After winning 4 in a row last week and having Memorial day off, the C-birds opened a series with Corpus Christi on Tuesday and lost 11-4. Greene couldn’t make it out of the 2nd inn. Last night it was the same story they lost again 11-4 and Woodford didn’t last through the 1st.
Strange that last week he beat CC 4-0 going 8inn and got a GS of 77… yesterday his GS was 9. That 77 was Woodford’s highest of the season and was the third solid start in a row. He has struggled through the rest of the season and I’m sure that the organization is very concerned about their highly ranked prospect.
The Springfield rotation has been in turmoil all year. Woodford and Greene remain the only two to pitch regularly for the team. Tewes pitched 3 sad starts before being DLed. Helsley was called up to MEM and O’Reilly passed through. Chris Ellis was inserted into the rotation and Shew has arrived from Palm Beach. Jones pitched 3 games in April and was injured and now has been back for 3 starts.
The thing is that if any of the starters had pitched like Helsley did they would be at AAA where there is a spot being held down by Herget, that was up for grabs. With Reyes returning and CMart coming back, that spot will be needed for the Cardinal pitcher being back to AAA, and the window will be closed for a while… opportunity lost.
I know that most folks coming here are probably STL-only fans, but do any of the others check out this topic? I know there are some that have interest in the farm system, I just was wondering if they read the comments here. Let me know, OK.
Danny Hudzina sustained a head injury in last night’s Palm Spring’s game. No news about a DL stint. The beach-Cards just brought up Wood Myers from EST to replace Juan Yepes who was DLed yesterday.
Thank you for saying that CC. I know you are a big fan of the farm system like myself. I really like to see these guys progressing on a daily basis. Once they hit the big club, I root for them to succeed. So many of the present-day Cards came through the system, and others have been acquired and have played in the system. Once they get to STL, I already know about them very well.
I also read your notes on the farm when I see them posted, 14NyquisT. I consider it a nice supplement to the daily roll that Brian posts every morning.
It is a shame no one can displace Gilmartin as a starter at Memphis. And is there anything on Guilmet being let go?
I saw that Guilmet pitched yet another great inning. HIs chances of being on the big club are pretty good.
C-27… I noticed that Greene came on after Shew and have to wonder why. His last outing (5-29) was a disaster and lasted only 1.1 inn. If he isn’t used as a starter that would leave 4 in the rotation (Ellis-Shew-Jones and Woodford. There’s a chance that Warner gets a call up to AA. Still, Greene hasn’t pitched that badly to deserve being replaced. Maybe he is getting a “rest” to fix something picked up in his last start?
Its pretty rare to see a prospect go 5-5 as Trosclair did in last night’s pasting the S-Cards put on San Antonio (best record in the TL.)Also, Lane Thomas powered two HRs (11), and added to that 17-hit attack.
SPFD has been playing the two best teams in the league the past two weeks. Not too much success with Corpus Christi 1-5, but they swept San Antonio on the road last week. That’s a pretty tough achievement considering SA’s home record. Springfield stands at 4-1 against SA.
Maybe Pearce is going back in the rotation pushing Greene to the pen? It seems like Jones would be more deserving of a move given their records.
With all the juggling of the two rotations for STL and MEM, that 5th spot in MEM is important so as not to disrupt keeping the premier starters at AAA (Hudson-Helsley-Poncedeleon plus Gant recently sent back down) pitching a regular schedule. And if there is more movement, having someone that can be pulled from the rotation at any time becomes significant.
In STL, CMartinez is due back, the failed Reyes comeback and Gomber being placed in the Card’s bullpen,
has effected how rotations would be set. There is also the possibility of Flaherty being sent down, which was covered in the piece written by B.Walton regarding that situation..https://thecardinalnation.com/flaherty-vs-weaver-a-service-time-rub/
Basically it comes down to… “By returning the 22-year old [Flaherty] to the minors for at least seven days more, the Cardinals will be able to retain his services for an entire additional year later.” B.Walton
C-27….likely Gilmartin goes back to the pen and Kevin Herget gets the 5th spot for the Redbirds. Its not a matter of “better” in this instance, but rather versatility.
I wonder if Arturo Reyes tenure is near the end of the line. He has not pitched well at all. And can they find a way to get Guilmet and Greene to St Louis? Lets see what Greene does at AAA first, but Guilmet has been nothing short of fantastic. I suppose they could move Alex Reyes to the 60 day DL. Just not sure how his second opinion on his lat strain went.
Mujica may be in the same boat as ArReyes. AAA players are hitting .306 against him, plus an ERA of 5.56. I know the FO had hoped he could grab a relief spot for the big club, but it isn’t working that way.
There a few relievers that are having great seasons with very solid 2018.
