stlcard25ParticipantIt’s game day!! Unfortunately I have another commitment at 7 ET tonight so I’ll only be able to catch the first 4-5 innings and then have to watch the rest on DVR. Of course, I wouldn’t mind if the Cards were pummeling the Braves by the time I had to turn it off.
I’ll say the Cards win it 4-3 on a pinch hit homer.
October 3, 2019 at 8:20 am #109823Here are what I feel are some important keys to increase the chance to take game 1
Pitching: Micholas avoid the crooked number innings, bullpen gets outs.
Defense: play solid.
Offense: smart base running, take advantage of scoring opportunities, limit the K’s especially with RISP.
I’m calling this 5-2, Redbirds with homers from Edman and Ozuna.
October 3, 2019 at 9:35 am #109831DeRosa was just talking about how bad the Cards’ offense was this year — one of just four teams (Tiger, Marlins, Mariners the others) to not have a player with an OPS+ higher than 120.
Of course we know they’ve been bad offensively, but the players with potential to get hot and do damage are there. Time to rise to the occasion.
October 3, 2019 at 9:39 am #109832I have looked high and low for the 25 man rosters for this playoff series and can not find anything. I have seen rumors about Gant not making it (but he was throwing to Kolten Wong on Wednesday), and Arozarena and Ravelo making the playoff squad. Is the roster listed anywhere?

Cards roster is listed here. There are 40 players on it now. It will be updated to the 25 selected players soon.

Like with the Braves, keep an on on twitter. Cards might release it there first.

October 3, 2019 at 11:21 am #109869Can Brian McCann throw anyone Mother out anymore?
October 3, 2019 at 11:44 am #109873TOugh break for Gant after being so dominant for much of the year…
glad to see Randy get on…
Also, I am a little disappointed that Hudson is being considered for bullpen role in the series more than starting it seems
I know Waino is Waino at home, and Mikolas has trended up a bit but Hudson and Jack’s second half seem to be why we are even in this series..
Maybe he is the least bothered by that role per the vets of Waino and Mik, but he is one of the guys who can really pitch to ground balls which is where our strength in the infield comes into play

if Wong is back to being he wong that we had when he left I think that could be the biggest factor…when he went down so did the offense…
October 3, 2019 at 11:56 am #109875Carp sits, Bader plays…
#stlcards today, Game One Edition:
Fowler 9
Edman 5
Goldschmidt 3
Ozuna 7
Molina 2
DeJong 6
Wong 4
Bader 8
Mikolas 1— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) October 3, 2019
October 3, 2019 at 12:20 pm #109878I can’t remember. I know rosters can change with each series but do they extend?
October 3, 2019 at 1:10 pm #109884Rosters don’t extend — 25 is the number.
I think I remember this correctly, they can change within a series due to injury. If a player goes down with an injury tonight, the team could possibly replace him with another player for the next game (not sure what the criteria for injury are). That would make the injured player ineligible for the rest of the NLDS, plus the next series (NLCS in this case).

Good luck guys. I couldn’t get off work…gotta DVR

ParticipantAlthough presently I’d rather have Carpenter’s bat than Bader’s, its better not to have Ozuna and Fowler playing next to one another. Both appear to shy away from difficult plays, and when Ozuna actually does try for a difficult catch… well you know.
If the FO re-signs Ozuna for big $$$, BIG mistake. I’m ready for Carlson.
October 3, 2019 at 2:41 pm #109890I agree about Ozuna.
3 years/$30M – okay
3 years/$50M – NO WAY!He’s had two sub par years for us and cant play defense worth a hoot. And yes, I know he won a gold glove in 2017.

October 3, 2019 at 2:45 pm #109891Congrats to our Cardinals on winning the Central! Now I can get a 2019 Central Division Champs Shirt! Haven’t had a champs shirt in a long while. Now we get to enter the bonus round! It’s all gravy from here! Really proud of our team. As we all know at minimum a visiting team has to split the first 2 games to have any real chance to win the series. Actually the exspurts call this series almost even. You know what exspurts are. An “ex” is a has been and a “spurt” is a leaky faucet. I’m really liking our pitching and bull pen. On offense gonna have to be versatile. The long ball is always good but small ball works too. We’ve been in a challenging pennant chase and should be pretty focused. As long as we don’t get caught up in all the hype. Just play our game and the chips will fall out where they may. No wild card sudden death here. We earned our chance so lets see how we do! Go Cardinals!
October 3, 2019 at 2:51 pm #109893Quite a range of fan emotions about Ozuna during this season alone:
Early – Bench him! – did not prepare in the off-season, lackadaisical on defense
Mid – Sign him to an extension! – leading the team in RBI by a huge amount
Late – Hasn’t hit since returning from hand injury – let him walk!Spending big money when you don’t know which one (or more) of the three you will get for the next five years seems risky. I’ve seen estimates of 5/$80 MM or more in a market with weak OF competition. A big October will increase his price even more. Ozuna is just 28 years old.

ParticipantGive me Carlson and the draft pick and spend the $$ more prudently.

ParticipantDon’t forget to vote in round 10 of the prospects polling.
October 3, 2019 at 3:19 pm #109897Thank you Euro for answering my question?
October 3, 2019 at 3:30 pm #109898Agree with Jager on the pitching. I would prefer Hudson start game three with Waino the bullpen guy. But Dak did struggle with control in his last two starts, and his pitch count ratcheted up.
Braves fans have to be thinking that no matter what happens in games one and two, they have to beat Wainwright in game three. That deal has haunted them all these years, and just won’t go away. They thought they got back at the Cardinals stealing Shelby Miller away for Jason Heyward. But Shelby was sent packing after one season, and they did get Dansby Swanson in that deal so all was not lost.
October 3, 2019 at 3:45 pm #109900This one is going to turn out bad. I agree with Pugs and his 6-0 whitewash by the Braves.
October 3, 2019 at 3:50 pm #109901No idea of what the score will be.
ONeil will be traded this off season. Just too many Ks.
Ravelo needs to work on another position this off season and in ST. We need his bat but Goldy doesn’t sit much.
Wieters? Will he get bigger bucks than Cards will offer or will Cards even make an offer?
Somewhat surprised that Gant did not make the roster but his last outings were not the best. Still he may be on the NLCS roster if we go that far – he should be rested by then.
October 3, 2019 at 3:51 pm #109902Well Cardinals Nation, we are less than an hour away from our Redbirds receiving their first October pitch in 4 years. After May and June, it didn’t look to promising that another year would be without postseason play but through it all as a team we are hear and maybe it was the play of a handful of players with some clutch hits and pitching performances from those unexpected players but regardless of how we got here, we are here and it’s not about the name on the back but the birds on the bat in the front. Throughout the season we at times have been spectators, critics, 2nd guessers, managers, pitching coaches, hitting instructors, scouts, but through it all ups, and downs, one thing that always remained the is our loyal and devotion to our Redbirds so no matter the outcome of the 2019 playoffs, we will be with them until the final pitch and prove yet again why we are the best fans in baseball. Go Cardinals! Let’s go get #12
