Good point Brian. Add scouting to the list. Maybe focus on more polished college players instead of trying to hit it big with risky high school players that other teams are avoiding for a reason.

Flores runs a very analytics heavy operation. The cigar chompers who evaluated by watching a player play are long gone. Now its gun groupies and clipboard cadets and gathering data and crunching numbers. It doesn’t work obviously, but Flores is one of Mo’s boy wonders. It doesn’t matter how epic of a flop his latest 1st rounder is, we will suffer through Mo’s Herculean efforts to make something of him for years to come. We know the drill by now even though some still want to believe.

The Cardinals franchise was in a bad spot when DeWitt bought it. He did a great job of putting together a successful operation for one of the greatest eras of Cardinals baseball. But franchise leadership let the system/product go stale. And now it’s rotting. Sad.

May have reached a point where the required fix for the Cardinals is the same one as the previous time the team experienced an extended run of futility. I don’t think Willie Jr. will offer up the team for sale, but once he says goodbye I’d guess his boy will quickly cash out.
Here is the front office’s thinking. Last year after 34 games we were 10-24. This year 15-19. So the team has improved by 5 games already and it is only May 5th. BDW2 thinking, “yeah, good job Mo”.

Something else I have been harping on for a very long time. I assume the pushback will be far less now than in the past.
It has been a long downhill coast, but we reached the bottom last year. Mo probably did think he was moving under his own power and probably still thinks it. What is more, BDW thinks it.
And why do we stink at throwing out base Steelers? Only 3 all year is also near the bottom. 2 or 3 teams in MLB have fewer. That is said to be on the pitcher as much as the catcher, but whatever. Why do we stink at it?
Correction, Herrera stinks at it. He has allowed 15 SBs in 129.0 innings behind the plate with 0 CS. Contreras has allowed 6 SBs in 154.0 innings behind the plate with 3 CS.
Teams do not run on the Cardinals with Contreras behind the plate.

Forsch31, I am sure I do because I did, but the Correa to Flores transition is a while ago now. But I researched pretty seriously at the time and looking into his video data integration company was very interesting. I will dig out my research notes in the next couple days and respond. In a nutshell, Flores is the Yoda of talent evaluation without boots on the ground.
Here is fact. The Cardinals amateur scouting department (domestic) has two dozen area scouts and cross checkers under Flores. They live and are assigned all over the US (and even one in Canada). For any outsider to assert that he understands in detail the level of the use of video and analytics over traditional scouting in the team’s internal scouting decision making processes is (fill in the adjective of your choice).
From a 2023 Flores interview:
“When we draft players, we all have a voice in that selection. This is across all roles, whether that’s the performance department, area scouting, regional cross-checker or national cross-checker, hitting director, director of pitching. We all have a voice, but not one voice is the voice.”
I cannot wait to see this “evidence” of how Cardinals scouting is run. Guessing that thumb is going to be weighing heavily on the scale again…
That’s all very nice Brian, but back at the time a lot of time and effort went into figuring out why Mo would hire a director of scouting without any discernible relevant experience. The answer was and is Mo didn’t care about experience in traditional scouting methods, and Randy brought something else which lit Mo up.
Bring it on… let’s see your research. I am far less interested in prior background than I am about how the organization works today. But keep in mind that just because one wants to increase focus in one area, it doesn’t mean the prior methods, people and expertise are “long gone,” in your words. You seem to believe in an all or nothing approach that is not realistic.
Brian, as you have said, we outsiders are outside. We can look at what we can see and draw conclusions from that. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on why Mo hired Flores for the job. He had zero background in traditional talent evaluation. He was known as the tech wiz who barged onto the scene by getting his novel video data integration product into The Cape Cod League where all the ML orgs got hooked.
That apparently is a great resume for director of scouting in Mo’s org.

The fact is that you cannot see how decisions are being made today and your supposition does not appear to be backed by anything but background data from almost nine years ago. Flores was hired in August 2015.
