Something has to be done. Turner Ward would be the “lowest hanging fruit”…
May 9, 2024 at 5:23 pm #251424A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. First, get rid of pine tar in a spray can. Seriously.
May 9, 2024 at 8:06 pm #251449When the entire team has been hitting so poorly, it sticks in my mind that the problem has to land closer to the coaching. Something is wrong with the entire system, not just the hitters.
May 9, 2024 at 9:15 pm #251501They are an embarrassment to the birds on the bat as well as the fans.
May 9, 2024 at 9:18 pm #251503What you are seeing is what this team is. Bad.
There’s no coming back from this by just tweaking a thing or two> This team isn’t ‘a couple of players away’.
Nothing can even begin to happen until Mo is replaced,
May 10, 2024 at 9:17 am #251525Obviously, a revamp is needed. The only players in the organization that should not be available in a trade are Winn, Gray and Hence. For starters, Arenado needs to be offered to the Dodgers.

ParticipantInteresting situation. The players aren’t performing for Oli. Do they also have a distaste for Mo? Would it be better to replace Oli with Stubby, or replace Mo with Bloom and let him bring in his own manager?
May 10, 2024 at 9:22 am #251527Clapp should get his long overdue chance to manage the Cardinals. At least on an interim basis. The team seems to need an emotional spark. Stubby might be able to provide that.
May 10, 2024 at 9:48 am #251528I think the changes that need to be made first are off the field at a higher level.
Until that happens I don’t see any meaningful, long term improvement happening.
We don’t have a flat tire; we need a new engine and transmission.
May 10, 2024 at 10:20 am #251530In 1966, All-Star pitcher Milt Pappas went 12-11 in his first season with the Cincinnati Reds and, in 82 plate appearances hit
.107/.139/.173
I bring this up because in 2024, the St. Louis Cardinals with the bases loaded are now batting

May 10, 2024 at 2:04 pm #251541Well as I said, if this series is a disaster then this club has to do something. Ward certainly is the easiest one to let go as a start. With Ollie getting the extension he will likely survive for now, but who knows for how long.
If the season ends up going south, I think the club will let Mo save face and he will “resign” in October.
May 10, 2024 at 3:14 pm #251547This and every topic is and should be centered around the Cardinal’s future Red Jacket member Alec Burleson.
Though nothing he has done suggests super-stardom, all you “gangbangers and malcontents” need to get on board.

ParticipantForsch31 hit it right on the head. Without pujols this ownership and management has done very little. Treaded water for a while but this ship is sinking. A few good years of better picks might help but i dont think we have what it takes to do anything with them far as management and coaching.
May 10, 2024 at 9:30 pm #251686This team and the entire organization is in complete disarray.
It has become painfully apparent that they don’t do a single thing well from the Front Office, to scouting, to player development, to coaching, to managing, and to playing baseball.
They do nothing well and they have gotten nothing right – the organization has been in decline for most of a decade now.
There is no fixing this team – there is only going scorched earth, burning it to the ground, and then hiring all new people at every level to start rebuilding the entire organization from the foundation up,
I’d even fire the secretaries at this point.
May 10, 2024 at 10:21 pm #251694I want to take a look at this forum’s 4 biggest concerns going into this season.
1. Masyn Winn cannot hit at the MLB level and needs to be in the minors while we have our best SS Edman at the position.
2. Jordan Walker needs to be the DH because he can hit but cannot play RF at all and will never be able to play the OF.
3. The starting pitchers are all going to be terrible and likely hurt a lot.
4. Ollie Marmol is a terrible manager.
For the most part, none of those concerns have caused us our issues so far. Maybe Marmol isn’t good, but he isn’t causing our lineup to mostly hit under .200 with no power. We have had a couple injuries now with our starters, but no more than most any other team. No, it’s almost entirely been the offense that has failed. I don’t even recognize the team that is playing on the field every day. Only Burleson, Winn, and Herrera generally take consistent competitive at bats and none of them are actually good hitters – at least not yet. Donovan, Arenado, and Nootbaar sometimes look good, but then just space out for several games at a time. I’ve never seen this much hopelessness. Since we can’t fire the players who probably deserve it, I think the only choice is to fire the leaders whether it’s partially their fault or not. Something has to change. It’s been at least 3 weeks now of literally zero offensive production.

