blingboy, let’s hope Gorman and Walker develop the current consistent production of Donovan, Winn and Burleson.

RBK, gut feeling. Like I had with Burleson when it seemed around 90% of posters weren’t sure about him not that long ago. Burleson has made some past doubters now marvel at what he’s doing. Sometimes, you have to look beyond so-called current “facts” as the be all, end all.

    LOL. Exactly. Reply #261210

It’s like the universal signal for when you’re (once again) at a dead end.

RBK, so how’d you feel about Burleson the two previous seasons? Were you one of the prevailing doubters? Are were you one of the very few that, not only recognized his immense potential. But, also, wasn’t afraid to post how good he was going to be. When it wasn’t too cool to go there. It was rarefied territory.

For now, maybe Pham should stay in the lineup even against RHP.
    1) Winn SS
    2) Burleson DH
    3) Contreras C
    4) Arenado 3B
    5) Goldschmidt 1B
    6) Donovan 2B
    7) Pham LF
    8) Nootbaar RF
    9) Siani CF

I might replace Burleson with Pham against lefties.

    Pham vs lefties .928 OPS
    Burly vs lefties .522 OPS

Pham kills lefties. Burly is MIA against lefties.

I’d like to see Burleson pick it up against lefties. But Oli sure seems to like Burly hitting high in the order vs LHP despite the stats. I suggested Burleson batting 6th, for now, vs a lefty starter.

Oli had a decided lack of options. Until now. Pham clearly the far, far superior hitter vs left-handed pitching. I know it, Oli knows it. Pham & Burly know it.

    vs. LHP:
    Burleson: 45 wRC+
    Gorman: 75 wRC+

Why don’t you hold Burleson to the same standards vs. LHP as you hold Gorman?

Whatever you think Oli “sure seems to like,” the stats chronicle the actual production. It’s strange, you regularly second-guess and criticize Marmol’s lineup choices on here, yet when it comes to Burleson, you’re suddenly completely credulous and compliant.

RBK, gripe at Marmol, he makes out the lineup, not me. There’s a pretty good chance Marmol prefers Burleson’s competitive ABs to Gorman’s. Hint hint, all the Gorman Ks. And Marmol likely prefers having the leading RBI producer on the team in the lineup. Try not to stress out too much about harmless baseball talk. This isn’t CT.

RBK, “when it comes to Burleson, you’re suddenly completely credulous and compliant”. I recently suggested Burleson bat 6th in the lineup against LHP. Please try to pay closer attention before trying to insult.

Doesn’t appear RBK is stressing out.

He’s simply using data which clearly illustrates just how helpless Burleson is against left-handed pitching.

Of course, baseball fans could possibly argue that Burleson will never be considered a complete hitter until he figures out how to hit lefties.

I must confess…I appreciate RBK’sinformation…I had no idea how utterly clueless Burleson was against lefties until I saw the data RBK provided.

AdM, so why doesn’t Marmol appear to pay attention to the stats stuff you and RBK utter criticizing Burleson? Hint, hint, Burleson’s RBI production may give you a clue.

Yes, with his 45 wRC+ vs. LHP, those have been some really “competitive ABs” . . . In the same way a nail is competitive with a hammer.

    Once again, vs LHP:
    Burleson: 45 wRC+
    Gorman: 75 wRC+

So I’ll ask again, since you didn’t answer: Why don’t you hold Burleson to the same standards vs. LHP as you hold Gorman?

And why are you telling me to gripe at Marmol when you’re the one who’s on here frequently criticizing and second-guessing his lineups. But of course, when it comes to Burleson being in the lineup, suddenly you turn completely credulous and compliant, totally uninterested in applying any critical analysis of the stats and evidence to the lineup choice. Strange.

RBK, you seem to like to dwell on stats. Here are some stats for you. Gorman has stuck out 140 times in 332 ABs. Burleson has only K ed 49 times in 366 ABs. Please analyze the difference and let me know if you feel this might enter into Marmol’s preference to have Burleson in the lineup.

    Vs. LHP (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA/wRC+)
    Siani: .194/.247/.264/.511/.230/47
    Burleson: .196/.224/.294/.518/.227/45

I have to say…against a tough lefty with the game on the line, Burleson is the LAST hitter I’d want up for the Cardinals.

The question has to be…will he EVER become a complete hitter or will he simply be a guy who can only hit right-handers?

    Time will tell…

RBK and AdM, maybe I’m old fashion. But I really like the combo of high RBI production and low K rate. Don’t you? Deny if you choose, but the Cardinals would be hurting, big-time, right now, in the division if Burleson wouldn’t have produced like he has.

I really like guys who aren’t automatic outs vs lefties.

That high production you speak of…it’s non-existent vs left-handed pitching.

AdM, like I said, Burleson is leading the team in RBIs. Do you dismiss that fact? As a Cardinals’ fan, do you not appreciate that? The Cardinals have seen a bunch of lefties. He is getting RBIs off some other than just RHP.

He has 11 RBI vs lefties in over 100 ABs.
He’s helpless against lefties. All the data clearly illustrates this. It’s a fact. Undeniable & indisputable.

Oh…and Gorman has 14 RBI vs lefties in fewer than 100 ABs. Sorry. Another fact.

As usual, you’re not posting in good faith. I’ve shown you the numbers vs LHP. Those are FACTS. Yet you stubbornly refuse to acknowledge them–let alone actually address them–and instead just try to change the subject.

As to your prior question, which repeats for the umpteenth time your arbitrary and irrational fixation on strikeouts to the exclusion of everything else: I prefer to look at more comprehensive measures of productivity, rather than focusing on one component statistic that only tells part of the story. For example:

    Vs. LHP (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA/wRC+)
    Siani: .194/.247/.264/.511/.230/47
    Burleson: .196/.224/.294/.518/.227/45

    One is a fleet, GG-caliber, defense-first CF. The other is . . . not.

Now let’s return to the Gorman comparison:

    Vs. LHP (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA/wRC+)
    Gorman: .196/.257/.361/.618/.271/75
    Burleson: .196/.224/.294/.518/.227/45

To be clear, Gorman has been pretty bad vs. LHP this year, but he still has a 33 pt higher OBP and 67 pt higher SLG than Burleson. Said differently, he’s made fewer outs (of all types, not just Ks), hit for more power, and created more runs per PA. He’s been roughly 20% more productive than Burleson in the split this year. So I ask again (for the third time): why don’t you hold Burleson to the same standards as you’ve held Gorman?

Gorman here in his 3rd season will pass Tony Gwinn (20 seasons) in career strike outs.

BTW, Siani is now outhitting Gorman by 51 BA points.

I think we will see how Oily feels now that we have a right handed option. They are the same player afaic. Only 1 bats left 1 bats right. 1 rakes against lefies the other against righties. Both are poor defensive players. I think we will see them platooned.

I think we will see Pham replacing Gorman rather than Burleson vs lefties like in Wednesday’s lineup.
