18 Luis Gastelum
Gastelum just seems to be a lock. We forget his frame is still projectable. An increase of just one to two mph would make him Devin Williams light.
We valued Swanson here last year on this listwith him showing us everything we saw last year while at Springfield. Gastelum has done the same.I don’t see a world where Hansen ever starts a game for St. Louis. So much would have to go wrong. He just doesn’t scream bulloen arm without any velocity or strike out pitch.
I agree that I don’t see Hansen as being a long term asset to the big league club. I think Gastelum may pitch in the big leagues, but he has had so little success that I have him even lower in my list then Hansen.
BTW, the standings look to be very tight right now! One runaway, but with three regulars yet to vote, the 18 spot is very much up for grabs! Remember, tiebreaks are “first in” so get your votes in early!
I’m not sure if I think Love is in the top 5 relievers in the system. Maybe not even top 10 depending on how you define a reliever.
Let me think through this:
I got Granillo at 1 if we’re not counting Hence, Hjerpe, or Roby. Otherwise those guys are 1-3. Franklin is probably number 4 depending on if we’re counting him or not. Then Granillo. Then Gastellum. Then I’d still put Young, Watson, Burns, and Saladin over Love I think. So either 7th or 11th best reliever in the system is where I’d put him. Number 1 feels pretty crazy high.
Shouldn’t O’Brien and Svanson be high on the list of top relievers? Just wondering if I’m missing something.
Gastelum is the reliever of the year with nearly 14 k per 9 innings. Ricardo Velez is the arm with all the helium. He is rising fast.
Velez is gone. He elected free agency today. Along with a bunch of others.
Also lost Drew Rom, Curtis Taylor, Mosqueda, Ralston, and Berrios along with several others I don’t care much about.
Love Nigel’s pick of Luis Enrique Gastelum at #18. I have “Gasy” at #19. Don’t ask me why, but whenever I see his name, ex-Braves old timer utility outfielder, Mike Lum comes to mind. As a quick aside, din-din tonight was 2 Oscar Meyer all beef bologna sandwiches with Kraft cheese slices(one with mayo and the other yellow mustard), 2 hard boiled eggs riddled with salt & pepper, baked beans drenched in apple vinegar and for dessert, 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies.

I’m not quite sure I understand the enamor for Pete Hansen. He has never really excelled and even in the minors rotations he has been in, he is more of a #3/#4 type guy with a 3.93 ERA as a 24 year old in AA which isn’t that impressive. A 21.1 K% isn’t good but at least the 6.3 BB% is. Projection wise I don’t see it either as he has a horrible fastball and I expect him to struggle much more in AAA with more advanced hitters and would expect him to be a pure depth type guy for the majors. He isn’t really viable in the bullpen as a fallback option due to his lack of stuff.
I am curious of the new FO’s thoughts of Hansen. The new FO clearly loves big fastballs with great stuff and Hansen is the old regime’s pitchability guy with a weak fastball. Does the org really give him a shot or leave him unprotected from the R5 draft (I’m not sure he would get selected).
