I am in the camp of passing on Soto and staying with the direction the club has pursued. Focus on pitching depth, and keep the pipeline of top tier prospects flowing.
The only way you go big on Soto is getting a deal done where he is here for longer than 2 1/2 years. And he is not going to do that. That places a lot of risk into a deal where you are jettisoning several high tier prospects.
You win with good pitching and good defense. The offense will be there with Goldy, Arenado, Carlson, Gorman, Edman, O’Neill, Walker, and Winn.
You have more faith in those guys than I do. Goldy can’t beat father time forever, Arenado should remain solid for another couple years, Carlson has only ever been average, Gorman and O’Neill will always be inconsistent, Edman is NOT a good offensive player, no matter how much people keep saying it (he’s below average save for his hot rookie year), and the other two are prospects. I think the future is decent…but the Cards absolutely need to spend some money to round the team out.
You think our team is good? Half of it on the injured list for another month? We can win 2 of 3 from nationals… we can maybe take a couple from the cubs but unless we playing sub 500 teams the rest of the way we may survive to play a playoff game.
10:45am: The Padres and Nationals are in agreement on a deal that sends Soto and first baseman Josh Bell to San Diego, Morosi reports.
Game, set, match. Never expected a different outcome.
I wish the organization would make their multi-million dollar commitments based on fan feedback, but that isn’t real.
If Soto goes elsewhere, some angry fans will threaten to boycott the team, but its seem to have no effect, just like when the Cards passed on recent “generational” players Harper and Machado.
I know in my case, I temper every comment with the reality of what the Cardinals will do with what they probably will not. There is absolutely no reason to expect them to start spending like the Dodgers or Yankees.
I may not like it, but I know I have to accept it. It doesn’t mean I let them off the hook. I am just being realistic.
Brian, I know where you’re going with this and I’m in the same boat as you. That said, they *do* make decisions based in some part on fan sentiment. If fans start staying home, they will notice and recognize the need to take action. When the general concensus is that the team is doing enough to get butts in the seats as much as the ownership can tolerate, then why would they feel the need to make any sort of change?
I don’t expect the team to spend like NY or LA…we both know that the Cards operate nothing like those two behemoths. Yet, spending on talent that could push you from “playoff contender” to “pennant contender” from time to time would be nice. At least IMO.
Soon the Dodgers will sweep in, at the last minute, with a better offer and take home Soto. Much like they did last year with Scherzer and Turner.
San Diego will send back rookie shortstop C.J. Abrams, top outfield prospect Robert Hassell III, right-hander Jarlin Susana and top outfield prospect James Wood, according to Morosi.
For context, Abrams was their #1 prospect going into the year (#6 overall going into 2021). Gore was ranked #55 going into last year, as high as #3 in 2020. Hassell is their current #1 (#21 overall), Wood is their #3 (#88 overall). Susana was just signed this year and was the #31 prospect in the international pool, according to MLB.com

The Padres gave up a lot. Their #1 & 3 & 14 prospect plus MLB players CJ Abrams & MacKenzie Gore. I am glad we didn’t do that.
The Padres certainly look like a contender this year. Machado, Soto and Tatis back to back is scary. I’m not sure how the rest of their lineup shakes out, however.
On the plus side, they have a lot of money committed to this year now. Perhaps they’d be willing to part with a spare starter to a needy plebe like the Cards? Gotta sneak into those playoffs somehow…
I’ll laugh if Hosmer vetoes the trade. That said, that makes things much more suspect. Getting Bell and offloading Hosmer is a pretty big deal…that is probably one of the prospects in and of itself. So the “real” cost for Soto alone is…what? Doesn’t seem like so much, now.
How much $$$ will it take the Pads to buy this out?
CORRECTION: The Nationals are on Eric Hosmer's 10-team no-trade list. He would have to give his consent to be in a deal with Washington.

Yes! I view this as a positive! I think the Cardinals were wise to dodge this bullet. We can still improve the team without trashing the farm system.
The painful side of tearing down and rebuilding…
As an aside, I’ve seen references to at least three of these having been called “generational players”. I think that term is overused.
