ParticipantThis draft pretty much depends on their top pick far as how it will grade down the road though you never know. But the facts are that the cardinals havent drafted well for a while or they just suck at developing talent. Wetherholt should do well though its a big step going from college to mlb. He wouldnt be the first guy that looked great in college but just couldnt make it in the big leagues. I need to check out the overall draft, north carolina had some good hitters, like to see where they went.

cardsfan64ParticipantI found a few signings reported by a Baseball America writer:
The #Cardinals signed 14th rounder Mason Burns for $80,000.
— Carlos Collazo (@CarlosACollazo) July 17, 2024
The #Cardinals signed 10th rounder Bryce Madron for $50,000. Slot value for the 291st pick is $185,000.

cardsfan64ParticipantOne more:
The #Cardinals signed 6th rounder Josh Kross for $369,100. That's slot value for the 171st pick.

July 17, 2024 at 9:34 pm #260752The Cardinals organization doesn’t look like it needs another catcher, especially one that is ‘offense first’ (per Brian). The scouts must like his bat a lot to give him $369K. It will be interesting to see if Kross winds up at first base or in the outfield.
July 18, 2024 at 12:36 am #260755Mud, I liked that pick actually. Switching positions is almost a given, but having an “emergency” backup isn’t awful to have as a bench guy with some pop. In a game situation right now, if Contreras had been pulled and Pages had to leave, I couldn’t guess who would step in? Donovan?
July 18, 2024 at 8:19 am #260769By the time Kross would have to go on the 40 man and potentially appear in STL, the Contreras contract will be over. Herrera and Pages, if still here, will be into their arb years and not dirt cheap anymore. So I don’t see any issue with drafting an offense first catcher to be a catcher. Assuming he can handle the D aspect decently enough to be playable.
July 18, 2024 at 9:41 am #260772Jimmy Crooks is looking pretty good at Springfield. He might make make it up to Memphis this year, especially if Herrera gets traded. Also, Leonardo Bernal is doing pretty well at Peoria. It looks like both Crooks and Bernal will get to the major leagues at some point. Don’t know for how long. Sammy Hernandez was acquired from the Blue Jays for Genesis Cabrerra at the trade deadline last year. He’s at Palm Beach and he’s only 20 years old. Brian and Blake like him. I get the impression that Kross is viewed more as a hitter, not really as a catcher.
Not sure about this. But I think Oli put Edman behind the plate for a couple of innings when the Cards were getting blown out last year or the year before. They can always find somebody in a pinch. Obviously, nobody wants to see Edman or Donovan behind the plate in a meaningful game.

Also I think of the lost 23 and 24 second rounders as being worth the cost to get what is our 3rd and 4th best major leaguers in Contreras and Gray.

Overall, Flores has not been good at drafting, with the exception of 2020.
This year’s draft strategy was a head scratcher, as they failed to take advantage of their best draft position in decades, outside of the first round.
Also I think of the lost 23 and 24 second rounders as being worth the cost to get what is our 3rd and 4th best major leaguers in Contreras and Gray.
The Cardinals are stuck in mediocrity, and signing Gray coming off of last season will contribute to their mediocrity for years. It has affected the draft, and his escalating salary will affect free agency.
July 18, 2024 at 11:12 am #260778The inability to develop any rotation pieces at all, much less top of rotation, left no choice but to sign Gray, or somebody like that. The loss of the 7th pick in the second round and the pool money was a consequnence. The inability to develop a catcher, combined with an inabiity to develop middle of the order bats, left no good choice but to sign Contreras. Nothing good can happen until the org can develop something besides fringy pitchers and complementry position players. People want to be optimistic, but this has been a problem for many years and there is no reason besides hope to expect results to be any different going forward. Starters continue to fade at the top of the system, power hitters continue to sputter and limp off onto the shoulder. We have to sacrifice the future to sell tickets now.

July 18, 2024 at 12:06 pm #260786Winn, Donovan, Edman and Burleson were drafted by the Cardinals and have developed nicely through the system. Let’s hope Gorman and Walker are on that path, too. Now the Cardinals need that from their organizational starting pitching.

Look at his other seven years and tell me which first and second rounders have produced like first and second rounders should.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.

