It seems like some minor league teams can expand their roster for the playoffs? is that so? Or is it just the rookie leagues where they often don’t have a full roster of 35?
August 29, 2018 at 9:35 pm #67401Maybe Nogowski and Young could backfil all the prospects Memphis has lost to STL.
August 30, 2018 at 6:54 am #67428I do not believe roster limits change for the post-season, but up to three rehabbers are always exempt.
August 30, 2018 at 9:22 am #67445Good post gsc. I’d take Clapp over Schlitz anyday.
I don’t know much about Clapp other than the fact that Memphis has won a lot of games the last couple of years. Toronto seems to have their eye on him.
I can’t imagine he would be doing a better job in St. Louis than what Shildt has done so far, but who knows?

ParticipantYou remember Juan Yepes (TCN#29 in May). The guy we got for Adams who was hitting a ton at Peoria earlier on this season.
After a season+ at Low-A, he was sent up to Palm Beach and hit a roadblock. Well he’s in a 5 game stretch where he’s 8 for 18 (.444). Maybe there’s some hope for next season.
He was still an Honorable Mention pick in Aug. and maybe the Texas League will be kinder to him.
Anyway, we got Adams back.

ParticipantWith the GCL-Cards season over they have sent Herrera to Springfield, and a trio to post-season bound Palm Beach, C-Jackson, 2B-Shaw and P-Roberts. Jackson will be used as catching depth as O’Keefe was just DL’ed. Roberts could probably used some work at a higher level. Shaw is the one that is intriguing. The 19th rounder this season was probably left in GCL because DWilliams was moving to 2B from the OF and would be getting most of the playing time at Johnson City.
So Shaw played out the season with the G-Cards as a 21 y.o. He got off to a good start (.355 in June) but has tailed off to hitting just .200 in Aug. It could be that his superior K-rate of .079, (less than 8Ks per 100 ABs) was what got him the kick up.
The three additional players at PB leaves their roster at 26, so a move will be needed today. It could be someone is headed to the DL or someone is headed up to Springfield to finish out their season.

ParticipantToo bad that the Palm Beach (Adv-A) Cardinals lost their second straight game 3-1 to Fort Myers (MIN). That leaves them out of the post-season.
There was some solid progress made as players moved up from and moved into PB.

September 7, 2018 at 6:25 am #68549Gallegos is on the 40 man. I projected he will be called up when Memphis is done.

ParticipantWatched the Chief’s win Wednesday night in Peoria. Oviedo is big strong righthander to keep an eye on. Definitely will be on my prospect list.
September 7, 2018 at 9:43 am #68556
stlcard25ParticipantReports were that Oviedo had been pitching at a higher velocity this year. Obviously, walks have been an issue but the stuff seems to be there. It feels like he’s been around forever but he’s only 20. He’d be in the Palm Beach/Springfield area next year and possibly Memphis/callup at 22 in 2020, which is not a bad timeline at all.
September 7, 2018 at 10:30 am #68558Oviedo’s walks are beyond being an issue. They are a show stopper. He seems to have improved slightly the second half but still has a ways to go.

ParticipantRealize Carioca that you probably haven’t seen Oviedo pitch. If you had you would see the upside. Lots of young pitchers have control issues at times even those at major league level.
September 8, 2018 at 7:17 pm #68737Haven’t seen him but don’t doubt his potential. Just saying that the walks have to come down. As long as he keeps improving like he did in the second half I will hold out hope for him.

ParticipantGrrrr…. I just did an analysis of our Memphis and Peoria teams going into their championship rounds.
POOF…. it was gone. To bad it took me some time to put it together. Maybe I’ll redo it later.September 10, 2018 at 4:53 pm #68911I know that the Dominican league players are likely a long way, if ever, from playing at Busch Stadium, but I am counting maybe 17+ players that the Cardinals could bring stateside next year. There were at least 5 in season graduates, which I don’t remember ever happening. That couple with good drafting, and being able to spend more international should bode well for coming seasons.
September 10, 2018 at 10:39 pm #68972Although a small sample size, Cabrera has had 2 strong relief outings. Please, please figure a way to get him on the 40 man roster. Or at least Tommy Layne. We need a viable lefty option, and Cecil and Schreve aren’t it.
September 11, 2018 at 7:38 pm #69044Johnson City has released David Oca. Transaction took place on Sep 4

Participant40 man roster space is so crowded and room has to be made for Genesis Cabrera, Ryan Helsley and Lane Thomas for sure. Really wish there was room for Tovar and Ravelo who are very good players and still relatively young. Tovar was said to be best defensive infielder in the organization. Unfortunately both will be free agents this fall in addition to Alex Mejia and Jose Godoy.

ParticipantNice win (10-4) for Memphis in the opening game of their League Championship series(best of 5) at Fresno. Leading off (4 for 5) is a guy that has taken over the SS position, the switch hitter Tommy Edman.
What exactly do we have here? Edman has hit well this season, in somewhat limited numbers at Memphis (66 ABs) he leads the team in batting at .318. During the season he bounced between Springfield and MEM, coming up for good on Aug 28th to help the Redbirds down the stretch. This is a team that already had Sosa and Tovar, two shortstops.
With the way Edman is hitting he might have taken that spot away from both. On the Cardinal Nation prospects list(Aug 13th), Edman#25 already had passed Sosa#26 before his call up.
I’m commenting on him because there isn’t much chatter about him in Cardinal future plans. Should there be? He’ll probably start ’19 at Memphis and may just hit and field his way onto the Cardinal 40-man roster. Maybe we just got something here.

ParticipantAndy Young has scratched and clawed his way up to AAA Memphis. The Redbirds already had 7 infielders so I’m guessing that the organization liked Young’s power (’18 = 21 HRS) better than the Springfield OFers. The Redbirds will go with 13 position players for the play-offs.
Young raised his BA up since he moved up to Springfield from Palm Beach on July 21st from .276 to .319 against the AA hurlers. Young has also hit pretty evenly against righties .326 and lefties .302.
Young and Bader will participate in the Arizona Fall League presumably to allow the organization to see what these two are capable of, and if a spot on the 40-man roster is in their future.
September 12, 2018 at 4:33 pm #69178
stlcard25ParticipantEdman hopefully can be the next Greg Garcia type player, except switch hitting. He did have a pretty solid .331/.385./.438 line from the right side compared to .291/.344/.389 from the left side. He’ll start at Memphis next year and be competing with Schrock to be the utility guy of the future.
September 12, 2018 at 7:33 pm #69184UncleDenny
ParticipantAndy Young is definitely in the running with versatility and POWER.
