The bottom line is a guy in his early 20s who can’t stay on the field is not going to work out long term.

Nootbaar had 347 PAs last year and 478 this year (14 more than Gorman). Noot was on the IL three different times this season (one more than Gorman). Wondering why he isn’t also on the “injury prone so not working out long term” watch. (Is it players I don’t like vs. players I like?)

That’s kind of a streatch Brian. Last year and 2021 Noot was breaking in and up and down a few times as is typical of a non-top prospect who sort of elbows his way into the picture. He did have some injury issues this year, and IMO backsliding performance wise. He came out of nowhere and was very good. We will see how he goes too. I would be more surprised if he has trouble staying on the field next year than if Gorman does..

Gorman has been chiseled in as a future middle of the order mainstay before he ever got here, so the backdrop is different. At his young age, performance ups and downs is not cause for concern, but an inability to stay on the field is, and that is reflected in his 464 PAs (compare to 99 year old Goldschmidt’s 675 and counting).

Like I said, I think it is something to watch next year. It is something I hope Mo keeps in mind when he is structuring a roster. I’d hate to see a Motter out there 60 games, but have zero confidence it won’t happen.

Their pedigrees and past expectations (or lack of them) are not relevant anymore. Nootbaar has become an integral member of the lineup in the view of many, while some fans want to see Gorman traded.

Their 2023’s were similar in terms of injuries and plate appearances. And Gorman not only opened in 2022 in Memphis but he also ended the season there. He was hardly established at that point, though he is now, as is Nootbaar.

I still contend that Gorman is no more injury prone than Nootbaar. And I am worried about neither in the context of ability to stay on the field.

Motter is irrelevant. They have many 2B options in addition to Gorman. The real depth problem was that Donovan got hurt. Maybe it is he who is injury prone… 😉

Saw where Ryan sheriff, former cardinal draft pick n pitcher has decided to retire. I always thought of him as ok far as pitchers go, we definitely have had ones not as good. Hopefully this means he has found something good on the other side of baseball to make his living. He seems to have appreciation for his time in the game. I wish him the best.

Alcantara will be out for the entire 2024 season after TJ surgery.

I mentioned that it seems like Pham’s participating in post-season games every year with some team or other. Lonnie Smith revisited?

I guess our director of Security is an ex-Cardinal now. Watch him go to another organization and have success after some sensitivity training. Lol

Maybe Pinder will have a better chance of making the majors with the Giants!

Dennis Higgins passed away. RHRP, 1971-72. Jeff City native. Lee Richard, infield UT, 1976, passed away.

Can’t recall Lee Richard at all. That was about the time I started following the Cardinals.

After looking him up,I can see why. 1976 was his last season. Played only 5 years total. Didn’t appear to be that good but he made it to the big leagues and that’s an accomplishment.

I don’t remember him either and we had season tickets back then.

I remember Dennis Higgins but don’t recall much about Lee Richard either, although the name is vaguely familiar.

The ‘70s were a lost decade for us Cardinal fans. The best teams and players were opponents. The last two years at the National Sports Collector’s Convention I have met two of the best ever that played then, Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt. Had them each sign an SI from 1976. A lot of people consider those two the GOAT at their positions.

I agree bike mike. Schmidt and Bench were about as good as it gets.

The NL in the 1970’s was dominated by the Reds, Pirates, Dodgers, and Phillies. None of the other teams stood a chance although the Expos were starting to get good by the end of the decade and the Mets had one good year.

Skip Schumaker is the NL Manager of the Year.

He and Stubby were the natural choices. Why in the world did they go with Oli? He was the least qualified.

I can agree with schmidt far as third basemen go though that would take into account everything cause just by defense, I wouldn’t say him. Bench is a little more iffy. I never really considered him that great defensively. Numbers may prove me wrong but the eye test for me says no.

Schumaker deserved it, good for him.

Oli was the bench coach at the time of Schildt’s dismissal so technically he had already been promoted ahead of Stubby. Skip wasn’t in the organization at the time.

I am not saying the Cardinals made the correct decision but I am just outlining the very rigid internal viewpoint of their promotion process.

I saw that “RHP Freddy Pacheco elected free agency”. Wonder if he would be interested in a minor league contract with an invite to ST? Not sure if he is healthy yet tho….
