Tanner Franklin. I don’t know anything about him but will have to read on him. 100 MPH it sounds like so must be going straight upside which I do like
Think he was a relief pitcher in college, but I may have him mixed up….Tennessee had a lot of pitchers.
Think he throws a heavy cutter as well
You are right. He was a RP at TN. I’m guessing they try him as a SP though. Interesting they took Franklin who also has a 70 grade fastball. Bloom must love elite fastballs. Franklin looks to have closer potential if he sticks in the pen, but I imagine they will let him start some to see what he has and if he can develop his breaking pitching and chanegeup. Numbers don’t look amazing career wise due to high BB%, but you are drafting for future performance and not prior. Vitello and crew did help him massively improve his BB% to 5.5%
Yeah I agree, he will most likely be a SP starting out…I saw Tennessee play a few times don’t think I saw him….but they are definitely adding velocity with the 2 pitchers so far
Jack Gurevitch. FG had him at 52, BA, 90, and MLB 144. 1B only which I don’t like, but hoping he has some real power projection
Gurevitch has the chance to be a very good hitter at the next level. He has a handsy swing from the left side of the plate that is capable of making extremely loud contact, and he’s registering very high exit velocities this spring. He absolutely crushes fastballs, but he has a tendency to be a bit over-aggressive and chase pitches — especially breaking stuff — out of the zone, though some evaluators think that can be toned down. It’s mostly hard line drives to all fields, but there’s some belief there’s more power to come given how hard his contact has been.
Strong and compact, Gurevitch has played some third base this year, but most feel like he’s destined to be a first baseman. He gets very high marks for his toughness, leadership and overall makeup, which might give teams more confidence he’ll maximize his tools.
From the MLB site above…..that sounds like a LH hitting Goldschmidt…hopefully he can be
Reading on Gurevitch he sounds like an ok pick. Posts huge EVs and has a chance to be an impact bat with really good hands and a hitter at hear. 1B for sure though. Sounds like really good intangibles with leadership and work ethic
Here is what Fangraphs had to say about him. They were the highest on him.
After Ike Irish, might have the best hitting hands among college players in the draft. Undersized for a potential first baseman, but not lacking strength. Big hip/hand separation, hips open but don’t compromise the outer third, back elbow collapses and hands find the baseball wherever it is. Can flatten his path to do oppo damage versus high heaters, or dip and rip to his pull side. Fairly complete hitter, changeups are his lone bugaboo. Has power. 110 mph EV90 this year, 17 bombs, strikeout rate dipping each season. Has played some third base in the past and looks awkward but not awful there, worth a shot in pro ball but is probably a first baseman. Isn’t gonna be Pete Alonso or anything, but Yonder Alonso? Maybe.

A lot of fans may have forgotten that the first pick ever taken in the history of the MLB draft was also a player who featured what is undoubtedly the most patriotic play ever made on a Big League baseball field. Just a bit shy of 11 years after he was the first ever Big League draft pick, Cub’s CF’er Rick Monday rescued the American Flag from being set afire and burned by a couple of disloyal and traitorous turncoats on the OF grass at Dodger Stadium on April 25, 1976. I clearly recall watching the highlight replay of that spectacular play by Rick Monday on the national evening news the day after it happened and I’m getting a little misty eyed as I key this in. We could use an entire army of Rick Mondays.
The first few minutes of the draft telecast on MLB Network was Monday talking about being the first drafted player ever, 60 years ago. It was well done.
Randy Flores continues to ignore that the best value in the second round of the draft is college hitters.
You can’t develop power hitters if you don’t draft them.
So you’re saying they should take a college hitter no matter what in the 2nd round? I am confused by that statement but even more confused because they did take a college hitter in the 2nd round.
Well I see that we drafted another LH OF yesterday. We certainly don’t have enough of those in the organization.
