1td, you’re right on Betts. He’s not hard to like. In the DR-PR game earlier, the announcer was criticizing the CFer for making what he said was too risky a throw to 3B and allowed the batter to reach 2B. My immediate thought was the throw was a reasonable risk and Betts would’ve nailed the runner with his eyes closed.

Betts and Trout fuel a 2-run rally to give USA the lead again, 3-2 going to bottom 5.

Where are these challenges reviewed and decided? Probably somewhere like The Hague…

Yeah Euro, Betts has an arm out in RF that extends across the great divide. Just one feature of his all around talent. I also really like the way he conducts himself. First rate player all across the proverbial board.

I don’t know exactly why, but I was never crazy about Schwarber. I’m reasonably certain he’s probably a good guy and I’m perfectly aware that he possesses the sort of power that can help a team, but he always struck me as the type of player I’d pass on. Maybe it’s just because he wore that blue uniform for a while.

Re: Schwarber, glad Derosa took him out of LF. I like multi-skilled players. DH might be his long term fit.

Also, Smoltz just gave a good discussion of my 9th inning tiebreaker predicament posted earlier. His explanation made a lot of sense. You would never allow it to happen, just walk in the winning run to intentionally lose by one.

You wouldn’t think they’d set up a format that could possibly create that type of scenario. Seems silly to me. Next thing you know, they’ll be appointed to The Fed…

I think the USA just wrapped up advancing by going to the 9th ahead. LOL, Smoltz just started talking about it as I typed. USA cannot lose by more than one if Colombia gets men on base in the 9th, by just walking in the winning run. Smoltz just said “if you don’t care how it looks” haha.

Score going into the bottom of the 9th is 3-2 USA. Colombia needs to win 6-3. 5-3 win and they go home. Arenado just made a very nice play for the 1st out.

Its a bad idea to consider anything other than who wins and who loses. There are certain eternal laws of the baseball universe which define what baseball is and what only looks like baseball. It isn’t about margin of victory just like there is no panel of judges awarding points for artistic interpretation.

This is something MLB and the Mets did not want. Diaz recently received the largest contract for a reliever in MLB history.

I was looking at WBC player stats and see that Wainwright has tossed 4 IP so far, which is pretty typical it looks like. I wonder what sort of side work routine he has been following. There was some hope that he would round into form some by the time he gets back, but it seems just as possible he could be set back.

Given how Flaherty looked this past start, at least his pitching line, we could be in for a rough patch early. I guess this time of year starter performance issues are a lot better than health issues, so that’s a positive. Guys can be working on stuff too, so we can hope for that.

This is not WBC-related, but it plays off Bling’s last post.

Of course, there are some pitchers doing better than expected and others worse, but overall, Cardinals spring pitching has been very good. Despite Waino, Mikolas, Cabrera, Gallegos, etc. being away, they are fifth in MLB in team ERA at 3.92.

Starters are 11th at 4.26 and relievers are fourth at 3.74.

How or if that translates to the regular season is debatable, but it is certainly better to be doing well than to be getting shelled.

This is addressing the backlash, much of it from Mets fans because their closer is lost for the season due to his WBC celebration injury.

Nootbaar (whose team advanced to the final six) and Edman (who didn’t) are featured.

Baseball players want to play baseball. Shocker. Injuries happen and they’re unfortunate, but it’s not worth losing sleep over. Waino got hurt and we won the Series in 2011 and 100 games in 2015. It’s a funny game. The Mets are plenty talented to win even without Diaz.

I guess its easier to take if they get hurt actually playing baseball.

With Puerto Rico out to an early 4-1 lead vs. Mexico, it looks like Molina’s team may advance to the semis. Maybe Yadier knows what he’s doing and could come up for consideration as a future field manager for his old team. At any rate, it couldn’t help but to be interesting. I can picture Johnny giving the former Redbird catcher a friendly shin tap after bossing him around…

Mexico over PR. Romero was the winning pitcher and Gallegos saved it.

Yeah and Arozarena with the 8th inning play in the OF that probably choked off a PR comeback.

I’m looking forward to watching this evening’s USA/VEN game and hoping that the final is between USA/Japan. The Nootz should be amped up like a chunck of prompt critical fissile material for that one.

Betts comes around to score the first run and give the USA a 1-0 lead in the 1st. Man, he’s one heck of a player.

Ruiz keeps it from getting out of hand for VEN. He’s got some toxic material on his breaking ball.
