We don’t have a starter and reliever ready in AAA to step in if Gibson and Kitty are traded. Somebody will have to do it.

There are plenty of people to fill those innings. If we trade Gibson and Kitty, then we don’t see ourselves making the playoffs. There wouldn’t be any harm in handing the innings over to the younger players and letting the run with it and test what they have. Graceffo, McGreevy, Liberatore, Thompson, Kloff are all options to take those innings.

Stepping back from what we’d LIKE to see… to considering what is most likely to really occur…

Have there been any indications from either anyone in the know (team officials) or close to the team (major local media) who have even hinted that the Cardinals will pivot from being buyers to sellers in the next two days?

I am not saying it can’t happen, but I haven’t seen a word. Maybe I missed something.

Selling (key players like Gibson and Helsley) would mean giving up on another season. Giving up means even fewer people will come to games and watch on TV the rest of the way.

When all is said and done, these are businessmen who run a team, not baseball fans who are in it to win at all costs.

As mediocre as the team is, they are still in the wild card hunt. That may be good enough for them.

To your point Brian, no the Cardinals have not announced that they are going to be sellers.

In a typical year, 70% of their ticket sales are prior to the season, and I doubt they are getting 30% of their sales as walk-ups this year.

One of the reasons the Cardinals have been “stuck in the middle” the last decade or so is they prioritize short-term “success” (making the wild card) over building a contender.

What’s the difference between marginal upgrades at the deadline and a marginal selloff? Where you are in the standings and what kind of streak you have at the deadline. Both of those are saying the Cardinals should do a soft sell.

Perhaps the definition of a “soft sell” means they only trade Kittredge and plan on Gibson being in the rotation next year.

It would be total nonsense for the Cardinals to be sellers.

My favorite trade under Bills ownership is for Adam Wainwright.
My favorite reclamation project was Chris Carpenter.

Both acquisitions were very cost effective for Bill. Both had long term positive impact.

The Monty / Quintana acquisitions were outstanding, for pretending to be contenders. We are pretending again this season.

As buyers, paying deadline prices for short term impact is stupid. We can buy rentals this winter, again, and keep the “contenders” PR storyline alive.

Target another another Drew / Marrero for Wainwright. Admit we need long term controllable pitching and this time ante up with more than rentals. Get in with both feet.

A half-hearted attempt at the rebuild just prolongs it.

Its just going to be some roster cleanup and see what we can sweep up. Some are thinking Montgomery and Qintana. I’m thinking John Lester and JA Happ. Maybe it will be somewhere in between.

When did team officials announce that they are buyers?

Back when they were 7 games under .500.

I know that we are fading but I still do not believe the Cardinals will be sellers, mainly for the reasons that Brian cited. The Cardinals were sellers last year and prior to that you would probably have to go back at least 15 or 16 years. What are the odds they do it two years in a row? I would say very low. I don’t think BDW wants to see a lot of empty seats in Aug-Sep two years in a row. He likes the revenue.

It is possible they try to thread the needle and do both by moving Carlson, Herrera, and other players low on the 40 man totem pole but I would be very surprised if there aren’t some “quality” additions, however you want to define quality. It won’t be a blockbuster but a player or two to edge us back into a wild card spot. If nothing else they do not want to signal they are punting again and watch the bottom fall out like last year.

Do you really believe fans won’t come to the stadium if they trade Kittredge?

When Giovanny Gallegos was DFA’ed — a move the #STLCards decided Sat night — it was done in hopes of saving salary they can put toward a player nabbed via a trade, per a source.

Gallegos was making $5.5 M in 2024. If he is claimed, STL plans to put that money toward a trade add.

If a prorated $5.5mm (basically $2mm) makes that much of a difference, this organization needs to take a long look in the mirror and question their basic strategy.

There is no ‘if’. It was just proven. And they do not need to look in the mirror, they know what is there.

I would leave some latitude for the possibility that Denton’s source is simply wrong. Clearly they tried to trade Gallegos first, but there was no market. So the next step is DFA. All of that checks out. It’s the monetary motivation part of the story that seems hard to believe.

If Mo acquires a young controllable starting pitcher, you can call him whatever. Seller, buyer, MO-Ron 😉, but Mo will have to SELL, to BUY.

Yah, 65% of GG’s salary is already paid.
2mil remains but hang that 5.5mil salary out there in a tweet and call it “that money” we are trying to “save”. I call it a BS lie.

$2M here, $2M there, pretty soon you are talking real money. 😉

The Rays just traded their closer to the Padres for a great return. Dylan Lesko who is a 50 FV top 100 guy that has mid rotation upside. Plus 2 35+ FV guys who are fliers.

We know that (2mil). The tweet needs a mutual dump trade, at opening day salaries, to avoid the inevitable “5.5mil applied to this loser” type trade, or, eat it in full (minus a pro-rated minimum). Yah, they are lined up for GG, got it.

This is becoming standard operating procedure for all teams. Even the Dodgers DFAed Paxton to save a little money and ended up trading him while he was on waivers.

No not if it is done in isolation but if the Cardinals want to secure a playoff spot THIS YEAR, and I think they do, then moving Kittredge would probably not help matters.

It’s entirely possible the Cardinals will still be able to trade Gallegos now that he is formally DFA’d. In the meantime they free up a 40-man slot. All of that makes sense. It’s the idea that the reason for doing this was to “find” $2mm to put toward a trade deadline acquisition that strikes me as silly. They wanted to get rid of him to free up space (and small money) on the roster, they couldn’t find any takers, so they took the next step. Makes sense. But their pursuit of a trade deadline addition shouldn’t be affected by this one way or another (assuming they’re actually serious about trying to compete this year).

I don’t see why a team would trade for Gallegos since they could just wait until he is DFA’d and sign him for the pro-rated league minimum, unless that other team is thinking that there will be a huge competition for GG’s services, which seems unlikely.

This piece mentions the Cardinals interested in Brebbia and the Dodgers interested in Edman.

The only bit of meat in that MLBTR article is that somebody named Fabian Ardeya with The Atlantic says the Dodgers have interest in Edman. All the rest is nothing but what some writer or other thinks would make sense. I do not subscribe to The Atlantic, but if anyone else does, it would be interesting to see if this Ardeya has a source, or if its just him saying what he thinks would be somebody the Dodgers would be looking at.
