There is a lot of promise and depth from 20 on. A lot of young, unproven guys with star (or bust for that matter) potential.
36. Delvin Perez – Perez still has top twenty talent with little production to show for it. Probably not going to develop power in the Francisco Lindor mold, but still a great piece to develop.
37. Junior Fernandez – I think he comes back strong from the injury over the last year or so. He still has the stuff to start and is young enough to continue to develop. Should be interesting with a full off season to buildup how he looks in AA.
38. Scott Hurst – If he can stay healthy I for see him moving up rapidly as he is another of the many CF type outfielders in the system with a good hit tool and great arm. Again, all rides on his health.
39. Alvaro Seijas – He is pretty much tied to Johan Oviedo for me. Both struggled at Peoria early with a rebound in the second half. Said to have a high spin rate fastball with late movement. Some definite potential to end up in the bullpen, but could become a Helsley type starter in the system as early as next year. Should thrive at PB at a young age. Looking forward to seeing Seijas and Oviedo in the pitcher friendly FSL.
40. Giovanny Gallegos – Probably should have had him rated higher as he will likely be a contributor to the big league bullpen this year. I guess my rankings are a little more biased against relievers than I had hoped.
I’m having a hard time understanding the trade bias that’s been prevalent here. Just because we acquired them from other teams does not make them great or even good for that matter. Yes, I trust our scouting staff, just not our President of Baseball Operations. Anyway, here are my picks;
36. Junior Fernandez – Surely he still has that arm.
37. Justin Toerner – How do you bat over .300 and end your season in PB in your first season and not get voted higher than a Connor Capel.
38. Joerlin De Los Santos – .359ba, .459obp, 30 stolen bases = top prospect
39. Scott Hurst – He hasn’t stopped hitting.
40. Jake Walsh – What a leap in production as he white-walshed (it’s a pun folks) the competition.

38-Joerlin De Los Santos. Good hitter in the DSL, good speed, and should get a shot in the states this year at 18 I’d think
39-Junior Fernandez. Now’s the time to look at some guys who dropped a lot in the past year. Mr Fernandez was injured and came back as a reliever. Who knows if he’s going to get a chance as a starter again, but it seems unlikely. He may be a Rule 5 casualty this year.
40-Delvin Perez. The bat is in need of a boost, but the glove plays. I think he ends up in the majors somewhere eventually, if only as a Pete Kozma type defensive wizard. I’d love to see him become more like a Kolten Wong of the SS position though, which may be his best case scenario at this point.My curiosity was piqued by the Kozma-Perez comp, so I looked them up. Though both were high school draftees, Kozma was 19 and Perez just 17.
Kozma spent just his first partial season in short-season ball and OPSed .701 (mostly JC). His OPS generally dropped as he moved closer to MLB.
In his three years in short-season ball, Perez’ OPS was .745 (GCL) then .585 (JC/GCL) and .573 (SC).

Somewhat off topic; CariocaCardinal or Robert Reed, the Cardinal transaction site says we signed Pitchers Teinys Portillo, Henry Gomez, Victor Herrera; catchers Juan Sanchez & Diego Velasquez; plus ss Bryan Matute, but they’re not listed on Brian’s roster matrix. Is that because they’re 16 year old signs and do either of you know anything about these guys?
