ParticipantIMO the QO is too much to pay for for one year. Truthfully, I cringe at the thought of another season of Ozuna… and a lost draft selection to boot. To the FO: please kind sirs… no mas. At some point we have to move on.

stlcard25ParticipantThe question I have is one Brian sort of addressed…if the Cards sign Ozuna, do they forfeit the same draft pick as everyone else, being their 2nd draft pick…or do they “lose a pick” by not getting the extra pick they’d get from him signing elsewhere? In the former case, it would be like losing two draft picks, then.
January 9, 2020 at 12:01 pm #118725It is the latter. They don’t really lose a pick. They just don’t get the extra pick.
If the Cardinals sign Ozuna they are draft pick neutral.
If another team signs Ozuna they are minus 1 in draft picks, unless they make up for it by having one of their own free agents sign elsewhere.January 9, 2020 at 12:17 pm #118727PadsFS
ParticipantI don’t think they will get a valuable pick at this point any way. Doesn’t he have to sign a deal for over $50M for the Cardinals to get a pick?

No, that only applies to teams that receive revenue sharing, which the Cardinals do not.
January 9, 2020 at 1:15 pm #118740Rats, you could at least check the stats before making these kinds of statements.
In 2018, Carpenter had career peaks in home runs, slugging, OPS and OPS+. He had his second-best RBI year and finished in the top 10 of the National League MVP voting, also his second-best placement ever.
OPS is likely Greek to you, but many agree it is the best measure for overall results by an offensive player. The last three years Carpenter’s average his been in the .240s, .250s, and .220s. It used to be in the .270s or higher. And yes, I know I am in the minority because nobody thinks batting average means anything anymore.
He had one hot streak in 2018 for about 6-8 weeks where he hit a lot of dingers. But that was it. Having said this, if we could get another season close to what he did in 2018 it would be fine with me.

Let’s get specific. The Ozuna comp pick will be just before round 3. We don’t know the exact number yet, but last year, it was pick no. 78 overall, carrying about $800,000 of additional cap room.
Taken by the Cardinals after no. 78 in their drafts in the last five years alone (so others may still be in the pipeline):
Zac Gallen (traded)
Tommy Edman
Andrew Knizner
Harrison Bader
Jordan Hicks
Paul DeJong
Ryan HelsleyOf course, there were misses, too…

If Ozuna is coming back, there can be no doubt that one of the OF or more are going to be trade bait.
I am hoping it is ONeil.
January 9, 2020 at 8:24 pm #118859“Step right up…”
Free agent OF Marcell Ozuna tells @hgomez27: ‘St. Louis is on the hunt. We will see which one of the two will be (Cardinals/Rangers). I’ve been in St. Louis and I like the city. My first option will be St. Louis. If they step up I will stay, if not I will find a new home."

January 9, 2020 at 8:37 pm #118863Is the Passan news that the Cardinals are shopping Fowler a precursor to Ozuna’s return? Feels like it from a payroll fit perspective.
January 9, 2020 at 8:45 pm #118865Did I read that correctly? That Ozuna expects the Cards to step up if they want him? Seems odd that a guy who hit .241 should be calling the shots here. Sounds like he should be keeping his fingers crossed that somebody wants him.
And yes, yes, of course, I know once again I am talking about that worthless statistic known as batting average.

January 9, 2020 at 8:57 pm #118869You could be right Brian. I think most of us would gladly choose Ozuna over Fowler but my preference would be to have neither.
They should trade Fowler and let Ozuna go to Texas. Take the extra draft pick.

Yes, I hope so. The Cardinals need two MOTO bats to be successful. And, I am guessing the Cardinals want at least one veteran outfielder.
Not sure about the payroll fit, as I assume the Cardinals will have to eat $6+ million per year to trade Fowler. But a modest increase won’t hurt them.

Participantwell personally I would rather they not sign ozuna, his antics in the outfield just blow my mind. but if we could lose fowler and his salary, doubtful, but if maybe it would be worth it. I just don’t know. personally I think hes one of those guys teams should ignore for a few months, then maybe by july, he might start figuring out he isn’t really all that.
January 9, 2020 at 9:40 pm #118876Cardinals willing to eat money
The Cardinals likely aren’t done on the outfield side of things, either. They could conceivably bring back free agent Marcell Ozuna, and have been willing to eat money to move Dexter Fowler’s contract, per league sources.

You seem to be assuming a one-for-one trade. But the Cards could include a prospect or international signing cap room, for example, to pay down some of Fowler’s contract instead of just with money.
But we agree on the main point. Getting most of the way should be good enough. There is no stated hard cap.
January 9, 2020 at 10:00 pm #118879Along that line of thiking, maybe they will package Yairo Munoz with Fowler to Arizona and get a decent prospect back…
January 10, 2020 at 9:09 am #118919Rats, I hesitate to engage given your stubbornness about batting average. However, I will try again. A friend of mine is a baseball card expert and writer in his retirement years. Don Drooker posted a column just today which bridges traditional baseball card stats and old-time players with some of the most basic modern stats. Perhaps if you could open your mind just a bit, you could discover there is more to learn, without selling out your basic beliefs.

I certainly wouldn’t mind that. No idea if the Dbacks need a utility guy but Fowler wouldn’t be bad for their OF. How much money would they need to eat there? $6M a year like the Leake deal?
January 10, 2020 at 11:00 am #118944I’m not advocating signing Ozuna or Castellanos, and I’m likely thinking way to far into this, but assuming Ozuna and Castellanos are going to get roughly the same years and dollars….. wouldn’t it make sense to sign Castellanos and get the draft pick when Ozuna signs?
Neither of the two have a glove that is impressive at this point and I would definitely give the nod to Ozuna in that area of the game, but Castellanos seems more dependable over a season with the bat.
January 10, 2020 at 11:04 am #118945wouldn’t it make sense to sign Castellanos and get the draft pick when Ozuna signs?
Of course that makes sense but the Cardinals usually prefer players they “know better.”
January 10, 2020 at 11:46 am #118962The assumption is that the two have equal expectations for years and money and could be signed with the same ease, then afterward their production would be comparable. A lot of assumptions. Don’t know the answers…
January 10, 2020 at 11:47 am #118963Rival exec makes interesting point: Would be smart for #STLCards to sign Castellanos without losing draft pick, then gain pick once Ozuna goes elsewhere. Castellanos was ineligible for qualifying offer because he was traded during season. STL gave Ozuna QO, tying him to pick.

ParticipantIt’s my opinion that much of the newer analytics were created by fantasy players to be used for fantasy players and gamblers. I do find some useful in rating players. The thing is that in assessing players there are so many numbers that can be used to skew arguments in many directions.
