I have thought about Contreras, but I don’t think so. First, we would lose our second pick and 500k international money. Second, it would be a long enough contract that we are basically giving up on Herrera and the potential for years of a potentially productive cost controlled catcher.

An out there scenario is we sign Judge to replace O’Neill. Eventually Walker takes over the other corner and Noot either pushes Carlson off CF or becomes a 4th OF.

As to the starting middle IF, I say Edman at SS and Gorman/Donovan platoon at 2B, with Gorman getting an outsized share of the reps.

One thing that seems like a clear course for the Cards is that the division title is the goal, with anything else being an unnecessary, yet pleasant surprise. Milwaukee is trending down, the Reds and Pirates are years away and who knows what’s up with Chicago. The team could stand perfectly pat and win the Central easily. With the new schedule, the winner could be 85 games, but second place may be 78 wins.

Seems like there are going to be 3 spots to really talk about this off season – a catcher, a power outfielder to hit behind Goldy and Arenado, and a 5th starter.

First, maybe should talk about that 5th starter. The Cards will first look internally. Maybe we should too. The top 4 are set barring injury –

    Mikolas
    Montgomery
    Flaherty
    Matz

Will they extend Quintana? Will they re-sign Waino? No one knows.

But they may look deeply at an internal guy to be that #4/5 –

    Hudson
    Liberatore
    Thompson
    Pallante
    Woodford
    Parsons

Unless they get rid of O’Neill, which I think is unlikely, they aren’t going to sign a power-hitting outfielder to bat fourth or fifth who would block Jordan Walker.

Maybe they’d change their mind about trading Carlson, but then they’d need a center fielder.

O’Neill has proven to be a health risk. Signing a mid 30s left handed power bat to a short term contract plugs the hole just in case O’Neill continues with his injuries or is still fairly unproductive. It also provides Walker with a veteran outfield mentor when he’s finally called up. It wouldn’t block Walker.

I like Gorman quite a bit, but I’d like Murphy from Oakland a lot more since we have Edman and Donovan in the middle infield with Winn on the way. As the team is built right now, Gorman will basically take at bats from Nootbaar and Burleson as they shift Donovan around to accommodate him as well.

Someone said it above! This team is being built to win the weakest division in baseball! Nothing more! Until we, the fans demand more we are stuck with division winners that have no shot in the playoffs proven by our 1 and 9 record in the last 10! We need a way better team to contend for titles! When you look at the last 8 teams standing they almost all have advantages in starting pitching, bullpen and lineup and for us to get there is gonna take either more money being spent or some of our potential players to actually produce!

BB, Omar Narvaez seems like a Mo acquisition.

At first glance, Vazquez seems like a better FA CA option, but I’d be fine with either if they can’t get a better option ina trade or with Contreras.

I don’t think any of the FA options would negate Herrera. If they trade for a young guy, then Herrera becomes obsolete.

Contreras doesn’t play CA that much so it would be like a D’Arnauld situation in Atlanta with him.

The other options in FA wouldn’t be here long enough either.

Steve60, how do fans gain any attention by “demanding more” when 3.3 million of them come to the park every year? TV ratings are best in MLB. I get the sentiment, but what would cause change isn’t happening.

My list of acquisitions probably differs a lot from the Cardinal list.

My list would include Contreras, Pederson, and Verlander or Bieber.

The Cardinal list probably is a number 5 starter similar to Matz, a veteran bullpen piece similar to VerHagen, and an OF bat similar to Dickerson.

We win our 89 games, win the NLC, draw our 3M+ fans, and get bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Rinse and repeat.

I like the assessment that CARD4ever put together. Thanks for taking the time to put the summary together.

I’d be surprised if they put out a lot of long term money for a FA catcher. Knizner was a very good hitter coming through the minors. He has been shuffled back and forth, right and left, up and down, and hasn’t been given a full blown opportunity over a season. They may very well go with him and get an experienced backup that they can sign for 1-2 years.

I say hang Gorman out there and see what bites. Perhaps it will bring in a decent hitter for the outfield and somebody else can worry about fixing the lad’s problems. There’s always the risk he’ll turn out to be a star, but just as big a risk that he won’t. We’ve got the infield pretty well covered so I think it’s worth it.

Vasquez is due for a multi-year contract, and I’m expecting Mo to sign a Dickerson type one year contract at catcher.

I’d prefer Sean Murphy from Oakland but Blings question was, who do you expect Mo to sign?

The Cardinals know they need to sign up a catcher. A Romine type to back up Knizner.

This past season, if Gorman was on the active roster, Donovan was the DH.

Yepez traded this winter wouldn’t surprise me.

Brian Walton, if you are right and deep in my heart I know you are we are stuck with a division winner who has no real hope in the playoffs! As I get older I am feeling less and less like this is enough!

The Cards have some interesting trade chips if Mo wants to go in that direction.

    Burleson
    Yepez
    Gomez
    Thompson
    Hudson

    To name a few.

When we will be 100% guaranteed that Arenado is NOT going to opt out? Has he made it official yet?

Of your internal list, Woodford is the best bet!

He won’t opt out for a multitude of reasons. But he may use his opt out clause to sweeten the pot a little.

Rat, I believe its 5 days after the World Series, but I might be wrong? I could see an extra year or two added on.

I’m sure there could be a useful return for Gorman, but without any lefty power in our entire system, I don’t see him being the one that would be traded.

Plus, I think the outfielder to bolster the lineup is probably Walker. I’m hopeful that we can turn our lineup surplus into some pitching.
