December 7, 2023 at 2:26 pm #239252Seems to me Fernandez should follow Svanson, and Garcia is in my top 50 now.
December 7, 2023 at 4:27 pm #239262I have Fernandez just making my list, and don’t have the others on my list. I start with the fact they were all left unprotected, and then look for positives to move up from there. They have attributes, but obviously are not slam dunks. I decided to wait and see what they do in our system playing side by side with our crop. Hopefuly a gold nugget in there.

I’m really not sure where to put these guys without watching them play and looking better into them. For now, I’ve only read about them.
December 7, 2023 at 7:49 pm #239269Wow what are the odds? We both have Garcia at #61, Louis. I have Fernandez at #73 though.

32. KoperniakDecember 8, 2023 at 5:32 am #239273I will do a re-think on Fernandez. Is the thinking he was not protected because of the bad stint in AAA, which was a small sample? Or Boston’s system is so stoked they don’t have room? But in that case why not get something for guys that are not going have a 40 man slot, similar to how teams offed guys to us at the deadline, who we then put on our 40 man?
December 8, 2023 at 8:59 am #239280Well, Bling – the Yankees traded 3 pitchers to Boston to get Verdugo, four pitchers to San Diego to acquire Soto, and lost three pitchers in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 draft – including two in the top 30.
So, just because someone was taken in the Rule 5 doesn’t mean they were bad.
Though if Fernandez struggled in AAA, it’s difficult seeing him make the leap to MLB this year.

32. KoperniakDecember 8, 2023 at 1:25 pm #239288Why not get something for guys not put on the 40 Man roster? Just because you dont think a prospect is ready doesnt mean you dont like them as a prodpect. We left Baker available twice I believe. Pages was left off last year. The list over history is long.
December 8, 2023 at 2:49 pm #239289In general, guys taken during the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft have almost no real value to an organization for them to trade them. That’s because they are guys who have been around long enough who weren’t good enough to be protected on the 40 man and still weren’t good enough to be protected on the 38-man AAA roster. Those guys are just really not prospects at all. That’s certainly a little different than guys taken in the major league portion because those guys definitely are prospects and could have been traded for something, although most don’t have a whole lot of value yet. For instance, what do you suppose Bedell’s true value is? I’d guess maybe $500,000 in a hypothetical trade. Is that enough to have tried to trade him away? Or do you just take your chances? I think it depends on how good of a chance you think there is that guy is getting taken. Plus, if he were taken, we’d have been paid $100,000 and had a chance to get him back for $50,000. I think the Cards made the smart deal with Bedell by just risking it. But I can’t really speak for the Yankees and their 3 guys they lost.
December 8, 2023 at 2:55 pm #239290To illustrate the point for the Cardinals further, if Brian’s math was right, the Cardinals had only 36 guys eligible for the rule 5 draft. We know that they protected 35 of those players and selected 3 to get to 38. That means that only 1 Cardinal player was eligible to be taken in the minor league portion. I don’t know who that was, but if he was our only player not protected, then he probably wasn’t worth being taken. I sincerely doubt the Cardinals even considered trying to trade him.

cardsfan64Participant#33 – Moises Gomez
#34 – Matt Svanson
#35 – Ryan FernandezI still think Gomez has value and has something to prove at the big league level. This spring will be very important for him! Svanson looks real good on paper!
December 8, 2023 at 8:45 pm #239359Loutos had a miserable year. The O’Neill trade would not impact any of the rankings so far.

35. SvansonRobertson looks like a really exciting get. He may be our best relief prospect now. And you know how much I love Granillo.
I’m not as excited about Fernandez. He looks solid and could be good but it’ll take time.
December 8, 2023 at 10:07 pm #23936733. Fernandez – 96-97 MPH fastball, slider rated at 70.
Also, the Cardinals apparently think he’s
good enough to stay in the bullpen all
season or they wouldn’t have spent $100K
drafting him. As cardsfan64 pointed out,
he’s ranked #26 in the Cardinals Top 3034. Svanson – With the ERA and WHIP that Svanson has
posted during all his time in professional
baseball, it seems like he should be ranked
higher. It’s hard to understand why one of the
scouting reports on him says that his ‘pitches
don’t miss many bats’ when he consistently
gets 10 strikeouts per 9 innings. I’m ranking
him for his stats which are impressive.35. Loutos – He sure looked promising at the start of 2023
season…. 96 MPH FB with movement, sweeping
slider, curveball. Ranked #32 going into 2023.
Would surely have made a substantial move up
in the rankings if he had maintained the rate
of improvement that he was making prior to
2023. Loutos just had a bad year in 2023.December 8, 2023 at 10:43 pm #23936933 Cornwell
