JJ, Bernie also cited Milwaukee as a team who has won consistently with less payroll than the Cardinals. And they draw well. No Burnes, No Woodruff, No Counsell, Yelich hurt…..they just keep winning. They are doing something right.
September 4, 2024 at 1:48 pm #266570It clearly wasn’t the Brewers manager.
September 4, 2024 at 1:49 pm #266571
stlcard25ParticipantLast year was most certainly a debacle. This year, you can definitely argue that the team has overperformed where they should be, thanks to a much better bullpen.
September 4, 2024 at 1:50 pm #266572If the Cardinals organization want to hold Tampa Bay up as a model to emulate, maybe someone should point out their fans in the stands…
I think the comparison was about doing more with less. Consistently having winning seasons on half of the payroll expense.
September 4, 2024 at 1:51 pm #266573It clearly wasn’t the Brewers manager.
Maybe not but he has his new team ahead of us in the standings also.
September 4, 2024 at 1:57 pm #266575One more thing tagging on to my “get young pitching” goal. I would not be trading away athletic players. The Cardinal announcers have touted in recent weeks about how athletic the Brewers are.
Case in point with our club – early in the season I mentioned I would have been okay trading Burleson for Kittredge, but not Palacios. At a glance it looks like we made the right choice. Burly is at a 111 OPS+, and Palacios is at 98.
But a closer look and we see Palacios is at 2.0 WAR and Burly at 1.5. Palacios is the better player due to being far more athletic and versatile on defense and better on the bases. And the gap is even wider than it looks as Burly has well over 200 more at bats than Richie.
Somehow management has to see this stuff better.

ParticipantIMHO the main problem is not spending more money. It’s the development of players in the system. They just don’t seem to be developing the right way. Maybe we should take a strong look and Gary LaRocque and the managers and coaches under him at all levels. What are their qualifications? What kind of successes are on their resumes? No one can answer that better than Brian. Why did Saggese fall off so much this year? Why was Thompson clobbered yesterday? Why was Graceffo clobbered his last start? Why has Davis had such a slow start? Why did all the starters that we picked up last July go down? Why aren’t Baez and Cho progressing better? Etc. Etc. Etc.
September 4, 2024 at 2:25 pm #266577I saw a segment on MLB.com a few days ago. The Cardinals were criticized for pushing Walker so hard to hit fewer ground balls. There may be a hint about some our hitting woes. As I understood it the conflict between Shildt and Jeff Albert is that Albert wanted the hitters to pull most everything and get more loft in their swings. Shildt disagreed and got fired. Previously the Budda Bedansky was let go for disagreeing with Albert.
Apparently the Cardinals want to be a home run team in a pitchers ball park.
We have a young player trying to hit low outside pitches in the air. He only set a Cardinal rookie record for hits in consective games to start his career which has now turned to ashes.
We have Aranado chasing a lot of pitches out of the zone and while he hits some of them he also misses a lot in crucial situations.
And I wonder if the statistics people are making up the lineup every day.
How is that for conspiracy theorys.September 4, 2024 at 3:49 pm #266580Counsel may be the magic man. Sometimes it takes a couple of years for things to spin down (see: StL organization). If the Brewers are still kicking our teeth in in 2026 we can rule out the Counsel effect.
September 4, 2024 at 3:57 pm #266582Yes, last season was a debacle but the poster was referring to this season.
September 5, 2024 at 5:29 am #266628I don’t get exited about small sample sizes of production. And it’s not my policy to harass the manager and his decisions nonstop. Even if it is Oily. There’s plenty of othérs to fill that role. But all things considered, it’s time to find a way to get Luken Baker more at bats. Playing Fermine with Walker and Baker sitting is head scratching. I realize they play different positions, but the point is shuffling the lineup so they get at bats. Fermine is useless.
September 5, 2024 at 5:55 am #266632Maybe they are scared off Baker because all the boppers fizzle.
September 5, 2024 at 6:56 am #266636You have a point Bling. But Baker appears to have decent pitch recognion. It gives me hope.
September 5, 2024 at 8:45 am #266643Baker has always been thoroughly blocked. There is the opportunity to unblock him this winter. But will they?
September 5, 2024 at 9:10 am #266645That’s the question of the day Bling. Bill has 3 choices. Keep it the same, rebuild, or spend to make it competitive. If he keeps it the same, he further alienates the fanbase. But that’s where my bet is. We know he won’t spend to make it competitive.
September 5, 2024 at 9:14 am #266647
jj-cf-stlParticipantPlenty if candidates for 1B. Goldy, Contreras, Herrera, Burleson, Donny. Probably easier to list those that shouldn’t be at 1B.
Bill is broke too, which should help Baker, but if they want Goldy back on a Lance Lynn deal, that may happen too.
September 5, 2024 at 9:40 am #266650RBK
ParticipantThey have a lot of options at 1B. Unfortunately, once you factor in the positional adjustment, it’s hard to imagine any of them other than maybe Contreras rising to the level of a solid starter (2-3 WAR). But they have that same problem all over the roster, so it’s pretty much par for the course.

Why aren’t Baez and Cho progressing better? Etc. Etc. Etc.Baez is still younger than Wetherholt by about 9 months and is thoroughly out-hitting him in A ball right now. I don’t understand giving up on guys so quickly.

Might help if he hedges his bets like he did with Gorman and Walker. Lol
I see payroll about the same or maybe a little less.
September 5, 2024 at 2:09 pm #266666The Cardinals are more or less is a rebuild now, it seems. It’s definitely a transition period as they get used to not having Molina and Wainwright around. I guess if they were going to really call it a rebuild, they would have to let Goldschmidt walk, and trade Arenado, Contreras, and Helsley. Losing Helsley would probably cause the most damage.
September 5, 2024 at 3:24 pm #266669
jj-cf-stlParticipantArenado doesn’t want to leave one rebuild and come to another. Maybe that was part of our sales pitch, that and another seasons salary tacked on the end.
Come on over Nolan. We never rebuild, even if we should. 😉September 5, 2024 at 5:21 pm #266670I guess Bernie is drunk again. Calls Baker a left handed slugger who was brought up to give the Cardinals power against right handed pitching.
September 5, 2024 at 5:43 pm #266671At least he didn’t call Baker, “Dusty”…
September 5, 2024 at 5:50 pm #266672I don’t understand giving up on guys so quickly.
I had to go back and make sure you were indeed talking about Baez. Its his 4th year in the system and 3rd year in A ball. He had close to a 40% K rate in high A. He’s back in low A and finally hitting over a small sample and still pulling a 25% K rate. If somebody wants to give up on a guy, Baez works.
September 5, 2024 at 5:53 pm #266673You always have a clever angle Dom. You should be a sit-com writer.
