When you are 12th of 15 NL teams in hits, 13th in OBP and dead last in walks you are not getting on base enough. But we also, surprisingly, have struck out the fewest times in the N.L. so we are putting the ball in play. But we are also dead last in BABIP. Bad luck? Are we hitting it to them too much? Maybe they know where we are likely to hit it and position a guy there. It does not strike me as a problem to be solved by bringing in a new guy or two, nor by shuffling the lineup. Not that we shouldn’t bring in a guy or two, but that same unsightly pattern would persist.
The idea that they know where we will hit it and position accordingly takes a hit when you consider Carp has one of the better BABIPs on the team at .299, above league average.
I agree with gscottar. I think the FO will be under pressure to make a splash this off-season and may try multiple upgrades. Even though there will be money available to do it, it’s going to be tricky to fit it all together. In an ideal world, they’d find a big bat and a big name pitcher and really go for it. I’m not sure that will actually happen, but it’d be nice.
One guy we liked last year that would be nice to go after would be Joc Pederson, assuming he becomes a free agent again. He hasn’t really done much to change his narrative this year…he’d actually be a pretty good 4th OF as a lefty with some pop. I still like Conforto if they are going to upgrade the OF for real, but if they can pluck a big SS to make Dejong the 2B until Gorman is ready, I’m ok with that. Then they could focus on finding a SS or 2B and shifting Dejong to a utility IF role, resigning Yadi and figuring out what to do with the rotation.
Even if jobs are on the line, ownerships decision on the payroll budget for 2022 will determine if we get more has-beens or all-stars. Those employees whose jobs may be on the line are spending other peoples money, when it’s allowed.
I expect payroll to fall again (2022).
I’m not sure what I hope they do this winter. They brought in Goldy and Arenado and we are worse than before.
They need to go after a Minf and a lefthanded bat with some pop.
I’m sorry Tommy Edman is not the solution to all our problems.
I guess I hope they focus on the rotation as the priority.
Then a shortstop who can field and hit adequately. We can’t figure on a .200 hitter as an everyday player.
Knizner looks like a .200 hitter to me as well, and not knowing how Herrera will look as he comes along, we need to have a plan B even if Yadi comes back. If he went down early 2022, then what? We should address that this winter.
Those are things i think it would be FO malpractice to not address.
Knizner hasn’t been given almost no opportunity to show anything. Hitting was to be his strong point with the defense a little behind. So no doubt he struggles due to lack of pt.
I guess you can go get a starter but with Mikolas, Jack, Dakota and possibly Waino for a return with Oviedo in your back pocket. Kim I don’t think wants to be here due covid and being away from his family but a 2 year deal might get him thinking. It may be a low grade move. I don’t think you can go big with it if you want a top 4-5 minf as a need as well and the bullpen could use an add or 2 and a lefty bat. Joc isn’t coming here because he wants run. That’s the reason he went to Chicago.
That’s the issue! We have more needs than people want to admit if we want the division in 2020.
Then again this is all moot if the cba can’t get worked out. I think were in for a work stoppage.
85 you kind of emphasize my point about the rotation. If what there is to talk about is 3 guys trying to come back from injuries and a guy who will be 40, then you have a serious problem. Backed by a guy who was ineffective and a guy who can give you 4 or 5 innings of .500 ball, if he is here at all. And some hopefuls, none of whom have shown any dominance in AAA this year. That is as bleak as it gets.
Liberatore, Oviedo, Thompson, and Rondon
are all good prospects. They’ll back up an experienced rotation of Flaherty, Hudson, Kim, Mikolas, and Reyes next season.
Should be fine.I won’t be sold on Mikolas until I see him pitch effectively from April through the asb.
Cards absolutely need to add one if not two reliable starting arms for 2022 to the list above.

Answer: Very poorly. Three of the five in the rotation are recent castoffs as are three of the relievers. That makes six pitching holes that had to be filled in-season.
They cannot repeat the poor planning again for 2022.
