ParticipantBleacher Reports put out a ranking of MLB affiliates today. Its the first post-season ranking that I’ve seen.
The prospects are categorized as follows:
Tier 1: Prospects who have an elite skill set and All-Star potential. This is the cream of the prospect crop.
Tier 2: Prospects who have a good chance of becoming impact contributors at the MLB level. These are the prospects who can be found in the second half of leaguewide top-100 lists or just on the periphery.
Tier 3: Prospects who profile as fringe MLB contributors or young players who are still too raw to project any higher. This tier represents the bulk of prospects around baseball, though more than a few are still capable of climbing up to the next tier.No Cardinal prospects were placed in the first tier and three were placed in the second tier (Hudson – Knizner – Helsley.)
The Cardinals dropped from #11 to #22 based on all the talent lost, who are now playing with the Cardinals. The article also stated that the Cards don’t have an elite prospect at the present time. In contrast, the #1 Padres have 6 tier 1 prospects.

stlcard25ParticipantIn contrast, the #1 Padres have 6 tier 1 prospects.
They’re also the Padres, so you know what’ll happen.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
I do think that’s a fair assessment of the Cards’ system right now. So many graduates are making an impact that the farm can afford to retool a bit and let talent percolate up while the big league team reaps the benefits of a lot of the good to great talent being young and cost controlled. They will definitely need to be smart and reload through the draft and international signings, though.

ParticipantMaybe they’ll stop stealing our guys.
Don’t forget that there will be 29 other teams with the same prescriptions to improve.

stlcard25ParticipantDon’t forget that there will be 29 other teams with the same prescriptions to improve.
Of course they will. But now that the kid gloves are off a year post-hacking penalty and with the international bonus money restored, they’ll finally get to flex their full muscle in the amateur portion of the pool. Traditionally, that has been good news for the prospect lists.
September 13, 2018 at 10:47 pm #69289Nice to see Gorman taking a better at bat tonight. He coaxed an 8 pitch walk, then singled next time.

ParticipantI wouldn’t put Helsley in the tier 2 category. It’s been a lost year for him.
Gorman should’ve made tier 2, in fact, so should Montero. Hudson is clearly a tier 1 player too. I would imagine Knizner is as well. Catchers make the allstar team too and Knizner checks all of the boxes of a potential AS game attendee for that position.

ParticipantPads…. Gorman did make tier 2 in fact. I don’t know if that was my mistake or that they changed they’re list midday. I suspect the latter.

ParticipantKeeping Bowling Green off of the scoreboard for six plus innings was no small feat. Prendergast (GS=81) has won 2 play-off games and has catapulted his stock as a starter in the organization and will be headed to Palm Beach in ’19. Jake Dahlberg has been impressive also and will no doubt land at PB also.

ParticipantState College was fairly weak regarding their rotation. Forced to forage around in their bullpen they got some help from Holba, Baird, Schlesener. Cordero was the only starter from below (GCL-Cards) that was added to the Spikes season-ending rotation.
Same thing at Johnson City. Their opening-day rotation of Diaz-DeJesus-JGonzalez-Ramirez and Villalobos was quickly turned over to Zamora-Leahy-Parsons-Schmid and Aker. Only Aker (GCL-Cards) was sent up to help.
There can be no way of telling what the Peoria rotation will look like in the Spring but Zamora and Parsons look like two good candidates from JC, while college prospects pitching in the GCL, Dellavalle and Coward could make the jump and there’s Roberts, who may jump to Palm Beach due in part to the lack of good starters at the lower levels.
Gingery may be a mid-season addition, and the draft could provide some help as well.

ParticipantIt may be of some interest to note the Expected Time of Arrival for some of our top prospects that appear on the MLB site. While I don’t agree with many of their prospect rankings, they may be more accurate in forecasting when we can expect our younger players to arrive in STL.

