Well we can always count on Tommy to fan the flames of discontent…

Maybe someone should explain to Tommy the overall implications of a worldwide pandemic. He’s stuck as usual in his own world.

Pham’s situational awareness skills not looking too good. If he (and any other players making millions) continue to pound that drum, then the Astros won’t have to worry about being viewed as MLB’s top shartheads any longer.

He was a jerk at Springfield. He was a jerk at Memphis. He was a jerk at St. Louis. He was a jerk at Tampa and now he is a jerk in San Diego. All that adds up to HE IS A JERK

    One excerpt from Rosenthal’s article:

The union received MLB’s latest proposal on Tuesday. The owners’ biggest concern is cash flow, the lost income resulting from each game at a time when it is preparing to advance money to major – and yes, according to sources, minor-league players, too.

And to think MM was chastised for not getting along with Pham. And Mo was castigated for trading him.

That fans have varied opinions and differing theories should not be surprising. For example, last week, on a different thread here, one respected poster said that Pham was traded to make room for Bader. Choose your favorite scenario.

I’d agree with the Bader theory if it weren’t for the Sports Illustrated interview.

Mo was castigated for trading Pham because he got next to Nothing back for him.

Those who castigated him didn’t look closely at who came to us in the trade, onyx.

One question I have never seen answered is why such a hero as Team Tommy was traded at all to San Diego. The answer is the same as at his previous trade – his mouth. He was given so many chances to overcome his injuries at Springfield that he felt that he was left behind in moving up. Tommy plays for Team Tommy and nobody else. When he made his stupid interview statement his mother was living in a trailer and had a waitress job in Las Vegas. At that time he had plenty money to improve her circumstances but evidently did not. Not sure if he ever has since then. He was not hesitant to run down the Tampa fan base what little there was of it. I hope he never shows up at Busch Stadium again. Hopefully, if he does, he will not get any kind of heroes welcome.

My favorite quote is where he accused the Cardinals of screwing him over his service time. Never mind the fact he was always injured.

This delay has to be tough on the players.

Here is the original article from the AP about the potential of altering the draft. More detail on the various alternatives that may be under consideration.

Most interestingly (at least to me), is the cited motive to “preserve cash”, not because more time is needed to scout players.

Consider the magnitude of the changes occurring around us and with us in less than one week…

I think that folks within 20 miles of NYC have a much different perception of Covid-19 vs Baseball. Approximately 1/3 of all the virus cases in the US are in this area. Our Gov. is asking for 100,000 hospital beds. In my city the Mayor, each evening via robo-calls, gives an update on the new cases. That number is more than most States.

Forget NYC, home of the NYM and NYY. The Mayor there has the city pretty much on lock down, fearing the spread. Its getting to look like a ghost town via TV.

This isn’t poor me or gloom and doom but people here are just concerned about staying alive… me included. I don’t expect to leave my property for months. I’m writing this merely to keep others informed about when they believe the seasons will start and it won’t be before August if at all unless the two NY teams play outside this area. I’m not paranoid… just trying to keep it real.

14NyquisT – Thanks, good info. But as large as NYC is most of the virus cases can be isolated at home for the quarantine period. Hopefully every case does not need to be hospitalized. I see the 1000 bed military hospital ship is being sent there too. Good move.

I live in a suburb of Springfield, Mo. I think the whole state has 10 or less cases as of yesterday, one has recovered but my little area of two counties has 4 of those. Finally yesterday they gave out the movements of the last person who tested positive and it was not anywhere we have been.
Since they are not giving out much info on the positives (movement areas and such) I have decided to stay away from my pulmonary rehab exercises for at least a couple of weeks. Groups of more than 10 are forbidden locally but it remains open despite having 40 or 50 at a time – but spread out on different machines.

Good luck to all those in heavily infected areas. If you are older, stay safe. Cards have the first of those Ozzie Smith Cards shows on YouTube. It may be the last for a while but had some interesting things.

For avid sports fans (like most of us), there’s ample video of great sporting events of the past to google and watch. I’m going to start by seeing what’s available from the 2006 and 2011 World Series.

Lots of video options to keep us busy, replay wise. Baseball of course, but hockey and golf aren’t bad choices either. I love watching old Masters telecasts.

Not advocating or criticizing any specific public policies here. Just offering a few numbers for perspective.

The concern in California and pretty much everywhere else in our fair nation is that the virus could reach a 50% or higher infection rate. This today from the Los Angeles Times:

“Governor Newsom on Thursday also asked Congress for $1 billion in federal funds to support the state’s medical response to the novel coronavirus, which he said he expects will infect more than half of all Californians.” (Emphasis mine.)

    ——————————–

According to the very informative worldometers website, the current U.S. population is 331,002,651. Half of that is 165,501,326.

As of this morning there were 13,789 confirmed infected Americans. Subtract 13,789 from 165,501,326 and you have 165,487,537.

Yesterday there were 4,530 new American cases.
At a rate of 4,530 new cases per day, to reach a total of 165,487,537 infected would take 36,531 days. Basically one century.

    ———————————-

But maybe the disease has not crested here. It’s entirely possible if not probable that the worst is to come in the United States. So let’s look at a country that has almost certainly already seen its worst.

Let’s look at the virus’ country of origin, China. The population density of China is about four times that of the United States. The virus began there of course, therefore no doctors or public officials knew what they were dealing with for awhile.

In China, despite the relatively high population density and the initial paucity of knowledge, infections over the past few weeks have now slowed to…well yesterday there were 39 newly infected. In the entire country. A country of more than 1,400,000,000 people.

How long will it take for 50% of China to be infected? Well, when I started typing this post 50% of the Chinese population equaled 719,661,888. And so far there are 80,967 infected. That means China must have 719,580,921 more infections to reach the 50% threshold.

At 39 new cases per day it will take 50,550 years for China to get there. (For simplicity I left out leap years. Forgive me.)

    ————————————-

Again, a 50% infection rate is what Governor Newsom expects — and therefore, at current rates, a few hundred thousand coronavirus deaths in California. Newsom is entitled to his terrors and opinions.

Based on everything that we know at this point, everything that has actually happened in our country and across the globe, why on earth would anyone agree with him?

    —————————————–

At the risk of being rude, I very likely won’t return to this topic to even check for responses. What’s there to respond to, anyway? It’s just some numbers. Numbers that seem to be somehow overlooked in every news report I read or watch.

Take it easy, folks. Hope to talk to you all if and when baseball returns in 2020.

The infection rate is not a constant. Neither is the testing rate. Those incorrect basic assumptions made render the math unusable.

Expect the numbers to climb faster than previous because of the increased rate of testing and getting test results. From hundreds per day previously the new improved system has it into the tens of thousands per day. But 50% will be a ridiculous figure and if the gov is building his billion dollar request on that number I say to pay him by percentages as they occur.