ZTR – If you get another starter, and Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, Kim, Reyes, and Wainwright are all healthy and pitching well at ST, what do you do with him?
It may be more complicated than it seems, blingboy. Let’s say you line up 6 good starters for 2022 – Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, Kim, Reyes, and Waino. If you sign a 7th, where would you slot him, if all of the first 6 have good off seasons, and everything is working out at ST? You can’t just stack pitcher upon pitcher upon pitcher. During the season, if you have a starter or two go down, you promote guys from
Memphis who have shown they’re ready or you work a trade.
But you can’t just sign and line up 7-8 experienced and successful major league starters to create depth. At least that’s my opinion.Reyes is an unproven major league starter who could be kept in the ‘pen. Kim and Mikolas could both be moved to the ‘pen if we could get a proven, good starter. At least at that point, we won’t be short on quality starters. Oviedo, Thompson, Liberatore and Rondon are all unproven in the majors, too.
Of course, we could do like we did with the OF and throw the unproven youngsters out there to learn on the job. Although some people didn’t like that idea.
Bling, remember that some of the posts were written prior to trading Gomber. I think having him as a replacement starter would have helped a lot. When a team is down 2 of it’s expected starters for most of the season, weaknesses will show up.
I would have no problem going to ST with 7 proven starters. History tells us that the chances of all 7 making it to opening day unscathed are slim. Even if that happens you could put two of them in the pen temporarily because you know the injuries are coming.
I am all for promoting from within but only if the player is ready. I am tired of St. Louis being a developmental team. Teams like Pittsburgh and Miami can do that but not St. Louis. Let’s keep our younger pitchers in Memphis to develop instead of trying to develop at the big league level.
I have KK as SP6 in the pen, in case Mikolas is a no show.
LeBlanc as SP7, giving Shildt his 3 lefties in the pen with Cabrera, but backup to the rotation too.
Both are FA’s, as is Happ and others, but that would be the framework. I like relievers who can face both rh and lhb’s, starters in the pen, and it helps with the 3 batter rule.
The recent influx of older experienced pitchers coming in seems to be to get to the end of this season without losing every game. 2022 rotatation seems like its gonna be more of the same. Flaherty is rushing to get back which may not be a great idea. Mikolas will also be along too. From what I’ve read AAA pitching help is really 2 years away. Next year may be sparse too. Hence the push to resign Waino. Outfields set but honestly Kinzner does need more playing time so we can see what his bats like. Personally I would be gunshy to give Yadi an extended huge money contract like they have done in the past. Hes a great rbi guy but we all know about his running. If we really want to be good. And be serious about it then low batting average guys will have to be replaced. With ineffective pitching we will not be able to win with both.So to rise above average some of it will have to change. I’m ok with how they are now actually. Just depends on how bad you want it and how much change you’ll accept I guess.
Instead of making the same mistake again , we should get two starters who pitched decently and weren’t hurt this year. Besides that we would hopefully have Wainwright, Flaherty. Hudson. If not one of them, Mikolos or Kim, both or either of whom could work out of the pen unless needed. Oviedo could finslly do a season in AAA since he sucked in MLB. Guys looking so so in AAA could try again.
Mikolas – can’t count him in until proven otherwise.
Kim – do we control him with an option year? If not why assume he will be here.
Hudson – coming back from tjs. What if he’s not the same pitcher?
Wainwright – he’s 40. How long can he keep this up and do you bet the season on him?
I think it’s a really easy decision to add a couple of reliable starting arms. If everyone stays healthy and pitches well then we have a trade piece.
Restating a case, sorry. If you have 6 healthy starters who have experienced good years, have good off seasons throwing, and are all set and ready to go, where are you going to put starter number 7 and starter number 8? And what do you do with Oviedo, Liberatore, and Thompson if they’re pitching beautifully in Memphis during the season. Plus, you have holes to fill offensively with the money you have available.
If we ever have too many quality starters in St. Louis and more on the way in Memphis that sounds like a wonderful problem to have.
