Also, the Braves fans boo every single close pitch that doesn’t go their wayThis is correct. Plus some that aren’t close. One breaking pitch Keuchel threw with 2 strikes had to be 8 inches up and 6 inches in and the crowd gave a very spirited booing to the ump for not calling strike 3. All that conditioning from the Cox-Glavine-Maddux years doesn’t die off easily.
Great win tonight a# I was cheering from a local pub down here in Florida. Acuna admiring his right field hit was apropos for a team and certain players who think they are elite. Contrast that with, let’s say, Tommy Edman… advantage Cards for this series.
Holy smokes that was intense!! I had to leave when it was 1-1 and watched with the DVR and fast forward through the commercials and boring parts of the game. Still, what a heart stopper! Glad we got the win but Cmart made it super scary. 1-0, hope Jack can make it 2-0 tomorrow.

Not sure why that’s so hard for some players to understand, especially a guy who was benched for dogging it on a similar play in the regular season.

Am I hallucinating or did Shildt let Carlos Martinez bat for himself with the bases loaded?
Im not sure if it was bases loaded, think 2 was on but he felt having Martinez pitch was more important. he felt 4 runs was safe I guess. also we didn’t have too many regular relievers left to go to to close it out.
Right willie, two were on base. Yadi was on 3B and Wong was on 2B after hitting a double.
The pitchers who had not entered the game were Ponce, Cabrera, Hudson, Wainwright, and Flaherty. So yes, it made sense to let CMart bat, but I’m pretty sure Shildt got Hudson up and throwing the last couple batters of the game.

It sure was Euro Dandy! Didn’t get home until just after the conclusion, so I just finished watching the final 3 1/2 innings on tape. Maybe I’ll go back sometime this weekend and watch the first 5 1/2 frames. If I were to be attending a Halloween party later this month at Rat’s house, I know exactly who I would go as so to frighten the living daylights out of Rat…… Carlos Martinez, all decked out in his Cardinal uni. I would walk around all night with a glass of Wild Turkey in one hand and fondling a rosin bag in the other…..thank God I gave up smoking years ago, as I wouldn’t have enough hands…..the Wild Turkey would stay, so it would be between the rosin bag and the Marlboro Red as to which would occupy the other hand. I keep thinking about the bang bang play at 1st just before the Freeman 9th inning jack. I think if the Braves had tied this game and it had gone to extras, we would have fared as well as we did during Carlos’ last 9th inning meltdown during Game 1 of our 4 game sweep in Wrigley a couple of weeks ago.

I’d love to get the chance, gentlemen. Could you imagine attending a Halloween party at Rat’s place? You just know Rat would have his Whitey Herdog pooch in costume……he would probably have his groomer shave her rump so Rat could try to pass her off as Kojak. He’d have a sign hanging around her neck reading “WHO LOVES YOU BABY”. I guess the burning question would be “where would Rat have Kojak’s lollipop protruding from”?
I’m glad we won! Makes it sweeter that it was against Atlanta. They’d be in my top 5 teams I hate the most. Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox and Giants are in no order before them. I hate Atlanta!
I have a feeling tomorrow will be a tight one again but maybe lower scoring. Good things happen when our offense shows up. Might need a little bit of pitching Friday.

Seems as if the scorer did not agree in the long run – one error to DeJong for bouncing the ball to Wong. Even the TBS guys thought it was a hit.
That was an error. Edman should’ve had that. It was compounded by the fact that Wong made the exact same play later in the game and caught the ball. I wanna say in the 9th.
Until the ninth, all their runs were basically given to them. That bodes well for us going forward. It looked like a role-reversed 06 World Series out there until we blew it open in the top of the ninth.
Gutsy win by the birds last night but my goodness I so look forward to the day when Carlos Martinez is not our closer. There is not enough Rolaids or Mylanta in the world to compensate for the Carlos ninth inning experience.
I had to stay off the thread to watch the game on DVR. What a game though. It was a lot easier watching Carlos knowing that we already won the game

Bums me out though that talking point tended to be… “Cards hold on for win”…when the Cards were the ones that made the comeback throughout the game…
Sports media definitely is bias towards ATL it seems…and i get it, Acuna nd Albies are easy targets…Soroka too… all the yough of ATL is easy to get excited about and see as a promotional tool…
bias happens all the time it is just a bummer they can’t see the Cards as having just as fun storylines and players….Cardinals are boring i guess…
winning consistently even if unspectacular is just not very fun in today’s fast swinging pendulum world….

