Urias will need to come back soon unless he just gets released (seems unlikely). Torres and Jordan are the only options to be sent down. If it’s Jordan going down, Gorman is already playing 3B at AAA so I don’t know if that makes sense. He could play 1B I guess. Then whichever hits better gets called up in September?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Prieto gets released (or traded for a sack of baseballs) this offseason. No reason to keep him on the 40-man. Even with Urias likely gone, Prieto just doesn’t have a place. He’s a solid hitter who has improved defensively, but it just hasn’t panned out for him.

August 15, 2026 at 8:17 am #316173Sadly, Sports Illustrated isn’t what it used to be with real credentialed media. Now it is blogger content mostly. The difference is opinion pieces (which anyone can write from afar) vs. stories backed up with real reporting. In the day, SI had some of the best baseball writing out there.
From my perspective, Redbird Rants was in a similar territory. It just wasn’t a place I ever went. But when MLB.com hired Josh Jacobs, that was a positive change. However, my understanding is that Josh is writing remotely, so he is not with the team. Still, it is a nice feather in his cap.
August 15, 2026 at 9:04 am #316175Best of luck to Baez. The timing makes sense with the info Brian pointed out he can exhaust his rookie eligibility this year. It does make sense to try and evaluate him before the off-season as well to see if you think he can be the starting LF going forward.
I expect a low BA and a lot of Ks but maybe he can at least hit for enough HRs to still be valuable. I’m really curious to see how the defense plays.

ParticipantI think its ok move if they give him the playing time. Hard to evaluate anything if he doesnt get enough opportunities. Back in the day you might be able to slip someone up to catch pitchers a little offstride, nowadays esp given how highly touted he is, they have his strengths and weaknesses already memorized. Always fun to see a new guy. I dont watch the cubs games often but i might at least watch this on record anyway.

KeepComingBackParticipantWhat ATM said. I expect him to K a lot and have a low ba. But if he drops bombs and plays defense, he stays.
August 15, 2026 at 11:56 am #316188Despite 2026 being a bust Ramon Urias is actually a pretty good player, especially at that price point. I thought that was a good signing last winter. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out because of the tennis elbow. I can speak from experience that tennis elbow is no joke. I have had it twice. Urias ended up dealing with it both arms which must have been really tough.
I would like to see him get some PT at 3B in September, and this may sound counterintuitive for a team focusing on youth, but I would consider picking up his very cheap option for next year. He is a former gold glover with some pop in the bat. You would like to hope he will be injury free next year.

KeepComingBackParticipantA healthy Urias would have been a good fit.
August 15, 2026 at 5:24 pm #316264I’d like to see Rincon get a chance. Gastelum could be sent down.

cardsfan64ParticipantFrom the transaction page:
08/15/26 – RHP Jefferson Moran assigned to Palm Beach Cardinals from FCL Cardinals.August 16, 2026 at 11:18 am #316315I was catching up with some of the roster moves. A few were quite surprising to me. Any idea why Aita, Van Dyke, and Graham were put on the development list?
I didn’t expect them to cut Cameron Nickens. He did well at Palm Beach and struggled in Peoria, but it seemed like he could use some more time.
Lots of releases overall. I suppose they are struggling to allocate playing time and fring guys like Ugueto got squeezed out.
A name standing out box score wise was Mirabel in the DSL. Interesting he was signed a couple weeks back at 18 years old. I’m kind of curious how a guy like him goes under the radar for a couple of years and signs at 18. The way the DSL signings generally work is these guys have been scouted heavily since little league age.
August 16, 2026 at 11:40 am #316316Any idea why Aita, Van Dyke, and Graham were put on the development list?
I saw that Aita gave up 11 runs in 4 innings last time out.
August 16, 2026 at 12:05 pm #316319That was just one outing. His overall season has been good not great. It seems like they are so crunched for playing time though they are making aggressive moves to free up some playing time.
August 17, 2026 at 10:29 am #316398Graham pitched yesterday. I also wonder if Cijntje is out for any period of time that Doyle may get a up of coffee at Memphis.
August 17, 2026 at 11:07 am #316400Do you have information that Cijntje is injured badly enough to miss any starts?
Keep in mind that the use of the development list the rest of the season could be to provide a short-term breather rather than an indication of a performance problem that needs to be addressed (ala Baez, Hence and others).
August 17, 2026 at 12:48 pm #316404Brian, it’s just speculation on my part. Watching Cijntje limp off the field, it appeared to be a leg injury. The Cards don’t divulge much injury info. I hope he is okay, as that was the best and most dominant start.
August 17, 2026 at 3:35 pm #316416You may have missed this in our game recap from Cijntje’s last start. I should have confirmation by this time tomorrow (Tuesday) when Memphis discloses the rotation for the week. Then again, they might use this as a reason for him to skip a turn. He is the only pitcher in the entire system to have thrown over 100 innings (though Mathews is also there if you include his StL time).
Jurrangelo Cijntje is not hurt. He will be fine. No worries. https://t.co/Ck6dg1NMRD

August 17, 2026 at 5:38 pm #316423Good news, thanks Brian.
August 18, 2026 at 8:49 am #316467It seems Alan Reyes should be promoted to Peoria. He has a career 2.14 era. We need all the good relievers we can get.
August 18, 2026 at 9:09 am #316475Reyes is 22 so he should get moving, but he has been active just one month this season coming off injury and has thrown less than 10 innings.

cardsfan64ParticipantBrian, how can Palm Beach have more than 30 players on their active list? Is that just a paper shuffle they do on game day without making the transaction page? Just curious.
By the way, I think you missed Jefferson Moran moving up.RHP Jefferson Moran has been transferred from the FCL to Palm Beach (A).
RHP Ryan Rodríguez & 1B Christian Sáez (DSL) have been given their unconditional release.

August 20, 2026 at 11:21 am #316637Thanks, I did miss Moran. His inclusion makes it even worse.
Per my count, Palm Beach has 32 active players, excluding Honeyman who is on rebab. MiLB.com has them with 33 because they haven’t yet logged Holiday’s promotion to Peoria. Both of us have eight inactives on top of the 32/33. (Being off isn’t easy to spot unless you count every player because MiLB doesn’t list totals.)
Just like me, MiLB doesn’t catch everything happening. At the higher levels, when I have a discrepancy, I refer to the rosters provided by each team when changes to their players occur. PB doesn’t do that and the rookie teams are far less formal.
Many times when a roster appears to be over the limit by one, it is a timing thing that is cleared up in a day or two. But with PB right now, it seems there are some IL moves or demotions to the FCL that haven’t been reflected.
I will look into it.
August 20, 2026 at 12:01 pm #316641I have confirmed that there are a couple of earlier Palm Beach IL moves that were missed by MiLB.com. I can’t announce them first, but look for them to appear soon.
