Participant2019 wasn’t a fluke either.
2018 –
.326/.397/.475/.972
Back to back great minor league seasons,
Forsch.February 6, 2021 at 8:23 pm #153664bc, Justin Williams also had a good 2019 at AAA. He started off slow at AA after coming back from breaking his hand but rebounded well at AAA. He is even younger than O’Neill. Should he be in the conversation, as well?
February 6, 2021 at 8:36 pm #153665bc, whenever we discuss Carlson, you reference that you will defer to the people in the know that rank him in the top 50 prospects. Dean has never been in the top 100 prospect lists at the beginning of the season as a pro.
Despite the last few seasons, Dean is only a little better in career minor league batting average and is roughly 90 points lower in OPS than O’Neill. O’Neill has twice the number of minor league home runs and over 50 more RBI than Dean, in almost 600 less ABs.
BTW, your 2018 slash line for Dean is off. It should be .326/.397/.475/.871

stlcard25ParticipantDean is that type of player who occasionally works out better than you hope (like Like Voit), but is generally exactly what you expect (an AAAA player). I’m sure he will compete in spring training and find a role either as the last guy in St Louis or at Memphis as a call up. Older players who have good numbers after several years at the AAA level aren’t too exciting.

ParticipantLike Ludwick and Jose Martinez, 25?
February 6, 2021 at 9:07 pm #153671
stlcard25ParticipantSure, those are a couple of other examples. They are generally few and far between. The Cards have done well in identifying some over the years. Still, the guys who make the majors at a younger age tend to do better. For the same reason that a 25 year old playing college football at a high level wouldn’t be that exciting, good AAA stats at 25-26-27 rarely signal an exciting future big league player.
February 6, 2021 at 9:19 pm #153672bccran
ParticipantWell, the Cards must have seen something in Dean. They went out and got him, and reports out of Springfield said they were impressed with him.
February 6, 2021 at 9:19 pm #15367325, I agree that Dean could turn out to be something like Voit. Right now, he has to wait until O’Neill, Bader or Carlson fail unless he rakes, like those AAA slash lines, while O’Neill or Bader struggle a little.
February 6, 2021 at 9:24 pm #153674bc, they got an OF who was designated for assignment by the Marlins for a minor league outfielder who has very long chance to make the majors.

ParticipantI’m sure there are a number of Dean type players that are available every year. But the Cards brought in Dean. That says something. And, again, they liked his performance in the summer camp. That says something too.
February 6, 2021 at 9:38 pm #153676They liked Schrock, as well.
February 6, 2021 at 9:52 pm #153677bccran
ParticipantBut they were short of infielders. They had an excess of outfielders.
February 6, 2021 at 10:20 pm #153678Despite being short of INFs, they let Schrock go even though they liked him.
Dean will only get a chance if one of the 3 or 4 ahead of him don’t perform as expected. Even then it may only be a short chance until the trade deadline.
February 7, 2021 at 6:22 am #153681I’d like to see the Dean in Springfield quotes, beacause I missed them the first time. Then again, it doesn’t really matter. When the only news from camp is what the Cardinals self-report, it is all positive.
From Mike Shildt: Reports were “super-positive on all the guys.”
What a wonderful world where no one struggles…
February 7, 2021 at 6:27 am #153682“Despite being short of INFs, they let Schrock go even though they liked him”.
I really wished the Cardinals had protected Max Schrock.
February 7, 2021 at 6:28 am #153683Schrock will be available on the waiver wire for anyone to try to claim.

ParticipantWord also came out of Springfield that Liberatore and Thompson were very impressive. That Liberatore wasn’t that far from being major league ready. Darn. Guess it was just happy talk. Very disappointing to know that now.
February 7, 2021 at 7:58 am #153697bccran, Liberatore could be bouncing it to the plate for all we know, and reports would be “very impressive”.

jj-cf-stlParticipantOn the Fowler topic, Mo has really opened up the playing time to further evaluate his young outfielders, AT MLB. To see the brass sign off on eating this amount of salary is not only eye opening, but reinforces the approach to not let any more Arozarenas’ fall through the cracks.
During 2019, batting 7, 8 and 9th accumulated 1906 PA’s over a 162 game season.
By the new deadline of Aug 31st, 1588 PA’s, roughly 400 PA’s each, for FOUR outfielders.
By July 31st four outfielders could accumulate 320 PA’s each. After 350-ish PA’s for four outfielders EACH, by mid July, decisions going forward should be much clearer.
February 7, 2021 at 8:24 am #153700bccran
ParticipantHope that’s not too late, jj. We now have a situation that of all 5 outfielders, not one has had 600 plate appearances in a season. Or even 500.
February 7, 2021 at 8:29 am #153701jj how secure are those PAs though? The team pretty much has to be competitive and probably more than that given the frenzy. If the team stumbles out of the gate and doesn’t get on a winning track rather quickly the current agenda could go out the window. A hole will allowed to get only so deep. Dean showing up would be the first chunk of sky falling.
February 7, 2021 at 9:13 am #153702bccran
ParticipantIn 2020 –
Our left fielder hit .173
Our center fielder hit .226
Our right fielder hit .200A big turnaround is needed. Sincerely hope it happens.
February 7, 2021 at 9:22 am #153703
jj-cf-stlParticipant“not too late”
“stumbles out of the gate”Those are team scenarios. How do you view our infield? Our team D? Our outfield D? Our pitching staff? Our NLC competition? I’m not in the camp that our season hinges on our outfields offensive production.
February 7, 2021 at 9:38 am #153706bccran
ParticipantEverything else on the team is in place, jj, assuming DeJong and Edman have better seasons. But most (I believe) would agree, that the outfield has to improve if we have chance at all of winning another World Championship.
February 7, 2021 at 10:00 am #153707bccran
Participantjj – another consideration is that DeJong, Edman, and Molina all had an OPS in the 600s last season. That’s 60% of your infield and catcher. It magnifies the outfield issue. It would be a real problem to have 2 Snow Whites and the 6 dwarfs offensively.
