In a move quietly made on Sunday, the Cards placed Mikolas on the 60-day IL, according to MLB transactions. (Why it was not the 45-day, I do not know.)
However, the ramifications are one spot open on the 40-man and one spot open in the 60-man player pool.
My guess is that the Cardinals will wait as long as possible to announce the latest roster changes in hope that some of the first positives could be allowed back by the time they play in Chicago.

It’s one and the same. If you look at other players who have been placed on the “45-day” IL, the transactions read that that were placed on the 60-day list. If you read MLB’s different IL definitions, it doesn’t list a 45-day IL. It merely explains under the definition for the 60-day IL that it will be 45 days during the shortened season. It’s really close to being a moot point with the length of the season left to play.
Pages is a good choice. There’s some pretty good prospects that are standing in line to get a call up into that 60-man bubble at Springfield. I’m sure that those pitchers will welcome another pro catcher.
Agreed. In the Prospect Guide, I showed how Pages’ first year at State College favorably compared to Knizner’s first season a level lower at JC. We will see what the future holds, but there is definitely promise there…
Also, I had to wonder if the choice of another catcher was a downstream reaction to losing Yadi for a while. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.
Here is the biggest part of the Mikolas move. Derrick Goold is reporting Carlson’s promotion is at hand:

He noted that Thomas and Dean are out due to positive tests, but both are reserves. He did not talk about Williams being available and the fact that Ravelo could be part of the first group coming off the IL. They conceivably could be the two reserve outfield replacements.
Instead, with Carlson coming up, he also did not suggest which starting outfielder would be benched so Carlson can play every day.
The related moves should be interesting to watch. Especially if Yadi and DeJong cannot come back immediately, they may be willing to sacrifice some defense (Bader) for offensive upside (Carlson). Another option would be to put Carpenter back at third, with Edman to SS and put Carlson in as the DH.

Bader or Fowler are prime candidates to be displaced. I’d prefer to see Carlson in RF but we will see.

Another thought…with all the doubleheaders coming up, having usable depth may be more important than ever. No player will be able to sustain playing that many games in the field at any position. We will need 5 legit outfielders, most likely.
Possible, but my guess is that they rotate the top four outfielders through the DH position as a way to give them a breather.
Unless the fifth outfielder is Thomas (who is not yet eligible), I don’t see Dean, Williams, Ravelo, etc. being a part of a regular starting rotation.
Tough choice for Carlson. Does he tell the FO when they 14 days in a row of negative tests, I’ll join you? Could you blame him?

The first batch of positive COVID players, of which there were seven, could be available if they passed the necessary tests. So they may not need to add outsiders.
Update: I have tried to clarify this in my home page article tonight. The accurate answer to the original question is that the team has the CHOICE of whether or not to count COVID IL players against the 60-man pool and the 40-man roster. And as of yet, they have not clarified what they have done. We hope to get a new official roster by Saturday. And when we do, I will clarify. Sorry for any confusion…
Good news that the Cardinals will FINALLY play again Saturday. Next step will possibly be adding Carlson, and returning those who had Covid, but have met their negative test quota. I’ve always thought Carlson is possibly their best outfielder, and should play. I would have Carlson play center, instead of Bader, against a lot of right handed pitching, then alternate DH with Fowler and O’Neill, along with benching Carpenter against left handers.

Mark Saxon suggests the timing of Carlson’s arrival is tied to Super 2 status instead of Dean and Thomas getting sick. I don’t buy it for one obvious reason. By the time Carlson gets to two plus years of service, it will be a new CBA. Chances are the current system will be changed.

I guess it’s a smart move by the Cards, if that’s how they planned it. It’s also possible that it just worked out that way, with the team coming back from the COVID layoff. Hopefully fans are patient if Dylan isn’t a world beater right off the bat.
Saxon clearly demonstrated he doesn’t understand service time accrued. He must think it’s about a debut date only. There will be players who debuted one and two seasons ago, who will lose time to demotions, who will land in the 2022 Super2 service class also.
In the past ten years the Super2 cutoff date has varied from 2.122 to 2.140, 18 days difference, but this fool thinks he has the exact date nearly three years in advance. Just wow. Carlson could just as easily be a Super2 for 2022 as not be, no-one knows, and won’t know for nearly three years.

I guess Covid brings new rules to 40 and 60 man rosters. Apparently roster exemptions to those who are deemed to be out longer? Are these new rules perhaps related to the Cardinals and Marlins mass positive tests?

Yes. Not just the Cardinals, but all DH teams.

The “up and down” nature of it is why I predicted that Sanchez will be among those on the taxi squad, and therefore already traveling with the team. If he cannot pitch every second day, for the next DH, they will pick a different pitcher from the taxi squad to be no. 29 that day. At least that is how I would do it…
By managing the use of the taxi squad carefully, the team can avoid the standard 10-day maximum time for a player to have to stay down in the minors before being called back up.
