According to this article out of Chicago, Theo’s meeting with Boras went three hours and he asked Boras for time to move payroll to make room for Harper.

The Dodgers are the clear leader in that part of the race.

the improvements the cardinals have made are subjective to a point. yea they added goldshmidt which is a net positive but you are replacing somebody in the lineup probably the guy who cant play any defense. sorry not in baseball mode yet, I cant think of his name. but his offensive numbers were solid so how much does goldshmidt improve that. miller is coming off as bad season so that’s how he is projected. you cant project off of yesterday. add the fact that by moving carpenter to third, we will still have a poor defense. yea goldshmidt is really good but carpenter was pretty good at first but horrible at rthird so we are actually losing there in my opinion.

Have you checked Carp’s defensive peripherals at 3B? Might surprise you.

to me I think everyone is over valuing goldshmidt. if he is on a solid hitting team, then hes a nice great fit. the cardinals had a very inconsistent hitting team last year. carpenter was great for about two months of the season, the rest he was horrible. yadi was generally fine but I don’t like him in the two hole and both guys are getting older. wong has always been inconsistent with the big team and seems injury prone. fowler, well what can you say. if he does anything, its better than what he has done but that isn’t saying much. I love bader but he needs to learn to hit to his strength. he chases too much and tries to hit for power too often. he should use his great speed and just learn to put the ball in play. unless he just hits it right at somebody, he has a chance to get on base on any ground ball. munoz is fine as a hitter but horrible on defense. ozuna is an interesting one, if he recovers from his shoulder issues, he could be great. but that’s a could be. all that is why adding a guy like harper makes great sense. ive always believed in hitting line drives and hard ground balls. harper does that, he doesn’t try to do launch angles and change his swing generally to try to elevate. importantly he also is very willing to take a walk, something other players on this team can learn from. he reminds me of pujhols in this. pujhols for trhe first 8 to 9 years hit line drives, hit opposite field, took his walks. an all around great player which benefitted everyone. after that he started trtying to pull too much, swing at thing he shouldn’t, hence his average went down and his on base percentage went down and his value to the team went down. he no longer really made others better. now injuries might have been a part but I always felt he tried to do too much the last couple years. but by then, ownership had let the team around him go down. holiday was fine but he wasn’t no jimmy Edmonds in his prime. so maybe he felt the pressure. while harper isn’t going to be an all timer like pujhols, the way he goes about things offensively can make a team that is offensively inconsistent, much better than it would be without him. he would also make life much easier for goldshmidt.

willie, I might suggest that you add paragraphs to your posts. They would be much easier to read.

How can you overvalue a guy who has finished top 10 in the mvp vote almost every year of his career?

I understand the idea of bringing Cecil and Gregerson to camp since we have to pay them anyway, however, let’s not forget that they are currently taking up 40 man spots. If we wanted to make more additions this winter we will need the room so you can’t say there is zero reason to cut them now.

You can’t overvalue Goldy, he is the best thing since sliced bread. I think Harper would have been a better fit for the Cards even at his inflated value. But is a moot point and forward we go with the perfect guy, class act, perennial MVP candidate, and who will age perfectly fine losing little to no abilities. Yes if you sense sarcasm and disappointment you read right. I am happy Goldy is here but it is really getting tiresome to hear over and over how perfect he is.

gscottar, what you say is true, but I do not consider the 40-man spot a big deal. We know if/when when 40-man spots are needed, guys off the bottom can be dropped, just as we saw with Meisinger a few days ago.

I am still hoping they clear off some of the roster redundancies in a trade for one higher-quality player.

No doubt NJ. A better idea would be to give $400M to a guy who was hitting .220 most of last year.

Of course it was the better fit. You see it your way and we disagree. But do me a favor stop being so condescending with your answers. It is a matter of opinion and mine is a valid as yours. You can gloat all your want during the season about Mr. Perfect and how we dodged a bullet with Mr. Overvalue until then stop talking down to us that wanted Harper instead like we need to be shown by experts like you the error of our ways.

We’re not talking down to people who want Harper. Some of us just don’t care for him and don’t want him. Especially at a ridiculous price.

Toying around trying to learn how to “quote” others, Brian. Looks like quoting others is not my bag.

It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Paste (or type) the words to be quoted into the post box.
Highlight the text with your cursor.
Click the third box just above, which says B-QUOTE (short for block quote).
Add any comments of your own if you want after.
Hit red SUBMIT box at lower right.
    That is it!
If you goof up, you get 10 minutes to edit the post.

    Merry Christmas!

Just wanted to see if it worked.

    It worked. But its backwards.

Wish I could delete this. The old website was much better.

Make sure the info to be quoted is highlighted when you click B-QUOTE.

You will see that the tags that are loaded automatically when you click B-QUOTE will have the word blockquote surrounded with carrots < > before the quoted words. At the end of the quote will be carrots < > surrounding the word /blockquote (with a slash in front).

Everything in between blockquote and /blockquote will be included in the quote.

(I can’t actually write the tags out because the system thinks they are live and wants to make them into a quote.)

P.S. I believe you have the TRASH option on the gray menu bar right above your post for 10 minutes. Or as long as you can update a post, you can delete everything in it.

Sorry, but the old days are never coming back. I am doing my best to help folks with the forum we have.

well gscotta im saying everyone is overrating him based on his value to the cards lineup when you put him at first base, not in his value as an individual player per se. carpenter is a cdecent first baseman, will goldy be better, yes, but I feel its marginal. meanwhile carpenter at third is not very good. his fielding is passable but his arm is horrible and that isn’t something stats are gonna accurately tell you unless someone has a stat for plays that could have been made but didn’t but aren’t errors, just lack of arm strength, accuracy, etc. will goldy hit, yea he should. i have no problem with goldy, the cardinals didn’t really have to give up anything to get him though that does concern me that someone else wasn’t willing to do better. maybe they know something. but getting goldy for basically nothing doesn’t mean wqe shouldn’t go after harper. the two together would be great. would it keep us from resigning goldy, yea probably but that isn’t guaranteed to happen if we don’t sign harper. sometimes you need to focus on the needs of today, not worry about tomorrow. that’s one of the cards biggest problems. far as paragraphs, i don’t really believe in them. i never have a problem reading whats written and my eyesight is horrible.

to bccran, no i haven’t checked carpenters defensive stats at third. im sure they are fine. but stats can be misleading. they don’t always tell you plays that should have been made that weren’t. an error may not have occurred far as officially but if the play could have been made by a player with at least an average arm, then it really is like an error. in my view, i still believe in the eye test. i see that he has a very weak arm. i saw guys get on because of it. and regardless of what analytics say, errors and plays that should have been made of which there were many last year, hurt a team in a multitude of ways that stats cant really nail down.

We’ll be seeing more of Carpenter at 3B next year. But, as I recall, most of the problem with Carp’s arm shows up as throws that are off the base, forcing the fielder to make awkward stretches to catch the ball and get the out. Maybe Carp could buy Wong and Goldy a six-pack now and then to compensate.

1982 – Carp hit 36 home runs last year, and had a .374 OBP and .897 OPS. It’s a shame he isn’t also a Gold Glove at 3B, but I guess you can’t have everything.

I actually do quotes differently! I hit b-quote and then paste or type what I want to quote and then hit b-quote again.

I’m not trying to be condescending to anyone. We all have our opinions and the freedom to post them and try to justify them. I have learned it is best to be thick skinned and not take things personally on this board.

I think Harper is a very good player but I don’t think spending $350M-$400M on him is wise. The Goldy move was a classic Cardinal move that Walt Jocketty would have made and I think it is going to work out great for us.
