Here is the last three times through the rotation:
*Flaherty, Gant, CMart, Oviedo, Wainwright, KK
*Flaherty, Gant, CMart, Wainwright, KK, OviedoAs you know, Wainwright and KK threw on 4 days rest, instead of the usual 5 days. I’m guessing Oviedo wasn’t ready to pitch his turn again.

Gant threw on 4 days rest in the Flaherty slot, but tonight will be on 5 days rest.
The IL’s of Flaherty and KK are forcing the 5man rotation scheduling, unless they plug someone in.
Unfortunately it appears that those of us making the argument that Gant’s high WHIP was going to make his success unsustainable are being proven correct.
Yes, his success in his first 10 GS was unsustainable, he was that good.
Now he’s thrown 2 clunckers in a row, which speaks of his durability issues I previously mentioned.
For the season he’s been our SP2, but an IL stint wouldn’t surprise me. He had no idea where the pitch was going yesterday, bouncing dozens of pitches. He’ll be next to join our IL rotation.
For 2022, I think you can forget Mikolas, surely Wainwright has to retire, KK will be a question mark, Hudson will be a huge question mark, Gant is really better in the bullpen, do you really want to count on CMart?
Flaherty and 4 journeyman level or prospect type pitchers? Seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Can’t really trade for 3-4 SPs…..

KK is a FA-to-be this winter. He would pair well with Cabrera in the pen as lefties next season but this rotation needs him today.
Assuming healthy, which we know is a huge if, the 2022 rotation will have Flaherty, Mikolas, and Hudson with two spots up for grabs.
Who knows if Waino returns.
I don’t expect Kim to be back.

I think after the disaster this year, even this front office will recognize there needs to be outside acquisitions.
Any acquisitions would have to be free agents next off-season. There is really few players of value that we can afford to lose…. either from our MLB roster or prospects in the minors. We’ll be sorely needing the elite ones. Anyway, the Memphis roster is exactly packed with a lot of talent like in the past. Someone is asleep at the wheel. ZZZZZ
I think Mikolas is done.
Hudson may or may not be able to pitch.
So, real talk, next year you only have Flaherty for sure.
Nice piece to build around but to have 4 SP spots more or less open / in question is scary.
I agree that Mikolas’ future is murky but we have no reason at this point to think Hudson won’t make it back. Heck, he is talking about coming back this year to be in the pen.
About early March the talk will be about how we have 7 or 8 legit starters, just like this past winter.
Ny, agree on the spend $, not talent. They might find an expensive target whose salary is needing dumped at the deadline. The more $ they take on, the less talent sent, because they need help now.
Waino might as well end the suspense and sign on for 2022. We already know Yadi wants to come back for another year.
The Cards have been outscored 39-11 (that’s nearly 4 to 1)in the fifth inning of their games. The sixth and seventh are not as lopsided but they still favor the opposition. Any guesses for why that is?
Because our starters sputter after 4 innings and our middle relief is one of the worst units in MLB? That would be my guess. Waino is the only healthy starter we have that can reliably give you 6 or 7 innings. Kim can’t, CMart can’t, Gant can’t, and Oviedo can’t. And we only have three reliable bullpen guys but they usually pitch the 7th, 8th, and 9th. So it makes sense that we would get bombed in the middle innings.
I wouldn’t be opposed to having Woodford replacing CMart in the rotation. I also wouldn’t mind giving Angel Rondon a shot in the rotation with either Gant or Kim going to the pen.
Oviedo did go 7 innings last time out against Miami. He was unhittable with 14 K’s. Sounds like it can’t be true, but it is. It was no fluke. He was that good. Obvious question….. Can he be good with consistency?

Oviedo was good against Miami but it was Miami. The Marlins only seem to play well at Wrigley. I like Oviedo but I am not buying his stock until I get some more proof.
Having said that I would be in favor of running Oviedo, Woodford, and Rondon out there the rest of the year to see what we have. I don’t think they would be much worse than any of our other healthy starters besides Waino.
Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing Woodford get a real shot to get in the rotation. He’s not a top end guy but I think he’s got good enough stuff to be a backend guy. We are really hurting at middle relief though and he helps there. We have lots of question marks and what ifs. Maybe some young guys can come up next year but I don’t think you throw them in expecting them to carry us so yes front office needs to spend some money.

No disrespect to LeBlanc… but this is the type of player that the Cards will be spending money on. I’m sure they watch the waiver wire carefully.
