I remember Pham as an OKish fielder who hit pretty good and when he got ready to make some money they offed him for Cabrera. Turned out to be a pretty good decision as he never really took off and just kind of flopped around.

Skip Schumaker’s future is going to be very interesting to keep an eye on.

I thought Skip made a mistake taking the Miami job, but after last year it looked like a good career move. Now with a decimated starting rotation it is not so good. I think he will handle the misery with class though. I can’t see Skip saying stupid stuff like “these losses will really help us in September.”

No matter what happens in 2024, Skip is an NL Manager of the Year. Unless he does something stupid between now and the fall to damage his reputation, he’ll do just fine next year.

By the way, has anyone seen Yadi lately? 😉

The gist of the article on Skip is that he is going to be a highly sought after free agent at the end of the year ala Craig Counsell. The Marmol extenstion could loom large.

To Tyler O’Neill’s credit this was not his typical pulled muscle injury. It was a violent collision that may have led to a concussion. I would hate to have been his teammate that he collided with.

True, gscottar, but some guys seem to be injury magnets.

Needless to say it is the outfielder coming in who is responsible for calling off the infielder going out. They don’t emphasize fundamentals anymore.

I used to sympathize with whoever was manned up at SS and backing up on a pop fly into shallow LF when Matt Holliday was bulldozing full throttle towards the IF from LF. I imagine it was like standing in the middle of the tracks of a RR crossing while the red lights were flashing…

Flaherty has struck out 36 and walked only 4 this year? That can’t be true can it?

Saw this on the MLB transaction page:

05/07/24 – Cincinnati Reds selected the contract of CF Conner Capel from Louisville Bats.

Flaherty has struck out 36 and walked only 4 this year

Quoting myself from this very thread on April 24th. Well, after his first victory of the season last night, you can double the above numbers. Also, how is it possible for a starting pitcher to accrue just one win while striking out 72 and walking only 8? Has to be a first in ML history. Unfortunately, I don’t know if even Skippy and all of the fine folks over at the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau could dig those stats out of their vast vat of information.

Flaherty’s BB/9 was well above 4 for a few years and now suddenly is 1.3. Why?

Looks like whatever Flaherty was having trouble with got fixed by the Tigers. He looks more and more like the pitcher we thought he’d turn into when he was a prospect.

Shoulder injuries take a while even after resuming okay to fully recover from. It could be that he is just now healthy as I recall him not looking 100% most outings last year. I’m also not surprised his BB% is even better so far as the many top pitchers continue to improve their control over the years.

I wonder if, after years of futilely trying to discover a different way to pitch, one which was effective and which his shoulder could tolerate, desperation has caused him to return to what was effective in the past. If that is the case, it is a matter of time until his shoulder objects to what it objected to in the past.

The Giants don’t seem worried, he’s still in there pitching in the 4th.

I agree on the thoughts about Flaherty that he is healthy again. Plus he’s a bit older and has undoubtedly learned a thing or two about pitching.

I’ll tell you how the Jack Flaherty story ends. Based on his 2024 campaign, he’s going to get himself a very nice contract this winter…..if Detroit doesn’t extend him first. Whoever does sign Flaherty is going to rue the day that they did. Buyer Beware.

I agree 100% Pugs. A bum shoulder is not a good bet for long term.

A really good article about Edmundo Sosa from The Athletic. The article is only for members, but the TLDR is that Edmundo grew up in Panama in a family of 4 kids in a single rented room with the parents sleeping on the floor. His father passed when he was 6. Moises Rodriquez saw something special in him from just playing defense. And Edmundo is very appreciative of just having the opportunity to play baseball and improve his family’s lives.
