The Cards have signed Alec Kisena (kih-seh-nuh) a 6-5/275 RH starting pitcher. Previously pitching for Gateway(IND.) based out of Sauget Ill., the 22 y.o. was drafted by Det in the 16th rd. of the ’15 draft. He may be the first of outside young pitchers, especially non-drafted free agents from this year’s draft, to be added to the farm. A sure sign that the organization has realized the lack of good arms at the short-season A level. Also, some ranked pitchers moving up to Peoria have slid back because of poor performance.
If a number of pitchers drafted last week don’t pan out, it will be time to circle the wagons at the lower levels.
Most of the time seasonal batting averages can be deceiving regarding what have you done for me lately.
You will note that certain players are carrying a team at different parts of the season. In early June its been Kirtley and JoMartinez carrying the load. You may not realize it by looking at their total ’18 figure.PEORIA CHIEFS BA month-by-month.

The Chiefs roster isn’t that large and I don’t think other assignments have been made so I would guess Joe Gomez and Cory Malcolm.
Big win for Peoria’s Jesus Cruz last night, a 1-0 squeaker. It helped the Chiefs stay 1.0 games behind Clinton(SEA) for the top stop in their division which has 5 games left in the first half. It also kept them 2.0 up on Quad Cities(HOU) for 2nd-place which would make them eligible for the League playoffs in September. GO CHIEFS.

Jonathan MachadoState College’s Starters are off to a good start. Casadilla, Nicasio and Rondon have pitched very well. (Rondon’s game last night was excellent).
Last season the opening rotation was Tewes-Castano-Mulford-Shew and MaVorhis. It was Shew and Castano that stood out, Tewes, Mulford and MaVorhis had horrible Junes.
Shew moved up to Peoria by mid-July and MaVorhis was moved to the bullpen after only two starts.Surprisingly, only two players from last year’s draft are on the Johnson City roster: Zach Jackson(#6) and Donivan Williams(#14).
David Oca who missed all of last season shows up on the JC roster. He’s a potential starter with Junior Gonzalez, Edwar Ramirez, Noel DeJesus, plus draftees Kelly, Leahy, Schnid, Sisk, and FA Jake Sylvester.
Ramirez was a fixture in the JC rotation last season making 11 starts. JrGonzalez started 8 games at GCL-Cards, DeJesus got 5 mid-season starts for GCL and pitched very well.
I meant to comment on this yesterday… Starlin Balbuena is back at GCL, but as a pitcher. The 6′-2″ once third baseman had a miserable ’17 at the plate and became a bench player. He was always known for his arm and now he’s going to try to make it his chance to progress in the minors. I wish him well.
Palm Beach’s Juan Yepes was replaced in yesterday’s action because of a head injury. After tearing up the MWL for Peoria (.415 in 94 ABs), he’s finding the FSL a challenge (.176 in 74 ABs). Its taking him more time than expected to get acclimated at adv-A ball. A mere 20 y.o., he has time… and he can hit. I hope that he is Ok…. a trip to the DL is just what he doesn’t need.
Mike O’Reilly gets the startering role tonight for Springfield. He has been absolutely terrible in his last three starts there.
He started the season at Palm Beach (adv-A) and pitched very well in his two starts there. Up he went to
AA and made two excellent starts there. Now the brilliant organization sends him to AAA Memphis to fill a bullpen spot necessitated by the Memphis express replacing STL the oft injured there.Now they send him back to the Springfield rotation, and like I said has been so bad. Before be moved up to MEM he pitched 12 inn. in those two starts for SPFD, zero earned runs. In these 3 starts after returning to the S-Cards, 12 inn. 11 runs. Somehow a young pitcher that had been successful a short time ago is sinking in quick sand. I hope he can shake the bad streak he’s been on and returns to the pitcher he was.
This is just one more case of the organization screwing up a young arm.
Cards have the youngest AAA team and second youngest AA team in all of baseball
Raffy Ozuna is hitting .526 in GCL-Card’s 4 games… also 4 errors in the field. The team’s BA is .351! Pereira was excellent in his 7.0inn and earned a GS of 78.
Walsh pitched 7inn of 1 hit ball for PB. No run support for him either… the PB-Cards won in a 2-1 walkoff in 10 inn. At least those Cardinals won their game.
Way too early to get too excited about but 18 games into the DSL season the Cardinals have the top player in OPS with Diomedes Del Rio at 1.583 and 5 others in the top 39 in a 45 team league.
Some, including Del Rio appear to be from the Cardinal overexpenditure in 2016.
We generally are bottom feeders in the DSL but have done better of late. Now in spite of going with two teams we seem to be doing better in the field.
It appears that the Cardinals are again doing what they do as well as anyone in the game. Finding the hidden gems. Stocking what appears to be two competitive teams with severe spending limits.
Of course, as the season goes on some of the lofty averages will suffer as other teams make adjustments but Del Rio is in his third season of professional baseball and has been in the adjustment game long enough to have a chance for continuing success.
Possibly our Latin system restarted by Jeff Luhnow in 2004 is doing quite well.
Del Rio is off to a nice start, but a third year in the DSL is not great, especially for a player who turns 21 in September. His career to date has been unremarkable.
The ultimate review of the Latin American program should be in how many players it has provided St. Louis in those 14 years. Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes were already big-bonused guys well known before signing, but of course, were not yet finished products. Players who emerged once in the system who stand out to me are Oscar Taveras, Magneuris Sierra and Sandy Alcantara.
The Cards certainly bought more lottery tickets with the July 2nd class in 2016, but the investments have not yet paid off – and they still have one more year of penalty to endure.
Anyone have info on DSL Blue player Carlos Soler? He was hitting well but hasn’t played in 3-4 days.
Wow, Leandro Cedeno has 8 homers in his last 16 games over 2 years. Small sample size I know, but hopefully Cedeno, Gorman, and Baker add some major pop to our system.
Also very interesting to note after not being able to develop catching prospects, there are at least 5 that stand out. Herrera, Ortega, Rodriguez, KNizner, and Kelly.
The catching tandem at Johnson City of Jackson (20 y.o.-6’3″) and Soto (19 y.o.-6’2″) have to be considered fairly good prospects also. There’s some room at State College for one of them.
There’s no doubt that Cedeno can hit, but he’ll have to hit well enough to find some room above which is quickly getting crowded.
John Nogowski is still rehabbing with the GCLs and having some fun… he even stole a base. However, all of his 10 hits have been singles (.370).
Mieses was HBP last night but ran for himself and played OF for inning before being replaced. I always worry when a guy gets hit and pulled.
The guy that gets little respect, Ravelo-MEM, is 16 for 32 (.500) in his last 10 games with 7 BBs and only 2 Ks. He started in LF last night just to keep his bat hot. It was his 19th start in that talented OF and he has 28 starts at first base. Maybe he’s the guy that should be in St. Louis.
It may be premature to say this but I was excited to see that Justo Francisco made his pro debut yesterday for the GCL-Cards. He pitched 2 innings of relief (1H- 3Ks). The 6’4″ 12th rd pick in this season’s draft is one guy I’ll be watching to become a genuine steal as the 363rd pick.

This is another case of the organization screwing around with its players to their detriment. Moving O’Reilly up to Memphis and sticking him in the bullpen was obviously a mistake… who suffers? The player.
Is he supposed to stay in AA forever?
All organizations move some players up. It may be to see if they are ready. It may be to fill a temporary need. If this is a mistake or screwing around with them, I would rather find out they don’t have the mental fortitude, now, rather than later.
