so let’s say you load up to about 8 on experienced major league pitchers. Will you stay within budget?

We don’t need 8 Jacob Degrom’s. We just need guys to eat innings and give us quality starts. They don’t all have to be expensive, even though we have a lot of money coming off the books.

And where would you put all of them if they’re all healthy, experienced, successful major league starters aren’t going to want to pitch out of the bullpen or be at AAA.

Again, I would envision a combination of high end starters with some back end innings eaters. If all 8 were perfectly healthy, which is HIGHLY doubtful, then a couple could slide to the bullpen. That would be a wonderful problem to have. When is the last season we didn’t have a starter out with a prolonged injury?

Most starters won’t come to your team if there’s a chance you’re going to put them into the bullpen.

Waino, flaherty, Hudson, new mid rotation inning eater, new mid/back of rotation innings eater.

If Mikolos can pitch, if Kim comes back, rotation depth working out of the pen.

    That is doable. Not complicated.

What are you paying for those 2 pitchers? How does that fit into your budget when you had so much time with no fans or limited fans?

So far we have $78M committed for 2022, plus some for arbitration. Considering that this year’s payroll was between $145M and $165M, depending on how you allocate the Arenado contract, I think we can afford a pitcher or two. We should have between $60M-$80M to spend including arbitration.

I understand the Cardinals’ revenue has taken a hit, but so has everyone else’s. Where are they going to get the money to pay 2019 prices?

Everyone’s attendance has been hit. While I don’t have the statistics, the Cardinals probably are still bringing in more fans than a lot of the teams.

gscottar – I was answering those who are blaming the Cardinals for not signing several middle of the rotation starters during this season to backfill for the injuries. I agree with you 100% abo8ut next season. I’m hoping for St. Louis native. Scherzer

They have a nice chunk of change to deal with as Fowler,
Carpenter, Martinez, and Miller come of the payroll.

They can do a 26man roster for 127mil that includes Yadi and Adam renewing at the same rate, KK at 2/10 and leblanc at 2/4mil.

Or a 40man for 135mil (20mil in arbs). Thats all in house with carp, a. Miller, cmart, happ, Lester, mcfarland and garcia all gone.

I don’t expect them to exceed 150mil opening day payroll.

It would be sensible for the F.O. to look at how the revenue of contending teams looks at season’s end compared to the last couple years before 2020. That might give an indication how much the Cards’ revenue is affected by shitty play vs other factors.

Bling, I don’t think they are concerned with other teams books. So far their concerns still seem to include making up for their 2020 bottom line.

We’ll know that has changed when the player budget gets back to the 2019 level. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong this winter.

    jj –
I hope they go back to their normal payroll level. I think they know they need to improve the team significantly. Thanks

As far as comments regarding ‘with all the pitchers / players they have; who do you take off the 40-man roster?’

That is THE job the FO has to do. Every team has a 40 man roster and all or almost all will have 40 players on it.

They get paid to read the tea leaves and make personnel decisions based on the current and future needs of the organization across all levels.

Just like a player who fails to produce getting replaced – so too with the FO. These guys aren’t dummies, they clearly see what has happened – my question is: do they understand WHY it happened and how will they adjust going forward?

I will be interested to see who comes off the 40-man or goes on the 60-day IL when our starting pitchers start coming back off the 60-day, beginning tomorrow! Can Quezada be put on the 60-day even though he is in the minors? They added him to the minor league 60-day IL today. Not sure how that works!

It has to be remembered in 2022 that many of our rookies, while having great promise, will be subject to rookie slumps. Gorman, Yepez, and Burleson will be vulnerable to struggles. But at least we should see the experiences of Carlson and Nootbaar’s season in 2021, could yield major improvements next year.

I agree with those who think the org will avoid major long term contracts this winter, due to revenue uncertainty, and are likely to prioritize a pitcher over a bat. You never know, but I expect to build next year’s lineup out of what is in the system now.

What to do about DeJong and his contract is a thing. With proven talent being thin, and probably having Bader and his nerf noodle bat, we need to get away from having bench guys who can’t hit taking up space, especially since we will likely be carrying a DH.

You really have to hand it to the Mets in beating us to the punch. When I saw Toronto put Brad Hand on waivers the other day, I figured Mo would pounce.
