23. BaezI’d forgotten how young Josh Baez is, until I glanced again at his Baseball-Reference page. In fact if he were merely one week younger, in “baseball years” he’d have been a teenager playing at Palm Beach. Quite the challenge, that.
I hate when prospects fan a lot, and that certainly describes Baez (194 K’s in just 146 games). But he’s a polished base stealer already — 45 of 51 — and a solid defender by reputation. So cutting down on the strikeouts might be the only truly significant change he needs to make, going forward.
Bob, speed doesn’t do any good if you can’t get on base, and Baez was terrible with the stick. His numbers were propped up by a lot of walks. Pitchers throw more strikes once he gets out of A ball, so he will be in big trouble. As far as I can tell, he is still riding on 2nd round hype after 3 years in pro ball.
I can’t decide whether he would be better served doing a third year at PB, so that his age catches up to his level, or moving up to AA where his terrible batting eye might be less of a problem with pitches being over the plate more. AA pitching may not be sophisticated enough to just let him get himself out.

Baez strikes out too much, but that is what happens when you hit in deep counts. Since batting averages are so low with two strikes, I wonder if more Cardinals will follow Holiday’s approach implemented with Cody Bellinger where strike outs drop dramatically while hard hit rate collapses because the hitter is slapping the other way with two strikes?

Can a young player even advance without analytics favoring him?I have seen little evidence that Cardinals batters change their approach with two strikes, or as a tactic in any other situation. Rather, I think they are coached to achieve their optimized swing and to repeat it consistently. Sometimes I wonder if it is in a batter’s best interest to strike out rather than make contact that will negatively impact their average exit velocity, no matter how desperatly the team just needs a runner advanced. The zero exit velocity from a strike out is not part of the avg exit velocity calculation, so the reality of the situation is skewed.

Rom gets the tiebreaker to win as #21. Pages will be #22 and Baez #23. Rom ends up much higher than I thought he’d end up, but he’s been in our list since early on. This time almost everyone voted for him. Pages also got a lot of votes and Baez just snuck in ahead of Prieto and Granillo.

23. BaezIt’s interesting to me that Mejia and Baez were often paired last year as two very high ceiling prospects who might bust. Neither had all that great of a season, although Baez’ was a bit better. And Mejia has zero votes so far, yet Baez just pushed his way in. Just an observation.

24. Andre Granillo. “Granny,” as he’s affectionately and ironically known, has been groomed to become the next bullpen success story from the system.
25. Mike Antico. Something just tells me that this guy finds his way onto an MLB roster for several years. Maybe the new rules will aid these types (80 baserunnig, 60 field, 40 hit, 30 power) to make it more. He did show a little more pop this year but I wouldn’t bet on it continuing.
26. Cesar Prieto. Maybe squeezes in as a utility guy some day but we have a lot of those types in the hopper ahead of him.