ParticipantIf its just one or two players not hitting, then you can blame those players but when its most of the team, it falls on coaching and the organization that picked them. Tis true that pitching has been good but even there it hasnt all been good. My pitching concerns were more over the length of the season with older guys and that may still unfold. Matz is already out but thats nothing new.
May 11, 2024 at 6:25 am #251702I’m pretty apathetic at this point. No real point in investing emotionally in this organization as it’s structured anymore. If they haven’t been proactive enough to move MO out and reorganize, than MO will still be making all the decisons. Including when he turns it over to someone else. Firing Marmol is just a stunt. At this point they are a sleep aid. I last until about the sixth inning. 430 comes pretty early.

May 11, 2024 at 10:58 am #251722All of you should listen to this Bill DeWitt III interview. Basically he says that its dumb for fans not to go to games because then the team will have less money to spend on salaries, etc. My take is that even when fans showed up and the ratings on TV were huge, they still didn’t spend, and when they have spent they did terribly. Anyways, this interview will surely piss you off.

May 11, 2024 at 12:07 pm #251723Thank for providing the link. I wasn’t offended at all.
For those that don’t have 40 minutes to listen, here are my cliff notes
– They haven’t formalized plans for renovations yet, haven’t assked for money
– Spend $8-10 million per year into the ballpark + a couple of million for operations
– Seats, chillers, concessions
– City abatement of admissions tax was only contribution to new stadium
– Claims the city receives more tax revenue than before they abated the admissions tax
– Understands public financing doesn’t pay off
– Claims that direct tax revenue city receives is bigger than before new stadium – cited player income tax
– Capacity allows them to discount
– Fans spend more when team is performing
– Fans generally spend $15-30 concessions
– Announced attendance is based on tickets sold. Actual attendance factored by no-shows, comps
– Attendance will still be in Top 8
– 70% of tickets sold before opening day
– There was a dropoff in season ticket fans from last year
– Revenue ranking generally translates into payroll ranking
– There is a correlation between payroll and performance – is not direct
– Don’t want to tank for five years
– Bally could affect revenueMay 11, 2024 at 1:10 pm #251728This is what many on here think.
Thanks for sharing this ZTR. This is spot on.
Firing Marmol would be a first step but the problems with this organization are massively greater than him.
May 11, 2024 at 10:09 pm #2519091982 willie
ParticipantRead an article talking about the dewitt interview. He correlates spending with revenue which is odd. Somehow we have been among the top teams in attendance which is revenue but yet we arent near the top in spending. He did sign gray which was good but spent 22 million on lynn and gibson when they coukd have spent that on a younger better arm and still prob got one of those guys. Sure maybe the hitting has been a surprise though there have been signs with goldy n arendo to a point that they were slipping. Yet there was talk they were going to extend goldy. This ownership needs to go and/or get some better decision makers.

ParticipantThe only players in the organization that should not be available in a trade are Winn, Gray and Hence.
If the Cardinals ever get serious about rebuilding, Gray is absolutely someone they should try to move. He would be an attractive and impactful in-season addition for a team like the Braves that has some SP injuries and is trying to win a WS right now. His contract is short and fair value, and the marginal wins he provides are worth a lot more to a contending team than to a team like the Cardinals. Only negatives are the contract is back-ended loaded ($30mm AAV for the last two years) and he would have to waive the full NTC (which I assume he would for a good situation).
May 11, 2024 at 10:22 pm #251911Yeah I think BDW doesn’t get it. Fans and more importantly sports media are finally coming to understand that spending more on the ML roster is not going to solve the problem. The reason is that the whole system is rotton right down to the bottom, and all facets of the organization are failing. If Mo buys more talent he will just be selling it off again when it doesn’t work, like so many pathetic buy a team wanabees do year after year. It is the failed system that has to go and he is just not there yet. Getting him there is what the boycott talk is about.
May 11, 2024 at 10:33 pm #251912The only players in the organization that should not be available in a trade are Winn, Gray and Hence.
If everyone else is to be on the table it means you are talking about a total rebuild. In that case there is no point retaining a 34 year old starter. I am not sure how great a deal his contract is as it goes through his age 36 season. That requires some wishful thinking and keeping fingers crossed.
Hence is coming back to earth now that he is in the upper levels. He is developing in the same system that has developed the current failed crop, so the most likely thing that will happen with him is he stalls out in AAA, exactly like other guys who have looked good in the A-AA part of their development. People say, but Hence is different. So what, they were all different. The sure way to get something out of him is to trade him now before he stumbles any more or gets hurt.
Winn is probably going to look good for a year and then fade. If you have to ask how I know you must follow some other team. Get something for him now.
