kings non-tender was considered. In depth service time considerations. Good work.
September 5, 2025 at 7:23 pm #291953Agreed. If we really want to focus on defense then we go with Noot, Scott, and Church with Walker still hanging around.
If you want defense, you don’t want walker. -3 OAA in 740.1 innings in the OF.
The problem with keeping Burly is that he is blocked by Contreras’ NTC unless you want him in RF everyday
Burleson is even worse than Walker in the OF. -3 OAA in 537.0 innings.
I would also scrap the Herrera in LF experiment.
He actually has more promise than either Walker or Burleson in the OF from a defensive perspective.
September 5, 2025 at 7:24 pm #291954The trade proposal is my context. Arenado went to the LAD.
jj – the Dodgers don’t want Arenado. They’ve clearly stated that.
September 6, 2025 at 7:20 am #291971
jj-cf-stlParticipantThat was yesterday, and yesterday is gone. There are plenty of tomorrows to consider LA.
September 6, 2025 at 7:55 am #291975Arenado has only gotten worse since the Dodgers said they don’t want him.
September 6, 2025 at 8:11 am #291977
jj-cf-stlParticipantType it as many times as you like 😀