The #STLCards lineup simply hasn't produced this month. The regular starters' wRC+ this month (100 is league average):
Ozuna – 177
Munoz – 165
DeJong – 90
Wong – 72
Carp – 72
Bader – 51
O'Neill – 46
Martinez – 12— The Kevin Wheeler Show (@WheelerShow101) September 14, 2018

ParticipantVery exciting to see the over-achieving Redbirds win the AAA Championship in grand fashion. I didn’t expect a blowout but the trio of Mejia-Arozarena and Thomas did a number on the Bulls revolving door pitchers. Herget was very solid, as he was most of the season.
Some crazy stuff went on with the sprinklers going on, William’s batter’s interference, that Thomas bomb, Mejia 5-5. Great game to watch. I have become a fan of Clapp and hope we don’t lose him. He let Herget pitch his game even though Herget seemed to be tiring, but was dazzling the Durham hitters.
Kaat and whoever else that called the game were absolutely terrible. Missed information, misinformation and seemingly little knowledge of the teams and the players. Kaat needs to retire. Mozeliak was boring as usual.
The Cardinal’s post-game celebration was a bit minor-leagueish but it was nice to see the principle owner, Peter Freund, make the presentation. Fruend is a part owner of the NYY and Trinity Sports Holdings which includes several other minor league teams. I’m sure he was proud of his Memphis team winning all the marbles this season.
September 19, 2018 at 11:13 pm #70015If Bowman is healthy, they should cut him and add Cabrera or Layne. Cabrera like ALcantara, has to be added any way, or risk losing him in the Rule 5. I believe Bowman, like Lyons could be outrighted, and sent to Memphis.
September 19, 2018 at 11:26 pm #70017With another good season, Lane Thomas could zoom up prospect rankings, and/or be in St Louis by the middle of next year. He seems more consistent than Garcia. I still have Garcia ranked ahead of him for now. I want to see him repeat 2018. If it wasn’t for Fowlers contract he might already be in the Lou.
September 20, 2018 at 7:23 am #70025PadsFS
ParticipantI don’t understand what Fowler has to do with Thomas?
September 20, 2018 at 4:20 pm #70078I was trying to do some research for the prospects rankings and noticed something. Rangel Ravelo has had a couple of very good seasons with Memphis. Why hasn’t he been given a chance in St. Louis? He is a contact hitter and seems to hit RH pitchers a little better than LH pitchers.
September 20, 2018 at 4:41 pm #70079John Nogowski is another hitter who is a contact hitter.
I don’t think these guys will be all-star caliber game changers but I really like seeing players who don’t strike out 20% of the time.
September 21, 2018 at 6:20 am #70095Fowler has everything to do with every young OF prospect. He will be inhibiting player development because of his salary for the next 3 years, and the Cards reluctance to release him. And no one would trade for him. Nice 17 mill 4th outfielder.
September 21, 2018 at 9:22 am #70119Forsch, I really like Ravelo and Nogowski also but I think they were blocked by Voit and JMart. Maybe they will get a shot next year.
September 21, 2018 at 12:20 pm #7015714NyquisT
ParticipantFirst base has become a conundrum for the Cards. Carpenter seems to have laid claim to 1B, at least for the near future. Then there’s JoMartinez who needs to play there for at least some ABs. The rest he gets from playing in the OF. Now Adams is in the picture and I can’t guess what his future is here. Plus there’s others on the roster that can play there in an emergency.
Where that leaves Ravelo is perhaps he’s looking at another organization that he has a better chance to make it to the majors. Nogowski has already played two seasons at Springfield and if Ravelo stay at Memphis, where does leave Nogowski? I hope that the player development people have a plan. Ravelo might intrigue other organization’s because he also can play in the OF…. and he’s proven he can hit… at least at AAA.
Since Fowler’s name has come up, what about him trying first base at ’19 spring training? He has the size and if his fortunes change next season he can platoon there, since he can switch-hit. Just a thought. The big question is how he’ll produce going down the road?
September 21, 2018 at 4:52 pm #70179UncleDenny
ParticipantUnfortunately Ravelo will be a free agent.
September 21, 2018 at 5:37 pm #70184Ravelo FA, Nogowski to AAA.
September 21, 2018 at 7:24 pm #70187What a creative idea! Fowler at first base. Don’t know if it would work, or of it has any chance of happening. But its a fascinating idea.
September 21, 2018 at 8:12 pm #70199First base? Should we be looking at more chances to get Fowler in to.games or less?
September 21, 2018 at 8:58 pm #70227UncleDenny
ParticipantWould someone please tell Dan McLaughlin to pronounce Memphis correctly. It is NOT pronounced MEMPUS but Memfis.
