For those liking Scott because of his minor league Gold glove, remember that Randall Grichick won a minor league Gold glove in 2013 but turned out tô be an average at best defensive outfielder in the majors.
Roby’s first pitch at AA in the top of the first registered at 100 mph. He really reminded me of Graceffo in how they both just seem so effortlessly explosive. Both Roby and Graceffo face injury concerns, but they have ace potential. Max Rajic is quite similar. I can’t put much distance between them, and all three appear to my eye as top of the order arms.
I don’t completely throw out the significance of a Gold Glove. But when I think about Marcel Ozuna getting a GG and the kind of fielder he was, I cringe and I wonder if the whole process of GG voting is some kind of shameless scheme hatched for some nefarious reason.
The validity of the award aside, the point is that his 80 grade speed isn’t wasted on near catches. His precise route efficiency is still developing.
The hope is defense won’t be his calling card. His value will be robust if he continues to hit.Potentially, Scott could easily match Winn’s offensive production over 100 games in AAA. He could also match Winn as far as standing out defensively at a position where there is no clear everyday starter in STL. Factor in Winn’s and Walker’s precipitous rise to ML, and it seems almost certain we will see Scott next year, either sooner like Wallker or later like Winn.
I don’t think there is any way that Scott would make the 2024 team out of spring camp, ala Walker the year before. No way.
All the steals are getting people overly excited about Scott, though. I spent a fair time with Matt Pauley on KMOX the other night in this same discussion, trying to keep 2024 expectations down.
Making his debut later, like Winn in 2H August, is FAR, FAR more realistic. Scott simply needs more development. I suspect they will buy time with Noot and/or Edman in CF in 2024 and see how Scott progresses in Memphis this coming season.
CC, Grichuk won that gold glove as a RFer. He’s been an above average defender in the corners, while being average in CF.
I could see Scott getting a bump to the big leagues semi quickly if the roster merits it…otherwise, I think he’s probably at Memphis most of next year. This is where I wish that the old September roster rules were still in place because it was a lot of fun to see the rookies in September.

I like Victor Scott, but I believe he’s going to struggle to hit at the MLB level so I’m going to go Cooper Hjerpe who I’m more confident in being better than average at the MLB level, assuming health, even if it might end up coming out of a bullpen role.
#5 – Cooper Hjerpe
I have Hjerpe next at #5. The best LHP of the affiliates and you will have to go down to the 20ish area to find another one. 22 years old (23 in March) he’ll be in the Springfield rotation and presently has an ETA of ’25. He’s a big strong kid (6’3″) and the #1 pick in ’22 draft (22th selection) and should see AAA next season. 51Ks in 41 IPs and an AVR of .183 at Peoria I see him being on cruise control the next two seasons. Only needs to cut down on the dingers.
If Hjerpe starts out in AA, then before he goes to AAA they will have to decide if he stays a starter or not. That will depend on whether he gets his BB/9 down or not. A starter with a high walk rate hardly ever amounts to anything, but sometimes a reliever can if he’s good enough. Hader this year for example. They can miss a lot and walk some guys because they don’t have to worry about going deep in the game. A starter has to get it over. Some guys get the walks down and some never do, like how it went for Helsley coming up in the system. Its too bad Hjerpe didn’t get more innings this year, but he didn’t, and we just don’t know how it will go for him.
Louis – Drew Rom is indeed eligible (just barely like Winn), although I have him at #38 on my list so it may be a bit . . .

K/9 above 10.00 every years (except the first stint in 2018).

The 30 IP in MLB this year? I don’t even take into consideration to judge him.
The only negative note is the HomeRuns (but I don’t know the ballparks of the Baltimore farm) and that he was born in 1999 (December!) while Hjerpe, McG, Graceffo, Robberse, Kloff were born in 2000 or 2001Rom is an example of the difficulty trying to continue as a starter in high level competition when you have a pretty high BB/9. It results in a lot of traffic and makes it hard to go deep enough in your starts. Guys like that always have trouble when they get to the top of the system. What Rom has going for him is he has maintained the big strike out numbers right up into MLB. That is the currently popular thing, lucky for him. He is kind of hittable also, but with that K rate, I wonder how he would do if he could go all out out for just an inning at a go. We will have to see if he lasts as a starter all year in AAA.
