Do Not trade Donovan!

ParticipantWell we didnt get a lot. A pitcher with some possible upside for the bullpen but def seems like a project. But we offloaded arenado so i guess worth it. In the end the arenado trade was a bad deal though i liked watching him play third. Outside of one really good year, we didnt get much other than defense.
January 13, 2026 at 1:27 pm #299095It was a positive trade for the Cardinals.
January 13, 2026 at 1:33 pm #299096We got nothing in return for a guy that’s still capable of being an All Star for the next couple of years.
Are we sure Mozeliak isn’t the one still doing the wheeling and dealing???
January 13, 2026 at 1:42 pm #299097The happiest guy in the entire St. Louis Cardinals organization today is Nolan Gorman. I hope they give him everyday at bats at 3B, at least for the first half to see if he can get it figured out with some consistency and without looking over his shoulder.
January 13, 2026 at 1:53 pm #299098This could mean only one thing. gsottar has a contact on the inside.
January 13, 2026 at 2:15 pm #299099If NA was capable of being an all star we would have gotten more. We got what he was worth
January 13, 2026 at 2:27 pm #299100The biggest conclusion to be drawn from the Goldschmidt-Arenado-Gray-Contreras years is no playoff success. Because the internal core was too weak, the outsiders were not enough to matter.
January 13, 2026 at 2:29 pm #299102Anybody want to wager here?
I’m betting that Arenado puts up the following or better:
.260
25 HR
80 RBIJanuary 13, 2026 at 2:34 pm #299103Yeah, this trade was essentially to clear space for the young guys to audition. My guess is Gorman will get first shot, with perhaps Saggese, Donovan (if he is still here) and Wetherholt as potentially ending up with the job should Gorman not grab it and run.
Arenado ends his Cardinal career at 18.1 bWAR. Not enough to warrant eventual Cardinal Hall of Fame honors. He lands behind Ken Boyer, Matt Carpenter, Scott Rolen, Whitey Kurowski, Joe Torre and Pepper Martin among Cardinal third sackers, with some of those guys having played other positions as well.
For his career at 57.8 bWAR he is almost exactly tied with Dick Allen (58.8), who recently was elected. A halfway decent year and he will pass the former slugger. Allen too played other positions, being primarily a third baseman only his first four seasons.
The top two non-Hall of Fame third sackers in bWAR are Gregg Nettles at 68 and our own Ken Boyer at 62.8. I doubt Nolan can garner enough WAR to earn Hall election, however if by chance he puts up say 3-4 WAR this year and ends up in the World Series, and has a nice playoff run that might be enough to eventually get him there. But both Nettles and Boyer should be in before him, depending on how things go for Arenado in the desert.
January 13, 2026 at 2:35 pm #299104forget it. I’ not about to take that bet. He might even win another GG.
January 13, 2026 at 2:36 pm #299105I find it interesting that Arizona won only two more games than the Cardinals in 2025 and also finished in fourth place in their division. They have one playoff appearance in the last 8 years and last won their division in 2011. At least it is warmer there.

Arenado is being valued as a really bad player. Basically getting little to no salary relief and a complete flier prospect. $11M over two years, with no return, means he’s expected to net about 1 total WAR in two years. Hopefully for Nolan’s sake the mountain air will push a few of his fly balls over the fence and he’ll have a productive end of his career.$9M in relief in 2026 and like $3M in 2027?
It’s not terrible salary relief-wise.
Have to remember that he has a no-trade clause too.
January 13, 2026 at 3:21 pm #299107What about a .666 OPS screams All-Star type player?
January 13, 2026 at 3:25 pm #299108He’s gone, who cares what he does. Wish him well.

According to what I’ve read, they are paying him down to $5 million this year and $6 million next year. So while it’s not nothing, it’s not a huge lowering of salary. They won’t do anything with that money anyway.

Ha! No, I don’t know anyone. Every once in awhile I get one right.
January 13, 2026 at 3:33 pm #299111And all of a sudden the highest paid Cardinal on the 40 man roster is Dustin May at $12M.
January 13, 2026 at 3:34 pm #299112He was a good cardinal.
The one thing I remember about him was the 2021 season when he went in front on the cameras and said ” we have to quit blowing games like this”.
Love the guy. He wanted to be here.

January 13, 2026 at 3:41 pm #299115Three more things to do
1. TRADE DONOVAN!!!!
2. Trade Gorman
3. Trade WalkerJanuary 13, 2026 at 3:45 pm #299116
stlcard25ParticipantCurrent Cardinals payroll is barely over $100M. If Romero and Donovan are traded, that payroll will drop to about $92M. Opening day payroll in 2005 was $92M.
The Cards are paying over $36M next year for three former All Stars to play elsewhere. Real payroll for the guys on the team today is $64.7M. Welcome to the cellar, fellas.
January 13, 2026 at 3:54 pm #299117Well, It’s another ‘it needed to happen’ deal – and it did BUT wow it’s a pretty painful deal.
If a whole bunch of young guys / marginal MLers don’t find another gear 2026 will be a 90 loss season.
I mean, so be it – We will find out who can play and who can’t and go from there.
We’ve pretty much stunk for 3 years now anyway – Sure, we’re already tired of losing but it is what it is.
I do not want to see Walker in StL polluting RF but I have a feeling that is exactly what’s going to happen.
January 13, 2026 at 3:55 pm #299118The Pirates are getting very close to passing us in payroll. I never thought I would see that day. Their 40 man payroll is currently $97M.
January 13, 2026 at 3:57 pm #299119“Real payroll for the guys on the team today is $64.7M.”
Holy Cow that’s really low.
I’ve always heard you get what you pay for.
