So I am thinking we can do a preseason top 25 ranking. It will be bulk, so you can input your top 25 at any point after, say, the first spring training game. I’ll decide on how we do the tabulation sometime in the next few weeks (probably weighted average). So start getting your list ready with all the new guys (and perhaps more to come).
I agree. I intend to use spring training to parse out some of the higher level new prospects. I’m hopeful that we can add at least one more worthy of the top 25 in a Romero trade before the start of Spring Training.
Are we going to do an updated top 50? Or maybe it might be better to do a mid season top 60 before the all star break?
I was thinking we’d do a bulk top 25, but so far no one has seemed to show interest. I was hoping that getting eyes on the new prospects in spring training would spark some interest. So it’s TBD. I’m still planning to update my top 25 before the season begins.
I think Rodriguez will be my top prospect after Wetherholt exceeds his rookie status. Doyle is second IMO, because of his slow start, although his last start was very good. Mathews is dropping, and Hence has dropped even more. Fajardo and Van Dyke have gained the most likely too.
I don’t know if anyone wants to tackle a mid season top 50 prospect list, but I have made mine. I guess we’d have to wait for the draft though. There will be a lot of top picks added afterward.
My bulk post draft rankings. Crooks will graduate very soon. Some guys that dropped big time for me are Clarke, Hence and Chase Davis. Hard to project any of them to do much, for various reasons (mostly injury, but for Davis he’s just too passive). The injury arms are hard to rank but I tried to not penalize them super heavily. Some of them could easily jump back up before the season ends. I ranked 8 (!) new draftees in the top 50, which makes for quite the potential haul from this draft.

50 Cal RandallNice list 25. I think Odle is near my top 20 though. I also have Rincon is my top 30. He may be the only relief prospect we have now that could help the big club. Not sure where to put Condon.
That’s interesting, because Odle and Rincon are two guys in specific that I had a hard time ranking. Odle is sort of the helium guy this year and Rincon I was high on last year but I felt he got a little rushed to Memphis. But both guys will have a shot to move up my list before the fall. Overall I like where the system is at as a good chunk of guys have had a good year this year and shown the ability to take a step forward. I’ll have to update my FV grades toward the fall, but it feels like we have quite a few more 45 and better guys in the system right now (I had 13 in the fall), including a bunch of draftees, trade acquisitions and guys who’ve just taken a step forward.
No Dobbins or Fitts? I think both have a much higher chance of being quality big leaguers than Hence.
I started prepping my list last night and will do so for the next few days and share when I have it.
I am not going to rank Crooks, Jordan, Torres as they either have surpassed eligibility or will soon due to days in the active roster criteria for rookie eligibility
I’m willing to be corrected if wrong, but we have always followed Brian’s rules for eligibility, which have been 130 PA for position players or 50 IP for pitchers. The 45 days is very difficult to track for me personally. For now since it’s informal it’s no big deal but in the fall it will be that way unless Brian does his differently.
Understood on that. I also personally don’t want to rank those guys with so much big league experience. A little experience like Gastelum or Mautz I am fine with and putting on my personal list.
I am looking forward to your list. It’s one of the most well thought out lists of our posters. I’m curious how your list compares to my thinking.
Thank you! It may be a few days. I only got the top 6 guys in maybe 30 minutes of looking into them. I do try to dig up a good amount of info. After the top 6 there seems to be a fairly big drop off.
Kyle also hates to rank anyone who has reached MLB. But the two of us have to be consistent and the old guy prevails.
I noticed Honeyman down near the bottom of the list posted above. He is holding his own (.283 BA, .800 OPS) with performance tilted upward. A good second half would attract notice, but we have acquired so many new shiney toys it is hard to bring a Honeyman future into focus.
Another guy quietly having a good year and barely hanging on to a top 50 slot is Ramon Mendoza who has been in the org since dinosauers roamed the earth. What do we think will happen with him?

The issue with Honeyman is health. He’s just been hurt so often that it’s hard to see him staying healthy enough to get an MLB shot. Still, I think the organizational depth is such that he doesn’t really move much in FV for me while moving down significantly in my rankings. We’ve just added a lot of talent above him since last year’s rankings. He was ranked 35th for me last season (35 FV/50 FV high end with extreme risk) and we added 14 guys that slotted above him since then. I’d have to sit down and think about it but I feel like that’s about what he would be for me now, with the risk maybe bumping to high after playing fairly well (and injury-free) at Springfield this year.
Honeyman I think will land 40ish for me and maybe a little above it, but not much. The ceiling is lower if he can’t play CF as his bat doesn’t have a lot of power in it to play RF.
By the way, JJ Copper at BA said speaking with front office execs, the AA and lower ball had an “unintentional” change where a ball hit the exact same as last year would travel 8-10% further. For guys like Honeyman, that makes me question even his modest 8 HR total more.