The good, the bad, and the ugly. We did win,after all.
The bad: Mikolas has the reputation as the best control starter. The first inning was the worst of his career according to the announcers, at least according to number of pitches. So, Miko walks the first two hitters before he settled down. Yes, Wong committed an error, which would have made no difference if there hadn’t been a runner on third due to two walks (first was thrown out stealing). The error that Wong made was partially due to inaction, partially due to the fact that it was a rushed play that required clean fielding to get anyone. It had bounced past Miko, was on the SS side of second (slightly) and so slowly hit that they would have been fortunate to get either the runner at second or first. Don’t walk leadoff hitters, especially in the playoffs.
Then, we hit into two third to first DPs that killed innings.
Miko does well. Then, his replacement hits a batter to lead off an inning. No hit by pitchers as leadoffs either. Then, we had a double and an intentional walk. Good way to start an inning. So, they get out of it with two runs off of an error? On a throw? They gave the hitter an infield hit. Got out of it with a couple of fly balls. Throw strikes to leadoff hitters, and we don’t allow a run.
Even in the ninth, it was once again a leadoff walk that started the problem. Walk, HR. Then, we get a 3-1 count and another HR. Throw strikes with a four-run lead. He did finish well, and there is nobody else. I’m a C Martinez fan. His stuff is hard to hit.
Bader showed why you really want him around. Yes, he hits the occasional HR. But, this winter, just teach him to get on first any way he can. SH, steals third. Is there anyone who steals third so easily as he? Scores on a grounder to second. Good baseball. Only Bader makes that work, maybe Wong. Bader is 12 of 15 (80%) on SB. Wong is 24 of 28 (85.7%).
After Goldy’s HR in the eighth, Ozuna and Molina went down. Two outs, nobody on. DeJong and Wong singled. Carp comeds in an singles to drive home the tying run. Wong doesn’t make it to take the lead. But, three good two-out hits got the tie.
Then, the ninth. Ozuna’s double with the bases loaded hit fair, went past third, hit foul. About half the time, they call that foul, based on whether it went past third fair or foul. Then, we had exactly the same situation at first base as Wong’s double hit fair, apparently crossed fair, and landed foul. I’ve seen that called foul on Wong all year. Both are bases-loaded doubles. We got the calls.
So many people did good things. Miko went five, despite the start. We had some close plays on defense that we made: Edman and Wong late. The worst of the night was Molina who did nothing on offense, but kept the staff together and threw out a runner. He did get an intentional walk ahead of Wong’s double. If it had been anyone other than Molina, might have scored from first with where that was hit.
Good start. I kind of like it that we have Flaherty , Wainwright, and Hudson coming up. The Braves have a problem.
If I never see CMartinez on the mound in a Cardinals uniform it will be too soon. He is far too erratic for my liking. The connection he has with Molina is a myth.

What makes you so sure about that (other than we know you don’t like Molina, either)? My feeling is that Martinez’ crashes would be much harder and more painful without Molina getting in his face. Who else is going to confront Martinez?
Man, watched the “condensed” game this morning on mlb.tv, and that game was really close. We got the benefit of several close calls, especially the Wong double and the out call before Freeman’s homer.
The double by Ozuna was clearly fair, but I am not so sure on the one hit by Kolten. That one could have gone either way. And man, from what I saw it looked like Goldy’s foot was just off the bag on the play at first in the ninth, but maybe he just barely got there.
Another close one was Fowler’s first-to-third where he clearly held on to the bag, but again, just barely.
Still we out hit the Bravos 14-9 I think, and also received 6 walks. A couple of early GIDP’s hurt, but keeping the pressure on did the trick. Great to have Wong back in there – he is a real key to this club’s success.
Just because we won doesn’t mean we should be thrilled about almost blowing a 4 run lead in the 9th inning. I am not going to apologize for being upset about that.
FWIW, the replay officials reviewed the Goldy play and did not see enough to reverse the out call. After looking at it from multiple directions, the TBS crew agreed.
That brings me to my point. Goldschmidt’s defense may be the most underappreciated part of that win. He saved about three potential errors with his steady play at first.
We all have been somewhat disappointed with Goldy’s bat this year but his defense has been spectacular. It has really transformed this team. I think I read where the 2019 Cards are the first team in history to go from worst to first in defensive errors in one year. Goldy, Wong, and Bader are the primary reasons why.
