Fowler, O’Neill, and Martinez are the options right now. I’ll take
Martinez, with O’Neill in the wings spot starting and coming off the bench. Backed up by Thomas, Arozarena, A. Garcia, and Williams as the season plays out.Fans: We want a left handed batter!

I’m not the world’s biggest Fowler fan, but I’d guess that he will bounce back to an OPS in the mid-upper .700s in 2019. That won’t be terribly exciting (imagine Tommy Pham and his likely .900 OPS and above average D in RF that we gave away) but platooned with O’Neill and/or Jmart it will be serviceable.
Because they are not going to get Harper then that lefty bat is Fowler. For the people that’s most of you that do not want Harper your condescending comments are a little tiresome. The point about getting Harper is not about his personality or if he’s a generational player he isn’t. It is about taking a chance on the rare good player hitting free agency at 26. You are buying his best years and of course is a gamble but isn’t everything? The team is willing to pay a lot of money towards Goldy at age 32. I rather give it to Harper and again I am not saying Harper is as good as Goldy. But I rather buy good youth than above average decline.
Is serviceable all you want? As for Pham…he`s gone and good riddance.After years of being a guy who generally defended the FO and their style of business I have finally gotten irritated enough to vent .Now as I said earlier that if the FO pulls a good trade aor two and upgrades I could rethink my view but I am waiting to be impressed.Fowler in RF and Carpenter trying to play 3B does not impress me.I realize Carp will be at 3B until his arm falls off.Thats likely a given fact.Fowler makes me puke.

Carp. Good table setters at the top of the lineup for Goldy, plus Jose would see some good hittable pitches.Bw52, don’t you consider Goldschmidt a good trade? Seems like any goodwill from that deal wore off very quickly. I get that it puts Carpenter at third, but overall, it is a clear positive for the team, right? I know you want them to do more, but this was a lot.

I actually would like to sign Harper. My issue is that people who want to just cut Fowler and sign Harper are not dealing in reality. Not only would the Cards have to outbid the pack for Bryce, but they would need to eat all of Fowler’s salary, too. So you’re looking at something like a $400M outlay ($350M for Harper, $50M for Fowler) on only Harper’s production. Is he worth that? I dunno…if he has a couple or three 2015 type years and few clunkers, then probably. If not, it becomes an albatross fast.
NJ, what if they just don’t see Harper as the right fit, considering everything? That does not preclude them from other moves later. It wouldn’t have to be an either-or with a Goldschmidt extension. He may not want to stay for all we know.
Is serviceable all you want?
Not necessarily, but if you’re asking if the team can withstand “serviceable” in RF in 2019 and still contend… I’d say yes, they can.
This team needs a few things to go their way, and none of them is absolutely a star RF:
1. Carp, Ozuna and Goldy to have the seasons they’re capable of. This will drive the offense.
2. Injury luck, especially in the rotation. If healthy, Cmart-Mikolas-Flaherty-Wacha-Waino/Reyes should be a plus rotation.
3. The bullpen to bounce back. Whether this includes outside help or positive regression from the guys coming back…a shutdown pen will make this team an NL contender.
Onyx, I am being totally serious. Why do you believe the entire 2019 Cardinals season, making the playoffs or not, hinges on Fowler? What is behind it, please?
The Cardinals cannot very well say they “Are all in for 2019” if they plan to keep Dexter Fowler in right field.
Not just Fowler but the entire FO because they have done such an amazing job the last 3 years putting a team on the field that made the post season….seems like they still have no idea what they are doing
BHC, did the Cards say they are “all in on 2019”? I missed that quote, but if they said it, then yes, one could certainly shoot holes in it. Do you have a link? I’d like to read it in context. Thanks.
P.S. I do recall a reference to the fact they shifted their algorithms more to current and less on future when deciding to push for Goldschmidt. So they did go all in on him for 2019, because he has just one season under contract. But that is very different than going all in on the entire team for the season. The latter seems like such a grand pronouncement that it should have gotten a lot of (negative) attention if it really was said in the way you are interpreting it.
Onyx, thanks for the reply, but I don’t really know how to respond further. Your concerns seem so fundamental, I sense that any one player would not matter.
These quotes don’t say “all in on 2019” but they do indicate a level of urgency we haven’t seen in the past.

Yes, urgency. I suspect they would not have added a Goldschmidt with just one year remaining if they weren’t coming off the last three seasons. It feels like doing that was outside their normal comfort zone. Sort of like the loss of Taveras pushed them into getting Heyward, also with only a year remaining. We will have to see what the other moves ahead will be as to our perception of their urgency level.
gscottar, thanks for sharing the quotes. Girsch specifically said they are NOT all in on 2019, which I suspect we would all agree is reality. (And we don’t all agree about much of anything!)

Ironic, after the Cards donated a hefty sum to one of Boras’ clients last season and it cost very dearly for the negative value they got.
