    Paid - Annual

Tonight for instance we face a lefty and our leadoff hitter has a split .235 BA, .302 OBP, which we all agree stinks in the leadoff slot. Yet in other instances Ollie seems very concerned with handedness matchups.

Hopefully, that’s also what Oli asked himself.

Didn’t see this earlier. I would put Contreras there. .434 OBP. A lot of negatives there, but poor roster construction is another topic. Besides, batting him second has negatives too, but we aren’t flush, so I am fine with that as well.

The way Winn uses RF, I have zero concern of him vs lefties. He doesn’t have a bad handedness side this season and vs a lefty, leadoff choices are limited without major shuffling of the deck chairs.

Reports are BAL takes on the entire remainder of Eflins salary and Tampa covers the 1mil trade assignment.

Is it teardown time yet? They went on a little run and it was exciting fir a bit. But they need to get turned over now.

I don’t think Mo is going to punt two years in a row and watch the Aug-Sep attendance crater.

If I’m Mo, I’m shopping some combo of Walker, Gorman, Nootbaar, Hererra and Carlson for young, top of the rotation starting pitchers with some level of contract control for at least two seasons beyond this one. Why shouldn’t he? Burleson’s, Siani’s and Pages’ progress has made this scenario possible.

Shady I would say Mo has to trade guys who are worth something to get guys who are worth something. Who is worth what is up to others besides us on this forum.

blingboy, there’s some trade value in the five I mentioned. All five need a buyer that sees it and feels they can develop them. Ideally, a buyer that has some high level picthing depth to part with.

They should have already made a trade for a bat in the OF….the lack of urgency in that area is concerning

I really wonder if Dewitt will take on xtra salary this year….there have been a few things this year that seem to show they aren’t willing to spend any more $

There is trade value in all eight you mentioned, to varying degrees.

    Per Denton on X

When Giovanny Gallegos was DFA’ed — a move the #STLCards decided Sat night — it was done in hopes of saving salary they can put toward a player nabbed via a trade, per a source. Gallegos was making $5.5 M in 2024. If he is claimed, STL plans to put that money toward a trade add.

In addition to pitching the Cardinals desperately need a RH bat in the OF. I can think of two ex-Cards who might fit the bill and would be cheap.

    Tommy Pham and Lane Thomas.

Yesterday I picked up that salary was a constraint the Cardinals were working around. Sounded as if they needed to remain salary neutral as they improve the roster. The deal to pick up Pham and Fedde worked as it fit into their budget after moving Edman, DFAing Gallegos and possibly getting cash as part of the deal.

Kinda wondering what that means moving into next season. How constrained will the Front Office be? How creative can they get to improve the roster while unloading unwanted salaries?

DFAing Gallegos was not about saving cash. The Cardinals will save $0 unless they can find someone willing to trade for him and to assume the rest of his salary this year.

Other clubs can just wait until he clears waivers and sign him for the pro-rated minimum.

As for next year, the Cardinals ownership has been using the same lines since the pandemic. They are seeking public funding for their ballpark renovations.

Team payroll will probably decline next year, because team profits declined this year (lower announced attendance, even fewer actually in the stands).

Your last point is really one to watch, LACF, as it can become a death spiral. Lower profits lead to less spending leads to poorer results lead to lower profit, etc.

They will draw attention away by pointing to 3 million attendance, which of course has nothing to do with revenue or profit. This is tricky to do at the same time they are holding out their hand for renovation money.

Economists say that something is ‘worth’ whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Translating that to baseball, Mo obviously got as much as he could for Carlson and Gallegos. Something may yet come for Gio, but it will be minimal. As it turns out, neither had any appreciable value.

Time will tell how the Edman trade works out, but it did target our needs.

Yes, the market sets the price.

However, if you look at the grand scheme of things – How are the Cardinals going to satisfy the 4th OF role next year with a RH bat?

Do we have a RH bat in Memphis that is ready to assume one of the OF roles?

    Presumably, Burleson will be 1B.

Donovan’s value is maximized by using him as a utility player that plays all over the field and backs up multiple positions. That lengthens the Cardinals bench.

So, really, you need a starting OF bat that is RH and you need a 4th OF that is RH so that we don’t run into the problems we ran into this year with lack of OF depth.

Yep, the bench will be fluid again this winter.

Assuming Crawford is here to back up SS better than Donovan, we still need that role filled next year , hopefully not by Crawford again. That is one place we will miss Edman. If he’d been healthy , we probably wouldn’t have acquired Crawford.

I wonder if Vlad Jr is someone Dewitt will want the FO to take a long hard look at this off-season. Dewitt sounds like he really wants attendance to go back up, and I think Vlad Jr is the player potentially on the market who would move the needle the most there. The team could certainly use a power RH bat, but we would have to believe he will continue to hit like this year. I also imagine the Cards would be hoping for an extension of making that deal.
