    Look how high Soderstrom is.

I think the safest bet is a college righty, most likely being Cole Wilcox or Cade Cavelli it looks like. I think the dark horse is Nick Loftin SS/Baylor. I’ve only seen him go in one draft, but it’s a sneaky good pick for the Cards. He seems like a guy that is a good bet to be a solid SS with a possibility to develop into more. I still am holding out hope that Robert Hassell slides, but that’s very unlikely.

    yeah GC, #10 for Soderstrom?

and anyone think Cavalli is still there at 21?

I think after the first 4 or 5 it could go a lot of different ways. It has been a while since the scouts have seen the players play and that could cause chaos. I do expect us to take a college pitcher but I could see Howard or Soderstrom too. I have actually warmed to Soderstrom recently…he is a big, athletic LH hitter that can play corner OF, 1B, 3B in addition to catcher. His dad was a major leaguer, Steve Soderstrom. Here is more on him:Soderstrom is an athletic, left-handed hitting catcher whose bat is ahead of his defense. At the plate, he’s really polished with a solid overall approach and makes the kind of loud contact that makes people sit up and take notice when he’s taking batting practice. He’s a hitter first, but he will get to his power. He might be a tick above average as a runner, especially for a catcher, and has shown he has the athleticism to play third and even the outfield.

you know what, GC? me too.
he doesn’t sound like as bad an idea as a week ago. 🙂

still think if Howard doesn’t fall to 21 it’ll be a college pitcher.
lot of good ones out there.
one that isn’t mentioned much is Chris McMahon.
lot of movement on his fastball if you watch youtube vids.

How would you rank these possibles at #21?

    Chris McMahon
    Cade Cavelli
    Cole Wilcox
    Garrett Crochet
    Carmen Mlodzinski
    Bryan Jarvis
    Bobby Miller
    Tanner Burns

In looking at videos, 2 stand out as men among boys. Fast trackers.

I am more interested in how Randy Flores ranks them. No poster knows enough to make an educated decision. How many on this list have you seen pitch in person? I have seen 4 but not the others and that is not good enough to make a decision.

You’re right, GameCard. But as a former #1 starting pitcher at a D-1 University I can look at videos, study closely their mechanics, form an opinion, and decide which ones I favor. Of course it’s just an opinion. But 2 really do stick out.
Can’t wait for tomorrow and Thursday.

The problem with video is you don’t know when it was taken and since there haven’t been many games recently it could be old. Good college pitching coaches can change and improve mechanics. Skylar Meade at Carolina is excellent and can help a pitcher get better.

Actually, you can tell a lot about them by their arm slot, how they hide the ball, their presence on the mound, and their effort. Plus how the batters are reacting. These videos are the ones in the MLB pre draft scouting reports, so I would assume they’re fairly recent.

    So who are the two…?

Another interesting exercise is to compare them to other Cardinal system starters both in the past and present. The answer to your question, 26, is Crochet and Mlodzinski. Crochet is a Liberatore clone and Mlodzinski could double for Lance Lynn. They’re head and shoulders above the others who may be available at #21.

Mlodzinski likely will be there at 21.
    Crochett very, very doubtful.
Someone will snarf him up long b4 21.

You’re right, DM. Unless he falls like a Delvin Perez, Dakota Hudson, Nolan Gorman, etc.

brand new mock. thanks to the poster on another board that I stole it from.

Here’s a mock from Sports Info Solutions (formerly Baseball Info Solutions) done by their staff as a group, through the end of round 2 and the comp picks.

    Cardinals picks:
21 – Ed Howard, SS (HS)
54 – Dax Fulton, LHP (HS)
63 – Tommy Mace, RHP, University of Florida
    70 – Drew Bowser, SS/3B (HS, Harvard-Westlake)

3 out of 4 are high schoolers? I seriously doubt it.

i have a serious question for whoever knows the answer (maybe even Brian himself) 🙂

for those, mostly high schoolers, who have a dollar figure in mind, below which they will not sign……
WHEN DOES THE DRAFTING CLUB FIND OUT THAT DOLLAR FIGURE IS?
BEFORE he is selected? hopefully, or else teams would be shy on even selecting in the first place.

I assume they have a ballpark idea (pun intended) and not flying totally in the dark, so to speak. Surprises are not welcome !

hopefully you can figure out my question, though maybe not stated very clearly.

edit: I didn’t mean to sound like Brian MIGHT know the answer. No doubt he does.

    – I don’t think you ever truly know until you get into the negotiations. But that is the one thing clubs are allowed to do this year is contact eligible draftees and find out what it would take to sign them. So, they should have a pretty strong indication of what it will take, this year more than most years.

For the most part, a scout’s job is to get close enough to the players to know their circumstances. It will be easier with only 5 Rds. Most college players & the top HS ones have a dollar amount…many really good players won’t get drafted tomorrow because of those demands. The draft is not the best 160 players…signability is important.