July 18, 2024 at 4:52 pm #260812I’m assuming they have open roster space, or are guys getting cut also?
July 18, 2024 at 5:32 pm #260813The 11th rounder was a Sr. sign. This guy better be better than his stats. He had no leverage. The 16th rounder was from Juco so he had max leverage.
July 18, 2024 at 6:19 pm #260815Does anyone have anything on the 5’9″ pitcher from Mo State signed for $10k ? Brandt Thompson. Just looking at the video clips, easy compact motion but doesn’t finish ready to field his position. Looks like 1,000 other guys.
July 18, 2024 at 7:14 pm #260817I for one cannot wait to see what they wind up paying Weatherholt! It seems that the Cards punted on any upside talent in order to save money for one player. I still don’t get how Weatherholt had all that much leverage to demand sooooo much overshot? What if the Cards draft him & offer him slot money-only? Does he opt out of the draft & head back to school, coming out again next year, risking injury & as a senior sign-with NO leverage? Even if WVU (or more likely LSU) gives him $500K in NIL money for the year, he likely would lose much more money than that by delaying the start of his pro career by a year-entering free agency a year older.
Baseball, far more than any other sport, is a game of failure. If it’s me drafting players, I would be taking as many bold chances as possible in search of greatness! I’m not a draft expert-at all, but I’ve heard many times that, players should all have at least one MLB “carrying” tool, the thing that an org can build upon & maybe extract more. The Cards seem to think that grit/trying hard is a carrying tool. Grit should be a separator-all things being equal, not the lone reason a player is drafted. In any draft, 80-90% of the players will never see AAA, let alone MLB. If that’s true, why not aim a little higher & dare to fail big, instead of trying to mitigate risk (i.e. trying to fail small). I’ll spare you all the added words & just say that quote from Teddy Roosevelt about failing while daring greatly comes to mind. The Cards rarely, if ever, are willing to be bold & possibly risk failing greatly…
July 18, 2024 at 8:18 pm #260821Gronky, the way I heard it is this. The Cards wanted Wetherholt but suspected he would be gone. So they told him that they would sign him for X dollars if he fell to them, but he had to let the teams picking before us know that he would require that amount to sign. The amount being high enough that they would not want to do it.
I do not know if that is accurate. I don’t know what happens if the Cards try to backslide on the amount, or what would have happened if somebody else drafted him and offered slot despite what he said he wanted, but I assume no one wants a disgruntled 1st round pick on their hands.
I sure hope he pans out because we spent the whole rest of the draft casting downstream.
July 18, 2024 at 8:21 pm #260822Who did you want them to take with the 7th pick. This guy is widely considered to have the best chance at a big league career in the draft. Pick someone else and say goodbye to your job. Fans would run you out of town.
July 19, 2024 at 6:36 am #260835This guy is widely considered to have the best chance at a big league career in the draft
I disagree with this statement. Do you really believe he has a better chance than Charlie Condon and Travis Bazzana?
How about Christian Moore and Cam Smith?
The same people raving about Wetherholt are the same people who raved about Nick Madrigal’s bat-to-ball skills.
How many players that are 5’10” have had GREAT MLB careers?
The problem is not that they drafted Wetherholt, it is that they bet the entire draft on one player.
Cincinnati grabbed six players ranked in the Top 77. They took a portfolio approach.
Instead of betting the entire draft on one player, they could have seen who in the Top 15 would sign for slot or even under slot, giving them more chances at highly-rated players.
July 19, 2024 at 6:43 am #260836It is apples and oranges comparing StL and Cincinnati in this draft. The Reds had three picks in the top 71 but the Cardinals only had one in that same window. Part of that is because the Reds were second in the lottery and the Cards were seventh. They also had a competitive balance pick. Another reason is the Cards lost their second rounder and associated $2.225 MM of cap room.
The Reds gave over $9 million to their first rounder and have 50% more pool money to work with – $15.8 MM vs. $10.3 MM for the Cards.
We will see what Wetherholt gets, but losing the the second pick really hampered them.
July 19, 2024 at 6:55 am #260837IMO, all this talk about the Cardinals “wasting” their no. 7 draft position is unfounded. Wetherholt is a reasonable selection for that spot. No matter who they took, some would be concerned.
After the first round, it hardly mattered where the Cardinals picked. Last year, their second pick (third round) was no. 90. This year, it was no. 80. Not a huge difference.
