I don’t know that but I do know that he is still owed $65M after this season. Yikes! I never liked how that contract was structured. Completely kicked the can down the road and will not allow us to add as much the next two years.
Yep, $65mm for 2 remaining years. (Plus the 2nd round draft pick and associated slot value, which clearly impacted the overall 2024 draft strategy.)
He has to be a 4-ish WAR/yr pitcher over those final two years to get the contract close to in the black for that period. Currently, he’s pacing toward 4.1 for this season, so the contract probably will be in the red over the final two years. Likely still tradable, but not a ton of value there after this season. If the Cardinals were interested in trading him (doubtful), the time to do it would be now.
Lynns’ start last night completed the 2nd time thru the rotation, in the 2nd half. The next time thru will include Fedde.

Appears Pallante is bullpen bound, for now. He put himself in the 2025 rotation conversation. He stepped up when others didn’t. Hard to forget, I hope.Well it wont include lynn since he was just placed on 15 day diabled list and may end up longer. Good thing we got fedde.
McGreevy deserves another start after his performance today. Especially, with Lynn going down with injury.

40.4 MikolasThe team had lost the last 5 games Pallante started. So he throws one down last night and dares them to find a way to lose it and and couldn’t. Good, I like that. But we need to remember that he is only two starts away from getting his head handed to him by the Mets in a game he couldn’t stop the bleeding in the 5th and didn’t make it out of the inning. He’s promising, but the same could be said about Liby who’s been promising since dinosaurs roamed the earth and nothing has come of it. The Cardinals are not good at the final step, so we will have to hold our breath.
By all rights it really should be a pitcher since we have lots of pitchers on the 40-man but there’s no obvious choice to DFA. Loutos, Roycroft, and Leahy are the 3 guys who are on the margins as middle relief. I doubt they would choose Leahy as he’s been moderately successful. I also don’t really want to lose either of the other 2. The other options are Zack Thompson who is out of options next season and really hasn’t been all that good in AAA this year or Jose Fermin who is probably redundant because of Saggese now (except Saggese isn’t on the 40-man). I think whomever they choose will be lost to another team.
For me, I’d pick Thompson. I just don’t think he’s ever going to make it as a starter and he’s not a difference maker in relief. But I assume the Cardinals will choose to lose Loutos or Fermin.
Or somebody could be put on the 60 day IL. Carp or one of the Memphis pitchers now on the IL anyway.
The most obvious cut would be one of Leahy or Roycroft. But given that there isn’t a lot of relief help waiting at Memphis, it might make more sense to free Fermin (and his .926 OPS).
Leahy is the obvious cut from the 26-man roster. On the other hand it might be best for Pallante’s development if he went down and joined the Memphis rotation until the end of August. Then, bring Pallante back for the September roster expansion.

No go on either.
Carp’s injury is not severe.
The latter is not allowed. A player has to be in the majors before going on the majors IL. Teams do not call up already injured players for that purpose because the players would then receive MLB service time and salary.
In hindsight, maybe it wasn’t a great idea putting McGreevy on the 40 man yet.

FWIW, I am in favor of keeping the relief arms. Fermin has no future here anyway. He is a good AAAA player.
Yeah, Fermin would be my first or second choice with Thompson as the other. Thompson could probably be a solid reliever, but I don’t think we need him any longer. Fermin really has no place because he’s not a very good defender and not a good enough hitter to use as a pinch hitter. He’s a backup to places we already have a backup.
