To Brian’s point, less than two weeks ago Burleson’s OPS was .676. We’re talking about a whopping 39 PAs (and 10 games) since then. This is head-of-pin sample size analysis going on here. Let’s wait and see. E.g., he has a .406 BABIP during this 39 PA stretch, does anyone think that’s going to persist the rest of the year?

Whatever the Cardinals did to Walker over the winter and spring has him really messed up. Nothing says they will be able to fix it. At least he is slapping singles off minor league pitching.

RBK I’m not a total metrics and anylitics geek. I like watching the guys actually play. But I dabble. That BABIP stuff has merit when you are deciding if a guy is in a slump or if a guy is just hot.

To be clear, there’s no doubt he’s hitting the ball well during this 10 game stretch–my point is simply that that level of batted ball production isn’t likely to persist over larger samples, even with relatively good luck. And given that he doesn’t walk much, even during this hot streak his OBP is just 15 pts higher than his BABIP.

Doesn’t mean he won’t go on to have a good season, just that 10 games and 39 PAs are an incredibly small sample size in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, he’s 14 for his last 33. I’d have to guess he’ll drop off a little…Haha! At any rate he’s beginning to establish himself as a Big League hitter. For a while it looked as though he may be shipped out to TN. So, good for him and good for our friend, Shady…Haha!

Exactly RBK- Just ask yourself if that BABIP # is sustainable. Or if a guy is going bad,is it unreasonably low. As far as Burleson, of course his BABIP is high right now and inevitably will come down. But I’ve always liked his bat to ball skills. That’s the liking to watch the guy play thing I was talking about. Burleson periphial numbers have all improved because he’s being more selective at what he swings at. Simple as that. What I didn’t like was anything else having to do with baseball and Burleson. But he’s shown enough improvement to justify seeing him in left field sometimes. Not all the time.

The only thing missing is the TB’s. I’d like to see more OF’ers breaking towards the wall when he connects.

KCB, interestingly a lot his plate discipline metrics aren’t all that different this year, he’s just had better batted ball results. His plate discipline peripherals are in-line with his prior history:

    Metric/2024/(prior yrs)
    BB%: 4.3% (7.0%)
    O-swing%: 37.6% (34.7%)
    P/PA: 3.55 (3.57)

RBK I don’t think he is ever going to walk a lot. Neither will he K a lot. When I say he’s been more selective, maybe I really should have said smarter. Adjusting to counts and game situations. Knowing where he’s being positioned to hit it. I haven’t looked it up but I think he’s finally seeing more pitches per ab. Like Mike Shannon used to say-hit where they ain’t.

bccran, I hope you are right. Because that would probably put Walker at an All Start caliber hitter. I just hope Walker can be as good of an MLB hitter at 25 as Burleson currently is. Burleson was a pretty dominant hitter at AAA his last season there. Walker is no where close at AAA now to where Burleson was then at AAA.

Gee Shady…I guess I’d be wasting my breath pointing out that the just turned 22 Walker has a career .752 OPS & 105 OPS+ while your beloved Burly has a career .701 OPS and 94 OPS+.

You are right Albert he toe it up his last year in AAA. But he has to maintain his current ML #’s to keep him in the everyday. And I mean what we’ve seen the last few weeks. Otherwise he’s just a bench guy.

It might be time to go Burleson 3, Goldschmidt 4 and Arenado 5 against RHP.

    Or not.

    They’re winning. Leave it alone.

I don’t think shuffling the lineup is going to “fix the Cardinals”.

Right now Burly, Noot, Arenado, Donovan, Herrera and Winn should be in there most every day. Goldy, Sinai and Carlson can mix and match here and there. The other guys are there for an occasional appearance here or there, or emergency depth.

If Walker was progressing as hoped from last year, similar to how Winn is maturing, we would be looking pretty good.

BOCfan, so you finally admit Burleson at least belongs in the lineup? lol

Goldy has an OPS of .825 in the last two weeks. He should probably be in the lineup.

Arenado has an OPS of .636 in the last two weeks.

Burleson has hit well the past 3 weeks.

I also wish Mo would stop trying to stubbornly win the Arozarena trade and just do what is best for Libby and the Cardinals which is to let him pitch out of the bullpen. He seems so much more comfortable out of the pen.

Nado at 98 OPS+, Goldy at 74. But we can cherry pick numbers all day – fact is Goldy should be in there but can DH a little easier than Nolan due to having better players available to play first. Hence he can switch out with Burly at first and maybe Herrera DH, that sort of thing. And at 37 should probably sit maybe a day a month more than NA.

For all the whiners and complainers on here do realize only 9 teams (4 NL) have lost fewer games than the Cardinals?

It just says there’s been a lot of parity or mediocre baseball to this point in the season. I’ll let y’all pick which camp you want to reside in.

Our old friend Edmundo Sosa has been the Phillies full time shortstop since Turner went down at the beginning of May. His line this season .319/,402/.597/1.000. OPS+ 184, which exceeds everyone on our teem including Contreras. He is closing in on 2 WAR and May isn’t even over. Compare to our backup shortstop.

    Compare to our backup shortstop.

That’s not the comparison you should make. We got JoJo Romero for Sosa. Romero is a integral cog in the back end of our bullpen. Sosa was an unreliable backup. That is the comparison to be made. But that doesn’t fit your narrative. I’m happy for Sosa, but we all know his stats will regress to his career averages. .258/21/91/.732 If you want to pound on the front office, that’s fine. Pound away. But find a legitimate complaint. That’s not one of them.
