I think I know the answer but if a player ops out and has no valid reason is the season counted as a year off his contract? I am thinking yes.
“Opting out” or “electing to not play” does not affect the term of the contract. For example, Fowler’s contract runs through 2021. That would be unchanged if he opted out or elected to not play. The only difference is if he opted out (valid medical condition), he still would get paid and earn service time. If he elected to not play (no valid medical condition), he would not get paid nor earn service time. Pretty sure I’ve got this right based on what I’ve read, but somebody please correct me if I’m off base.

I forgot there are two different phrases used (Opt-out and elect not to play)and do know the diffence but I got wrapped around the axle trying to figure out people like Cespedes who they are calling ‘opt out’ so I guess he has enough medical conditions to allow him to quit and still get paid. I don’t understand all they mystery we the fans are being subjected to on these test results. Do we have a large outbreak or not? A couple of players were sent back to St Louis by car but we don’t know who they are. Everybody is asymtomatic so nothing is showing yet, false positives, etc. Things are getting confusing. You get the fans involved when you start postponing games so you need to be prepared to explain things to them
I am assuming the information tweeted by Jon Heyman is the “disgusting” speculation referred to by Mo the other day. I guess the speculation turned out to be correct.

Heyman later qualified his statement when challenged. But the initial tweet is getting most of the attention as folks assume the worst.
Implied by Heyman: Players went to casino on the road. Got infected. Infected the team.
The timeline suggests this is probably not what happened. But those anxious to blame someone, anyone, have their storyline. That it may be invalid does not interest many. Welcome to 2020.

Here is another interpretation of what “going to a casino” might mean. Heyman has not responded as far as I can tell.
This report is not very clear. Players going to a ‘casino’ could be referencing them going to the drive-in outdoor Nelly concert at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in mid July; all the players who went wore masks.

He said he wasn’t aware of any factual knowledge but by saying “it would be disappointing if it happened” could be interpreted as leaving the door open.

The only positive spin I can come up with is if your team is going to go through an outbreak you would rather it happen now than in late September. Obviously the preference would be for no outbreaks for any team but timing could be everything in this abbreviated season.
I thought what the troubles the Marlins were going thru was bad. Apparently the Cards and staff members, said “hold my beer”.
Well, here is where the competitive balance issue rears it’s head. It appears the Cardinals will be down at least seven games played when they start up again. How in the world are the Redbirds going to fit these games into their remaining schedule?
1. If they could, I imagine it would mean several double headers. Imagine the strain on the pitching staff and the teams ability to compete down the stretch.
2. If they can’t, their fate is decided by winning percentage in games played? Imagine getting knocked out of the playoffs by one game or less and playing seven fewer games in total.Neither scenario leaves me with a “warm and fuzzy” feeling.
Any thoughts on when we might see campers showing up at Busch? I assume the roster move does not have happen before the physical move.
Cardinals media relations director Brian Bartow disclosed that he is one of the six positive Cardinals staffers.
Well one of the first disclosures was that the first two positive players were pitchers and I would guess that probably at least two more pitchers are also positives simply because pitchers tend to hang around with each other. I hope it is not any of the dugout staff but who knows.
MM3, based on Mo’s comments today, I would be surprised if the coaching/training staff has been spared.
gscottar, I heard Mo live and it did not come across to me like he was being evasive. He does choose odd wording at times. At a different point in the call, he also said that he had no concerns about player behavior.
P.S. He also said that their contract tracing gave them confidence that the infection occurred in St. Louis prior to the road trip. So even if someone did go a casino in Minnesota, it was not the cause.

To answer any of these kinds of future questions requires one to make some assumptions. The Cardinals hope no positives today for a second day in a row. That would allow them to travel home and work out Wednesday and Thursday.
If I was them, I would want the roster additions there at Busch on Wednesday when the team first arrives. Does that mean they have to announce the moves right then? I thought they cannot have extra players with the team, so that would suggest Wednesday transactions, but that is the rule when they are playing games.
Perhaps they have some kind of exception for this shutdown. If so, they might wait until as late as possible, on Friday, to ensure no one is injured in practice or comes down sick this week.
No matter which day the moves are announced, significant roster changes are ahead. I wrote a long article for members that digs into this and in the process, I predict the players I think will be called up from Springfield.
