ParticipantSure hope they work Kim back into the rotation in September. Then re-sign him after the season.
August 25, 2021 at 8:17 am #170659I wasn’t too concerned about Flaherty until last night.
So, as it stands Flaherty, Mikolas, Hudson, and Kim are all health related question marks.
I don’t know exactly which of them will be affected next year but I guarantee that two of them will be.
The Cardinals need an immediate change of strength & conditioning coach and I really hope the FO assumes that they will probably need to replace and / or cover large chunks of 2022 for 2-3 of these guys.

Schwarber is a very limited player who should come in around the $10M mark despite his good 2021. I also think Kim-Waino-Yadi comes in a good bit lower than $27M for the three of them…more like $20Mish. Again, if you can trade Dejong and Mikolas for some salary relief, there is a lot that can be done to upgrade the team.I tend to estimate on the high side. As the true numbers come in, it’s easier to work down than up. I don’t think Yadi will get a pay cut and Wainwright and Kim have actually earned a bump.
I bet Scherzer is probably on the low side too.

ParticipantZTR – the question will probably be whether Libby, Oviedo, Thompson, and Woodford are talented enough (and ready) to provide the depth needed. And if they give Lester or Happ a one year deal for depth.
August 25, 2021 at 8:32 am #170662I don’t know what their 2022 plans will be but with the injury prone nature of the ENTIRE staff outside of Wainwright who will be 40 YEARS OLD next season (let that sink in) they’d be smart to have several layers of contingency plans.
Lester, Happ, and LeBlanc? Pffft – if that’s the safety net then 2022 will be a repeat of 2021.
The young guns may or may not be ready for prime time – maybe one of them?
The 2022 pitching staff looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
August 25, 2021 at 9:14 am #170666gscott, I wonder if Cots does that because the buyout happens shortly after the season ends. Then it could be included in the previous year’s payroll. As an example, maybe Carpenter’s $2 million buyout gets added to the 2021 payroll rather than the 2022 payroll because it happens right after the 2021 season ends and no income will be earned in the 2022 year by Carpenter.
That is probably correct. It never seems to carry over to the following year.
August 25, 2021 at 9:16 am #170668I also think Kim-Waino-Yadi comes in a good bit lower than $27M for the three of them…more like $20Mish.
Yadi has already signed for $10. I suspect Waino will get very close to that. Kim can probably get $4 or $5. $25M for the three of them could happen.
August 25, 2021 at 11:20 am #170687The #stlcards placed right-handed starting pitcher Jack Flaherty on the 10-day injured list. His roster replacement is right-handed reliever Junior Fernandez, but who will replace the ace in the starting rotation? (free) https://t.co/3Jh0r14FR4 pic.twitter.com/rrcXRTkGPJ

August 25, 2021 at 12:03 pm #170689With Flaherty’s mounting injury concerns, and the low attendance figures throughout MLB, it’s starting to look like Flaherty made a mistake when he rejected the Cardinals’ offer to buy out his arbitration years last offseason. As I understand it, he rejected their offer based on his personal principle that the organization should pay him the absolute max which could only be gotten through free agency.
I’m starting to think that Flaherty is a head case, not that much different than CMart. People tend to forget, and Flaherty, himself, tends to forget that he has only been really good for three months, and that was two years ago.

stlcard25ParticipantFrankly, that’s an absurd take, mudville. I’m not sure what the threshold for “really good” is for you, but Flaherty has met every reasonable person’s standard in all of his years but the shortened 2020 year. His 3.18 ERA since he began 2018 in the rotation is 9th among pitchers with 400 IP over that span. His 2.68 ERA this year before last night was actually better than his “really good” 2019.
I realize that you are intensely pro ownership, but your take was really bad. Flaherty is a top flight starter, any way you cut it.
August 25, 2021 at 1:50 pm #170716Flaherty still has time to earn a big contract but I think the Cardinals are being wise going year to year.
August 25, 2021 at 3:58 pm #170755I don’t see myself as ‘intensely pro ownership’ although I do find myself defending ownership at times when it is being blamed and attacked, usually for being wealthy, but for other things as well. I think a top of rotation pitcher should be a leader, and I think he should be reliable and consistent. I just don’t see Flaherty as that kind of player.

ParticipantFlaherty is a product of the Harvard-Westlake High School baseball factory. North Hollywood, California.
He’d probably like to pitch for the Dodgers, Angels, or Padres. Close to his family and friends. Which he probably will when he enters free agency.August 27, 2021 at 4:27 pm #170900Flaherty only good for 3 months? Need a fact check on that. After review I call bs on that one..
August 27, 2021 at 4:43 pm #170903Needless to say, he won’t have the chance to consider a multi-year deal this winter. I wonder who will win the arb case this time.
August 27, 2021 at 4:44 pm #170904Fans often (and media sometimes) embrace the story line of how players supposedly want to sign with their hometown team because of family and friends. But in reality, there is almost never any substance actually reported and it almost never happens.
Before Max, Buehrle was a textbook case for the Cardinals for multiple years, but there are countless such examples across all MLB teams.
August 27, 2021 at 5:24 pm #170908bccran
ParticipantGotta take each player case by case re where they want to play. I’ve seen a lot of Southern California natives who want to get back close the the warm, sunny weather, the beaches, etc.
August 27, 2021 at 11:38 pm #170956Who wouldn’t love to know what the Cardinals’ brass thinks about Reyes future. Before his run on injuries, he was considered a sure top of rotation guy. Could he still be that guy? If they move him to the rotation, it definitely changes what they would want to do in the coming offseason. On the one hand, he’s been a successful closer, so maybe it’s better to leave it at that. On the other hand, IMHO, it almost seems like a waste to have a pitcher with 3 or 4 plus pitches being used as a reliever, even if that reliever is an elite closer.

MrperkinsParticipantCall me crazy but I would be willing to offer Happ at 1/7mm for next year.
August 28, 2021 at 7:17 am #170959Not crazy Mrperkins. We will need to sign at least two MLB proven starters who can be counted on to go 5+ innings every 5 days. Since I think ownership will shy away from big contracts this winter a guy like Happ who could be expected to do one year is the thing. Depending on what happens with Flaherty, Mikolos and Wainwright, and also Hudson, we may need to sign 4 or 5. It would be good to have Kim lined up 6th as a swing man to start the season. Hopefully that could hold us until somebody emerges to show some dominance in AAA. I know people are writing in Hudson in ink, but the Flaherty thing shows how reckless it would be to count on an injury return with no plan B. I think if they try Reyes as a starter next year he would not last until opening day, so there would need to be a plan B there too. And a plan C.
August 28, 2021 at 7:22 am #170960In other words, our 2022 rotation outlook is hideous.

August 28, 2021 at 8:23 am #170965Adam Wainwright's career:
A 3.36 ERA in 418 games.
Four top-three finishes in the Cy Young Award voting.
43.5 WAR, which is in the same neighborhood as Dizzy Dean, Herb Pennock and Lefty Gomez, all Hall of Famers. https://t.co/YcXHRMc52U— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) August 28, 2021
