Should we now troll Oriole’s fans after Gibson’s good Spring Training game?

If some of us think Palacios is better than Burleson, then maybe the Rays felt that way, too… Unfortunately, the two teams have to agree to make a trade. One side cannot dictate to the other.

If one wanted the best defense at all costs, then Siani should be a starter. Of course, like in everything, there has to be a balance.

Putting Walker at DH could not be done in a vacuum. Carpenter should not play in the field and ideally, Burleson wouldn’t either. Someone has to be in the OF and at least Walker is young enough that he could continue to improve. In that scenario, Donovan would also surely be needed in the OF, limiting his utility value, etc…

By supposedly fixing this, you would end up creating other problems…

I really like the Palacios/Kittredge trade. Palacios has never impressed me much. I know he had a good finish last season. Besides you have to give something to get something. And you can’t be afraid to pull the the trigger on a trade.

Carpenter should not even be on the roster. Can’t wait until the end of the season he’s got over 400 at bats because the FO couldn’t factor in injuries before signing him and saying he’s only gonna get limited playing time.

If he collects 400 AB’s, it translates to roughly 500 PA’s. Nightmare scenario…

BHC, I get how you feel, but it isn’t the off-season anymore. It isn’t even spring training anymore. The team is pretty much set and roles are pretty much set.

Well, dang. I was holding out hope that somehow Montgomery would still end up a Cardinal again.

    Walker at DH

Walker is young enough that he could continue to improve.

I take issue with both of these propositions.

The narrative as to Walker was that he was shifted off 3B because he was blocked, not because he wasn’t good enough to stay there going forward. So it is not RF or DH. He could get unblocked, at 3B or 1B. That could happen later this season or next winter.

My quick and rough calculation has Walker with 1,575 innings in the outfield. 900+ in major league, the rest minors and AFL. Going forward, more experience will help, and wear and tear will hurt. Which wins out, who knows, but there is no compelling reason to assume it will be the former. We know that Walker in the outfield is a difficult fit with ungraceful moments.

My thinking is he will end up at 1B. I hope that happens before he damages himself too much diving around in the outfield.

Walkers best position is “trade chip”.

bling, we’ve been through this before. Monthly data metrics provided showed Walker improved defensively as last season progressed. But since you don’t believe in numbers, you remain dead set that a 21-year-old who has been playing outfield for only a year and a half can never improve. Every glass is at least half empty.

Walkers value to the Cardinals is as a hitter and base runner and should be his entire focus going forward. Every minute spent on developing him as an outfielder is wasted development.

This is poor asset management. Jordan should be pointed toward his best opportunities to succeed, not fail.

As devastating to some as the thought may be, its not just about advanced metrics. If he stays in RF I see Allen Craig all over again. If he is deployed were the physical wear and tear is minimized, he could have a long and productive career.

Looks like Boras really mis-read the market for Monty. A one, possibly two year deal for $25M per. Man, we should have been all over that and brought him back.

But this is really a risky deal for Montgomery, as he only signs for one, possibly two years. He likely won’t increase his value that much in a year, but could easily end up on the DL or just not have a real impressive season. Who knows what kind of offers he got, but this is looking similar to when Lance Lynn turned down the $17.5M he could have gotten when he left us, and signed for quite a bit less with the Minneapolis-St. Paul Twins.

The D-Backs now have two ex-Cardinals in their rotation, their ace Zac Gallen and now Montgomery. Goldy might be saying, “Heck, if I would have thought my old team would be better than my current team, I would have stayed in the desert.” 🙂

Too bad for Goldy Arizona made it to the WS before he could with the Cardinals. Maybe he still get a chance to not only get to the WS but win it. I don’t like his chances with the Cardinals. But anything is possible.

Goldy did not ask to be traded. He was heading into his final contract year and Arizona felt they couldn’t afford to keep him as a free agent.

It turned out to be a great acquisition for St. Louis.

Yeah it has been a strange turn of events. I’m sure when Goldy left Arizona he would have never imagined that they would have returned to the World Series before his new team did.

Not so much BP guys, but in the old days most pitchers were aware that eventually they’d have to stand in the batter’s box. That thought went a long way in regards to on the field justice being served.

When Hicks has sustained success in games that count against good teams (sorry Oakland), then I will take notice. One spring training game (good or bad) isn’t nearly enough to draw any conclusions from.

Well Hicks just struck out 6 Padres in 5 innings. Giants leading 9-1 headed to the bottom of the 9th.

Genesis (properly pronounced “Hen-asis”) “Cabby” Cabrera, suspended 3 games by MLB for instigating an all out Donnybrook in Saturday’s game vs Tampa. Jack Flaherty turns in 6 quality innings, surrendering just one run on four hits and striking out 7 while issuing no walks in Detroit’s 3-2 win on Sunday vs Chicago’s White Sox. And speaking of the ChiSox, Paul DeJong got off the schneid with a towering tater in this game, but it was whacked off Chafin and not his old pal Jack “Flash” Flaherty.

Sorry Scotty, just now noticed that you reported the Cabby news yesterday….which is just like you….always at least one step ahead of the rest of us.
