Hehe, I thought of the Ditka “Next” rant with the press. A lot of nothing answers followed by “Next.”

Haha!…Yeah, Ditka was always a must see whenever he took the podium. Also, it was never at all a surprise to me that Bobby Knight and TLR are good friends.
Good stuff 1td. Back before my son left the nest, about once year he and I would look at youtube to see rants by Ditka, Knight and a few others. You can get about 30 minutes of hard laughter from it. I remember TLR and Lasorda in a few those too, lol.

I plan on tuning in to the USA/Columbia game in about an hour. How many games can a team lose and still survive?

It depends on the records of the other four teams in your pool. Not guaranteed, but you can advance with two losses if there are not two other teams with fewer than two losses. Since these are five-team pools, advancing with two losses requires winning a tiebreaker with at least one other two-loss team.
In one of the pools all five teams went 2-2!
I see, Euro. I happened to see one group in which all 5 teams have a 2-2 W/L record, but two of the teams, Italy and Cuba, have an asterisk indicating that they qualify to advance to the next round. Must be something to do with who they played, I guess.
I’m surprised the Canada field manager’s wasting O’Neill’s glove by slotting him at DH. Seems like they’d want a GG OF’er to back up whoever’s pitching.
1td, I checked out the tiebreaker scenarios last night since I thought it might come into play. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head among the 2 or more teams that are tied. In the case of the 5-team deadlock, head-to-head doesn’t solve anything since they are all even. So, the second tiebreaker is the lowest quotient of the number of runs allowed divided by the number of outs recorded against the team or teams you are tied with. That one probably solved it.
In case there is still a tie, there a couple more tiebreakers and eventually they draw straws! The USA is probably in good shape even if they lose by 2 or fewer runs tonight.
I’ll be darned. If I’m understanding the tie breaker, it seems to be in a team’s best interest to continue to do everything possible to push runs across HP even when it seems like they hold an insurmountable lead.
The more I see of Mookie Betts, the closer I get to concluding that he might be the one player I’d take over any other OF’er in the NL. Except of course, the Nootz…

An interesting thought just occurred to me regarding the tiebreaker rules. It’s really a flaw in them. For example, the USA could go into the top of the 9th down 5-4. If they lose 5-4, then they advance over Colombia and Canada on the tiebreaker. So it’s in their best interest of advancing to intentionally not score in the top of the 9th — game over. The USA loses the game but advances to the next round.
If, however, the USA ties it or takes the lead, then Colombia gets to bat again. Then say Colombia comes back and wins 9-5 on a walk off grand slam, the USA would be finished and Columbia would advance.
