other questions is how much input has MM had in creating this roster also? that is a valid question because if he was good with the FA moves and stuff like that then that is on him also.

Mike has no input at all into FA signings or trades.

In the words of Kenny Rogers:Play the hand you’re dealt:

Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep
Cause every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser

Onyx – I’m sorry, but that’s a fact. Mo and Girsch make all the decisions on FAs and Trades. Mike would like to have input, but he’s not in the loop on that.

If the only meaningful responsibilities of a manager are overseeing drills and practice, handling the bullpen, and making out the lineup card, then Matheny is fine and there’s no reason to replace him.
But, I think that a manager’s primary responsibility is to bring out the best in his players. In fact, the whole reason for competition is for a player to bring out the best in himself, his teammates, and even the opposing players. A manager should be pushing his players to do that. He should be insisting that they drive themselves to get better. Matheny is too worried about ‘protecting his players’ rather than pushing them to excel. That’s why we have bad baserunning, poor defense, unpredictable offense because of players underperforming, and emphasis on rest, rest, and more rest rather than on hard work. When Molina was complaining about playing time last year, it was generally construed by the local media, and so, the fans, that he was being selfish. I think what Molina was trying to say is ‘I don’t want rest. I don’t want to be protected by my manager. Treat me like the battle-hardened veteran that I am rather than as one of Matheny’s little helpers.’ Matheny is not getting results for his players and in games. I think its been pretty well established that he is not going to change.

What do you do when a player who is underperforming refuses to take extra batting practice?
What do you do when a player swings for the fences when told to just make contact?
What to you do when a highly paid player just loafs after the ball?
What do you do when a highly paid player loafs down the 1st base line?
What do you do when you ask a player to do a little extra and he says it’s not in his contract?

All you can do is sit them, and put in peripheral or young players who may or may not do better. There are only so many options you have as a manager with the players you’ve been given.

Billy Martin has to be as frenzied as a hornet up in that big diamond in the sky, with the way players of today are treated. But times do change.

Again bccran why have a manager then? Players will do what they want the manager has not control so do away with them.

I wonder what TLR did in those situations?

bccran you probably have some inside info as you refer to Matheny as “Mike”. If he doesn’t have input at all into FA signings or trades he should resign and fine a job with any of the other 29 teams where he would.

He might, but he’s a Cardinal thru and thru. He just hopes that they can trade for another Ozuna or two to give him a reliable middle of the order. With all of the fine young pitching, they’re not that far away from being a true contender. That being said, there are several players on this team that are holding the whole team back for various reasons. They go against everything MM is trying to teach and accomplish and need to be gone.

Ok I will bite. Who are those players and what is Matheny trying to teach them?

The promlems are now spending a significant amount of time on the bench. They need to be packaged in a trade.

Onyx – you obviously don’t know St. Louis. It’s a small town within a big city.

If all of those things are true about Fowler, he is no more than a common criminal who is stealing from his employer and stealing from the Cardinals fan base. Is that ‘contagious smile’ of his hiding a low life with no sense of responsibility, no principles, no character?

Matheny appears to get too close to the players and is overly sensitive to feelings when quick decisions are needed. Give Oquendo an opportunity and replace Mabry with Edmonds or Lankford. All Mabry appears to do is collect data, there seems to be no guidance for batters badly needing assist. Keep Jose Martinez off the field and only use as a pinch-batter.

The coaches are also selected by Mo. Several are not a good fit for MM.

MM is indeed on the hot seat now. If the Cards miss the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row a change in field leadership will be the only logical answer. An uprising by the fan base and general public relations and marketing principles will dictate it.

So several coaches are not a good fit for Matheny? Remove the one and keep the several. There problem solved. Matheny can get a job with one of the other 29 teams most of them include the managers in most of their decisions. Then make anybody the manager since the front office runs the team.

The front office doesn’t run the team on the field or in the dugout. They don’t always travel with the team. They just staff the 40 man, staff the 25 man, and make all the decisions on coaches, FAs, and trades.

But poor Matheny is saddled with coaches and players that are not a good fit for him. How could he or any manager run a team under those conditions? They should get a manager that fits with the coaches and will not mind not having a voice or vote on the roster obviously Matheny wants more.

MM would definitely like to have more say so in the makeup of the 25 man. Do you think he would have signed Fowler to that contract and have to move Carp to #3 without a true middle of the order bat? Question for everyone. Who flew out West to take Fowler and his wife out to dinner to “ask” him to move to RF? Anyone find that scenario awfully strange?
