I would view Wainwright in a slightly different lens. Yes he has technically been a free agent signing the last couple of years but he has been in the organization since 2004. He is a known quantity. It is a bit more difficult when you are bringing in a free agent from the outside. You have to do more homework.

Me either, baseball wise. I’m simply pointing out that almost every multi year free agent deal is going to include some bad years. It doesn’t make them bad deals. The Cards most assuredly got what they expected from Peralta.

I don’t either. That is my point. Bringing him back has been good for the Cardinals but that has been an easier task than bringing in a free agent from the outside.
Wainwright was fine until September. Still very low 3.09 era until then. September was another story with the ‘dead arm’. I think he will be fine next year, as long as the give him a spot start off. Hell, if nothing else, he could go out like he came in, as a reliever. Max Scherzer had a dead arm the end of the year before and was great this year. I know he is younger, but still old.
If three guys, maybe Mikolas, Montgomery and somebody else could hold down the top three slots, expected to go beyond 6 IP, then Waino could settle in down in the rotation where the expectation is more like 5 to 6, then hand it off, and he could pace himself accordingly. I bet he could turn in 30 good starts giving us a chance nearly every time. But if he’s pushed by circumstances to be a guy who saves a worn out pen or stops the losing streak, then he’s going to have a dead arm even earlier.

for this group: Jack,Matz,Hicks,Waino.–(just because of age.)Lee, I agree that looks like it. It also looks similar to going into the last two years. One difference from last year is that this year we are counting on Monty, who is proven to be reliable and effective in a MLB rotation, rather than counting on a .500 AAA guy who skipped AA due to the pandemic year. On the other side, Waino is a year older, Jack has another rough year on his resume and Miles and Matz have the injury history lurking.
Appears as if Verlander is meeting with the Dodgers. Wonder what kind of deal he might get out there? I wouldn’t go any more than two years with him.
And this thread has made it to 36 pages. Even if it doesn’t go any further I think that’s a record for me.

Verlander is probably looking to get a deal like Scherzer got. Something like 3 years/ $120 million. That sounds wild for someone who turns 40 in February but he did just win the Cy Young. That seems like the kind of signing the Dodgers would do. They like the short term high AAV deals for pitchers.
Conclusion: A catcher and another Dickerson.

Bingo. I’m actually pretty content with the lineup right now and would like to see a significant upgrade of the rotation. I’m sure it’s not going to happen, though. Of course Mo can make a couple minor moves, wipe his hands and say “payroll increased” out the side of his mouth thanks to the fuzzy public accounting.
I read the Rosenthal twitter post and went through some of the comments. Funny as he!!. Nearly everyone of them were classic negative (every year the same) remarks. Also calling out Mozeliak and DeWitt for merely bringing in mediocre and the cheapest players. Something tells me that those two will figure out a way to surprise all of us with a holiday present (#1/#2 SP) wrapped up neatly and a bowtie on the top.
Catcher priority one, we knew that. Mo talked up Edman = no SS coming. He talked up our outfield and Walker, sounds like stand pat.
Maybe he will acquire an impact arm. He needs 3 or 4 but one is a start.
Mo said Edman is a very good shortstop and didn’t mention DeJong. It doesn’t sound like DeJong is going to be getting every chance to rebound.
Mo keeps saying what a great shortstop Edman is so he can justify not doing anything to improve the team.
That Mo…he sure stays one step ahead of me Nate. I was fooled into thinking we might get better, but now you have laid out this analysis. To think Tommy is just a ruse, and Mo is using him. It’s almost too much for me to process right now. Man Nate you do present a strong argument, but it’s all coming at me so fast.

Why acquire Volpe when you have Winn?
On your more general theme, pretty much every team’s fans more highly value their own prospects – because they know them the best by far.
We like ours and they like theirs. So maybe third party sources have a use. I decided to see how Gomez and Bernal look amongst Cardinal players on BaseballTradeValues.com.
Gomez is just ahead of Heredia and just behind Espinoza. Bernal is just ahead of Rajcic and just behind Willis and Hansen.
In the ‘Memo to Mo’ department, I notice they have Woodford just ahead of both Flaherty and McGreevy.
